The best part was when Richard's son, Mark, asked for the door to be slid open, and Richard sees his other son, Gary, who came from England. What a wonderful reunion.
Read that when he divorced his first wife he actually sought and got custody of his sons. Whatever happened things obviously turned out very well for all of them. A great dad. We still miss you.

A very sweet moment. I saw this on GSN during a Family Feud Marathon on a Sunday and I had a warm feeling in ym heart watching Richard hugging his son Gary. It's a very sweet moment.
For all the haters who complained about all the kissing on FF, see how he is with his family. That is pure love. Also, watch the speech his gives in the final episode. If love and affection are that offensive to you, I feel sorry for you.
He had a huge ego, but he made up for it because he was so charismatic and incredibly witty and talented. off the show, he was obviously a great man with morals as anyone could tell by watching this video

Richard loved his boys, esp. Gary. His 1st appearance, aged 18, was when he and his older brother - Mark - wanted to wish their father a "Happy Birthday!" Gary would later work for his father in the final season of the original "Family Feud," as a production assistant a decade before Gary got promoted to executive producer.
I wonder if the co-stars from Hogan's Hero's ever surprised him on air while he was doing the show. I remember watching the show but I can't remember if they ever did
It's not very likely that they did. John Banner died in 73, long before this show began, and Bob Crane was murdered in 78. The only costar I know for sure he saw again was Larry Hovis because they were on the last two or three years of Rowan and Martin's Laugh-In together, and Larry appeared on Match Game for a week or two in 74 while Richard was still a regular.
This was an awesome episode, not only did Richard get that wonderful surprise, since the beginning took so long he convinced the producer to have BOTH families go to the fast money round. They only played a couple of face-off questions to determined which family went first. Then, they brought them both back for the next show to play by the regular rules. Was Gary going to school over in England? Or were the brothers split up in the divorce? That seems a really rotten to do to siblings if that was the case.
I know for a fact that Richard got both sons in the divorce. Diana wasn't in their lives very much, if at all. But Richard always kept her picture in his house, and sent her flowers on her birthday every year.
Nope, they're 100% brothers. Their parents were Richard and his first wife Diana Dors. Shannon, the daughter Richard had with his second wife Gretchen, is their half-sister.

She was from upstate New York, but lived in England with Paul for almost 30 years, so her accent took on a British tone, but she was 100% American.
I never really like Richard Dawson back in the day when Family Fued was first airing. My first thought of him was that he was some kind of weirdo and also somewhat of an asswipe. But in recent years I've watched alot more of him on RU-vid clips and have come to like him alot more. I think I just didn't get his type of humor and didn't quite understand him. Plus I was just a young kid in elementary school when he was first on the Feud.
I’ve been matching Match Game 78 lately and I had to come back to this to remind myself that he wasn’t always a complete jerk. By that time he was doing this show, wanted out of MG and they wouldn’t let him and he was miserable to EVERYONE: fellow panelists, the audience, Gene Rayburn, even the contestants sometimes. Just rude and miserable. But here he looks almost human.
