It would be excellent if your long form videos were chaptered, so it would be easier for us to come back and find topics covered.

Excellent lesson Ryan, thanks for pointing out the most important factors when choosing our path on a tree. Just at the very end of the video, I came back to the start to compare the result, amazing. Greetings from Brasil.

The first living Metasequoia trees were discovered in 1944 by Chinese botanist Wang Zhan in Sichuan province, China. I think a better approach for this species is to grow them from a young tree, keeping the roots and branches in control. This is a tree that grows absolutely vertical and the branches are all straight coming off the trunk at about a 45 degree angle. I think the current styling is totally alien to the species, more of a typical "bonsai" than a Dawn Redwood. In this case, I think larger is not always better. The more you stray from the natural form of the species, the more it becomes personal art, and art can be very subjective! A very good video on the horticultural techniques!!

The "natural" method is lazy, Yes we want to see bonsai, the art form, thats entirely the point.

@@CornellD.Cavendish To get a tree to look natural in miniature is extremely hard. It's actually easier to create a bonsai looking tree. This bonsai style does little for me, but we all have different tastes in this hobby.

Thankyou. That was was very enlightening. When you were discussing the genetics of the tree it felt like I was watching the History Channel. Your video has helped me to understand my Redwood. In future I will wear my 'plus one spectacles' to help me identify those little buds . Cheers to you old chap. A great video.

This is helping a lot in managing my redwood dawn trees! I did design them in formal upright style, but was struggling with the ramification. This video will pay off in 3 years, when the pads will have developed in stead of me cutting them off too soon :)

These videos are great for when I'm working, there's no danger of missing an important point as the same point will still be under discussion ten minutes later! 😂 In all seriousness, I've learned some useful info here though

I planted a Dawn Redwood 20 years ago thinking it would be pyramidal shaped. Over the years it turned out to be a lollipop shape. Don't know if it's because of the soil conditions or location.

I had a mental breakdown last summer and cut the top of my dawn redwood. Down to the stump of 8 inches. Looks like it's gonna have a cedrus candelabra growth.

Whilst I do agree, they certainly seem to have a lot of people learning from them, so it must be useful to some people in a way that a more concise explanation is not. Each to their own, I know what to expect when I see Ryan Neil in a video, there are plenty of other experts I can watch when I want a shorter expiation.

Do you HAVE to be so verbose? That may be impressive to the unintelligent, but it is really off-putting to those with more than a single digit IQ..
