Now I loved the MW’s, they were regulars on the 265’s with Eastern National at Brentwood, would see them from the fields at Ingrave while the buses were on their merry way via Herongate to West Horndon.

Seriously fab resto ,like she just driven out of ECW,s workshop, and at last the right wheels and tyres, Red &White Spaceship Drivers had it easy , one extra cylinder with eighteen more Patricroft Ponies on tap. Regarding Spaceship gearboxes, they are not constant mesh , but synchromesh yes cats and kittens ,ask Alan Townsin Author of the 'Bristol Story Part One'. Spaceship gearboxes are four speed with overdrive fifth on a dog leg. Synchro fitted on second ,third and direct fourth, first is crash or constant mesh ,like anAustin A40. Driving a Bristol Omnibus Spaceship on service on and around Stroud,s rough, steep ,and tortuous roads is an experience never to be repeated.Stroud Depot had a fair stud of Spaceships exactly the same as yours, but with one difference ,yes cats &kittens poor old Stroud Depot had 5LW Spaceships with,a five pot Gardner and ninety four wheezy shagged out Patricroft Ponies, most fit for the knackers yard . To be a top notch 5LW Spaceship Driver in Stroud, you had to master the hill start with least drama. Coaxing a 5LW Spaceship up a steep hill loaded with grumbling shoppers or bolshy noisy school kids is an art worthy of Monet or Matisse. Box in first gear holding the Spaceship on the hand brake, gently feed in the clutch and when it bites , hand brake off and floor the throttle, soon see if you got it right by the size of the blue cloud of exhaust smoke gassing some poor sod overtaking one,s Spaceship in an Austin 1300,the said smoke cloud known in Gardner Circles as a 'Patricroft Fog'. One glimmer of hope, and yes there is a God for Stroud Depot had 6LW Spaceships five of them, three Dual Purpose, and two ex Greyhound. If rostered on a 426 Stroud to France Lynch run or 429 to Michinhampton, you prayed like f--k that the depot gaffer will give you a 6LW Spaceship.

There were a lot of these in Stroud in the 60s and 70s and the early ones with the straight back with the lights above the windows inside and the diamond-shaped lights down the canter of the ceiling the one in the video is the more new one,s with the lights which were staggered down the ceiling the same as the REs lights there were a lot of variants of mws in Stroud at the time some had 5 cylinders and some had 6 cylinders some of them had a straighter front we had these long with the REs in the 60s and 70s

@@robertp.wainman4094 no it was not semi automatic, it had a clutch. It also had coach seats originally, but was converted to a service bus, all seats were changed.

@@seansands424 I know , Stroud Depot was Spaceship City , 5HLW Spaceships were the long suffering maid of all work. A plume of light blue smoke belching from the arse end of a crawling Spaceship, told even the most myopic that poor Gardner 5HLW is being flogged to death up a very steep hill.

I'm unable to count the number of times I've been on this bus mainly when it was on the service 10 Cinderford to Blakeney

What a beautiful bus. I can't believe it's over 50 years old and still running. Most buses these days last for a maximum of about 30 years at a push. But this is magnificent. It does sound like it's struggling to accelerate especially when it gets to about 30MPH but i suppose that would be perfectly normal for a large vehicle that is over 50 years old. Ther was no ABS brakes or power steering on these back in 1950s/1960s.

Much as I am not comfortable asking the depot why they stopped running the London Suburban Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW’s on routes N26, 30, 121, 230, 271, 349, N279 And 158 why can’t we make the same make of the Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Buses but Modernise the insides of these Buses. Also, make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more so there will be more space for the wheelchair users. By the way, if you could remake and Modernise these vehicles could they also make them into a Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Version’s that if it will be possible and Modernise the insides of these Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW’s make it low floor up and down and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more so there will be more space and even a London Suburban Scania N230UD Enviro 400 MMC and also extend the middle body part of these vehicles a little bit more. By the way, could you also make the routes N26, 349, 121, N279 and 271 into London Suburban Buses and have a mixture of a Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Scania N230UD Enviro 400 MMC and Loud 4-Speed Leyland Hydra cyclic Automatic Gearbox Gardner 6LX and Gardner 6LXC Diesel Engine Olympian ECW Version. Could they also transfer the Arriva Bus Depots from Hackney to Stagecoach company so they can replace all the Arriva buses and all of them can go to Birmingham and Leeds?
