It's 5am in the African bush and the birds are starting to call - the dawn chorus begins.
On the border between Botswana and Zimbabwe there are many pockets of wilderness far away from sources of man-made noise. Getting here is fairly difficult since it is not a very poplar area for tourists and the infrastructure is very poor. As you get further away from the border area there are some villages but they are poorly connected and people here live a largely subsistence life.
This offers excellent opportunities for wildlife to thrive. The farming that is done here is mostly low tech, with cattle-drawn implements and a very circular agriculture. Sustainability is not on anyone's mind, even though it's clearly what the people here are achieving. That is mostly because there is no other way. They have no access to chemical fertilisers and insecticides, for better or worse. Using age-old farming techniques, they've managed to protect the soil from erosion and to keep the land from becoming infertile.
You can hear how biodiverse this landscape is at dawn in the rainy season. Even if the rains have been late in recent years, the number of species and individuals calling is staggering. You are surrounded by these incredibly complex webs of life. Ecosystems that have taken millions of years to evolve are in full display. Recording the sounds of the dawn chorus here was an absolute treat for me. Close your eyes and immerse yourself into this calm and lush ambience.
