54:00 Can confirm! I was making one track per week for about a year and half, I have learnt more doing this than most courses, bootcamps. Releasing music is not just about theory, skills but also about working on self worth, confidence and letting go of emotions attached to a project or track. #OneTrackMindProject

I have been producing / mixing House Music / EDM ;-) since 1994 in Philly so just under 30 years and I';ve been using Ableton since version 1 before that it was Cubasis Pro / Logic 5.5 and then Cubase SX and before that it was DAT Tape trimming and splicing and the original form of Music Production using all the 80's and 90's gear TB 303s 808s 909s MPC's etc,.... You my friend are awesome I love watching your channel because your a great orator and even if I already know 99% of what you talk about that new 1% is worth the watch, You are talented in many areas, Production, Mixing and teaching and that's not a compliment I give out much since Ive been in this since it was a fringe underground movement and now everyone with a laptop is a music producer. I just subscribed after watching your vids for a week! Keep it up man! I grew up in the states and other countries but my mum is from Newcastle! Bet you could pronounce my name ;-)

It's probably from working with bands first and then moving to edm so I got to hear real dynamics. Even these days I go to live orchestral concerts, which is a rare aural experience as most live music is usually amplified so getting to hear truly dynamic completely acoustic music really gives you an ear for dynamics. Most sounds in edm just don't have dynamics to compress

Earned a new sub right here brother! Love what you're doing! I've been producing since I started making hip hop beats on Cubase and a cracked Fruity with Reason from my hip hop starts. I don't care if I ever go "viral" or any of that shit. I produce for my own piece of mind and to heal my artists soul. Started as a guitar player at 12 years old in the early 90s by recording my rhythm guitar on a cd/tape boom box and then I would play lead melodies amd try to sing a little bit as well. I finally got into "EDM" if you will but I don't care to label myself so specifically because it's all music to me. If you don't produce for yourself then I don't know why you would have the passion to keep at it. Thank you for sharing your passion man it's def infective 😊😊😊😊😊. Much love and happy new year 2024

Fast tracker 2 wow that's going back! I missed that era, my family couldn't afford a computer until early 2000s. My friends had Amigas and I saw trackers on them. I was jealous but they were also jealous of my megadrive haha. My first PC daw was eventually cool edit pro, and then cubase and logic.

Man I just wish I still had all my tracks back from the days... So many broken harddrives... x(

Hello! Just a quick note to say thanks and I hope you keep going for a long time. I have just found a way to listen your livestreams as a podcast (Listenbox) so now I can work in the garden and catch up! I found the 28 May one particularly good, especially the consistent advice to make every choice on context. I teach art to secondary kids and they are always asking me what colour goes with purple etc, a question that is always met with - well, what are you trying to achieve? I feel I need to apply more of the lessons I’ve learned via my specialist subject to my music making, look for equivalents. My eye is developed, my ear not so much! I’m currently on Easter hols from school and was really chuffed about having time to spend making, learning and finishing off a track I am currently excited about. Unfortunately what has happened was, at the last hurdle I went down a mixing and mastering RU-vid death spiral rabbit hole. Hours spent second guessing my hearing, getting more confused about compression and limiters and generally losing the fun in creating. Then I remembered that video you made on mixing tuts being blxs. Thanks to that I am a changed man. No more endless YT ‘learning’ sessions and lots more getting back to just the fun of making without rules. I was hoping to join the stream this Sunday, but will be otherwise engaged sunning myself on the North Wales coast. I’ll listen again whilst sorting the veg patch next week. Keep up the amazing work, Dan

Great video, so many awesome tips and confirmed what I'd suspected about compression in electric music for a while now. Had a quick question if that's ok? I see you're going into the red on your master - do you bounce the track like this ,trading off a bit of digital clipping for loudness or do you bring the volume down before exporting?

I can understand why not using compression on sample pack samples, synth pads / bass. Are they synth preset sounds which need any compression , for example a guitar / piano type sound. If compression to be avoided on these be interested to know why ? Many thanks , your videos provide excellent insight.
@Bthelick
@Bthelick 6 месяцев назад
It all depends on the sound and how it's 'presented' or how it's processed or pre processed. There are guitar and piano sounds that can benefit from compression yes, but it's not a given. A raw recording of any acoustic instrument is more likely to need its dynamics reducing in the context of a modern mix. But an acoustic sound from a sampler , rompler, or sample library is much less likely to need anything as it will have been chopped up, edited and 'normalized' .(samples adjusted to a constant level so it sounds predictable on play back). Likewise, there are also electronic synths and samples that can benefit from compression. But there is no general rule that can be followed unfortunately (or should that be fortunately?), training to hear dynamics in sound is the only way to tell, and more importantly gaining the experience to hear ahead of time what will work in the context of other sounds. I recommend trying to find a recording with a 'spikey' waveform , I've that sounds 'jumpy' and just play around with extreme settings on both a compressor and a transient processor so you can get an ear for it.
@thetree2044

@@Bthelick thank you for your answer , I guess if you can hear it's uncomfortably snappy, 'loud' or cutting though other elements too much may be consider compressing.

@Bthelick

@jvaddison
@jvaddison Год назад
@@Bthelick NOT PARTICULARLY, BUT, USING MASTER FADER AND PRE-GAIN TO ACHEIVE THE -6 SHORT TERM LUFS CREATES MASSIVE DISTORTION. IF I USE THE LIMITER ONLY AND SELECT A DANCE MASTER PRESET ITS FINE.🤨
@Bthelick
@Bthelick Год назад
well if you have your track to same level as your reference and it's obviously distorting then that's telling you there's mix problems. Squashing it with a preset that you don't have control over is stopping the distortion but it's not removing the mix problem, I guarantee you whatever that processor is, it will be compromising the sound (and certainly the groove) trying to deal with distortion you're already feeding it. Figure out why it distorts first and you'll get the best results. Pay attention to what's triggering the distortion and see if you can make space for it. It's not just a mix thing too, consider your arrangement. It starts with the lows. Make sure your kick and sub are out of each others way
@jvaddison
@jvaddison Год назад
@@Bthelick so frustrating this game lol. Thanks for reply.
@Bthelick
@Bthelick Год назад
Easiest way is drop your overall level. -6 is waaaay too hot anyway. Spotify caps at -11 so why bother. It's all a compromise up there in terms of physics don't be impressed by it.
@donnydarko7624
@donnydarko7624 7 месяцев назад
you can avoid losing the dynamics through parallel compression.
@Bthelick
@Bthelick 7 месяцев назад
Well, It doesn't "avoid" it, it just lessens the problem. It's certainly less damaging but if I'm telling beginners to avoid it until they have the ear appreciation for good dynamics then they're still going to need that ear education to judge parallel too. I can't say "if you just compress, then use parallel" because if they don't know why they need compression in the first place it doesn't solve the core problem.
@mrmick2878
@mrmick2878 Год назад
Is there any specific reason why you are using compressor here and not STFU for sidechain? I noticed that when you hit the kick, the bass doesn't turn down completely like it does with the LFO, and it still sounds great.
@Bthelick
@Bthelick Год назад
You answered your own question there, it sounds great! Sound always comes first. It's a groove thing. The (upper) bass doesn't need to dip all the way unless you desperately need it for master headroom purposes but I usually only do that with the sub , see my bass processing video (another advantage of mixing at zero and not needing to master). Sometimes I need it to respond to the kick properly and not be on that 'auto-pump' thing. Especially when the kick changes tone or stops, I sometimes prefer the other elements to 'breathe' so when the kick comes back in the drop is more impactful. (It's also quicker than trying to get the shape right in a fake side chain / volume envelope)
@mrmick2878
@mrmick2878 Год назад
@@Bthelick Thank you very much for your answer. You help me a lot. I have 2 last questions. In the video I noticed that subb track reaches a max -13 gain reduction. What most don't understand about music is you can't just make music! (Well you can if it's just your hobby) , there's still has to be a reason for people to come to you, like story, consistency, imagery etc. A successful artists output very rarely consists of more than 30% actual music unless they are lucky enough to have help.

@@Bthelickyeah, that was my thinking too. I didn’t understand why YT’s “compression” algorithm for uploading still made it feel very raw and punchy, whereas the groove on AM felt kinda flat in comparison. Maybe it’s like what you were talking about in which platforms will lower the overall mix for headroom. Maybe bc YT doesn’t, the relative dynamics across the track hit harder? The psychoacoustic dynamic difference from -10db to 0db is greater than -20db to -10db, yes or no? I am far less experienced than you, but I trust my ears before my brain, and my ears hear a difference my brain can’t comprehend why.. While I try not to let it get in the way of making music, I love chasing the rabbit hole that is what my ears “hear”..
