What does ‪@BeachCamsMan‬ do when Storm Babet arrives? Grabs the cameras and gets in on the action.
It's been quite a while since we've had some strong easterly winds hit Dawlish, and this week and this week, Storm Babet tested the new Dawlish Sea Wall.

The power of the sea, thank you for getting soaked for us Neil, it's exhilarating even watching ! My lovely friend Lizzy who died of breast cancer far too young 9 years ago walked knee deep with me in that amazing sea froth on the promenade in Porthcawl during high seas then we had a bag of chips each & wine in the warmth of her flat to celebrate being alive together a few months before I lost her forever. Happy memories of her & the sea at its wildest brought back by your video.

The local council used to keep the groynes ( wooden barriers on the beach) that controlled longshore drift in good repair. Lack of funding caused them to stop. The beach that used to break the waves before they reached the railway was washed off towards Exemouth. The railway was undermined and partially washed away in 2014. Very expensive repairs to railway followed. Would have been a lot cheaper to keep the groynes in good repair!

I don't normally reply to odd blogs,I'm in Cornwall UK and yesterday we had huge seas , we drove to a safe viewing place and landed up calling the coast guard to a boat in trouble long story short they were fine but please don't get this close we see many sea related deaths in Cornwall, the sea is dangerous and takes no prisoners .

In my first year in the Royal Navy in the early 60s, I was training at Torpoint, Cornwall. I regularly took the train from Paddington to Plymouth (a steam train then). From time to time we went through storms just like that - that's when you discover you have left the window open...(back in the days when you could open windows). Trains these days are much lighter, so breaking seas could have a bigger effect. That piece of line is regularly inspected to ensure it is not being undermined by the waves - once a breach starts it could become catastrophic quickly, but I am led to believe a project is being planned to stabilise the bank and add remote monitoring. The line is a key piece of national infrastructure, and rerouting it inland would be a massively expensive undertaking

Always interested in Dawlish and the new sea wall. Love to see the power of water, but you MUST respect it, the most powerful element on earth especially with the wind behind it. I'd wash yourself off with freshwater as well if I were you. Salt water is no good for waterproof clothing, even Goretex. Thanks for braving it though.

These days so much fuss is made about any storm. Back in the 1970s (1976?) there was a storm that was so ferocious it smashed the seaward side of Dawlish station to smithereens - my (long dead now) Grandparents used to have a house that directly overlooked the railway at Dawlish, my Grandmother sent me a newspaper clip headlined 'the 8:30 (or similar!) is delayed', which accompanied a photograph of the engine and first couple of carriages of an up train stationary at the exit of the tunnel just prior to Dawlish station - she told me it was still there at 1:30 pm.

Meanwhile, I was at Exeter railway stations while this was going on and all trains along this route were being cancelled. Late afternoon, they announced the first train to brave the route after 7 hours, all stations to Penzance. The train was rammed full - people standing in the aisles - packed.

Whilst the structure of the new wall is doubtless amazing I personally think that the weak point in the structure are the gaps where whatever the contractors used to seal them has not the potential to last as can be seen, evenbefore Babet, where in many instances the 'seal' is missing, broken or not adhered properly and we all know (I imagine) what mother nature can do when it finds a weak spot - and there asre plenty of them - look for yourself if local.
