Hi guys had my surgery 4th July no pain killers whatsoever,I just used an ice block especially at night before I go sleep.its important you have help especially getting dressed but most of the time I left me pajamas on rest is important . When you go to surgery the put a block injection in my arm even after 2 days I had no pain. After 3 months I was back in my gym its 6 months now no pain arm fully functional the last thing I did was to pray about the whole thing .I was lucky as I gym was given certain training tips on working the arm and it feels great God is good
You will be fine just take it one day at a time and listen to what they tell you to do that is the key I am 6 months out and about 90 percent back to normal good luck
My surgery is October 4th. Not worried, having had 4 major surgeries in the last 2 years. But the sling is going to be a pain in the butt. Thanks for sharing. I'm 65. Old age isn't for wimps.
Hi age is only in you head the sling is a challenge but you can do it I had my on for six weeks the key is do exactly what they tell you to do my shoulder is about 90 percent back so good luck glad you like the video Tom
I used a sling that was more of a harness. Best thing I ever did! Looking carefully it looks like that’s exactly what he has, although his looks like it may be backwards.
Thank you for the video! My surgery is coming up on Wednesday 10/19. I’m just trying to do things to prepare, like modifying some tank tops to wear, I got a small shower stool, dressing stick, backscratcher, wedge pillows, going to get some ready made meals from the grocery, etc. Good luck to all! May all the procedures go smoothly 🙏🏼
Hi, I am having my right rotator cuff surgery 1-24-23. I am right handed and claustrophobic. The thought of not being able to move is quite frightening. Thank you for this video and I hope you had a speedy recovery. 🙏
Thank you Tom, and to your lovely assistant! I will know fairly soon If surgery is needed. FYI, I love the New England accents. My mom was a MA native. (Concord and Lowell) ✌❤
I just had my surgery 7/27/22. My nerve block lasted two days. They told me to start taking my meds right away to get ahead of the pain. I was told to keep the big bandage on until day 5, then I could shower after taking that off. I WISH I had that ice thing but they didn’t give me one. I have the lovely sling of course. I see the doctor and the physical therapist on 8/12. This is going to be a long process! I hope you are doing well and moving around!
Hi I am glad your surgery went well, keep ice packs on it help a lot. Hint do what they tell you to do it will take time but there is light at the end of the tunnel. I ended 3 1/2 months of pt. Don't think you have to do everything around the house let people help the first couple of weeks. Good luck I am glad the video help I wish I did more.
@@BlessedtobeMimi I had done other damage so after a year I’m still having trouble with muscles. I had a reverse shoulder replacement. Not sure I’d do a second one of those though.
Thanks for sharing Tom, this will really helping me over the next month or so, I am a week away from a total reverse shoulder replacement incorporating tissue grafts, already postponed 5 times… our health service sucks! Good luck with your ongoing rehab. Stay safe. @Grandpa-Chris in London
Good luck with your surgery it has been a year since my surgery and about 85 percent back to normal the biggest thing don't be a hero and don't be be afraid to done things there is a happy medium good luck
I am glad I happened upon your video - I have rotator cuff surgery on my dominant hand next month. I found an OT on RU-vid that also helped with lots of ideas re: shower, dressing, etc. Grateful to hear and see your first-hand experience. Hope you are getting along well.
So you had the nerve block & general anesthesia? I'm being told that in most cases the patient can choose what kind of anesthesia they want & that it's better to get the nerve block in the neck & a local shot of novocain on the back side of the shoulder & forgo the general anesthesia all together.
Hi there. Great video. I'm scheduled to have rotor cuff surgery in June. I'm very worried about the pain. Did you have severe pain and if so, how long did it last? And how are you doing now that its been two years?
Thank you very much for making these videos. They are operating on my right shoulder on May 8, 2023. You said you actually were able to take a shower and take your arm out of the sling within a few days? The nurse was telling me that I couldn't take it out of the sling. And if I wanted to take a shower, I would have to be a garbage bag over the sling. I think my shoulder ice pack actually comes with an ice bucket. I am hoping it comes with a pump. I had watched a few other youtube videos and they suggested getting an angled pillow. I just bought one from Walmart. I am hoping that stops me from having to sleep in the recliner. I did take physical therapy before the decision for surgery, so I know how to do the swinging arm exercise. Sadly, the physical therapy didn't work, and surgery was suggested. I see that you do alot of cruise videos. We cruise alot so I will have to subscribe. We normally are on Carnival but this September we sail out of Galveston on Allure of Seas. Hoping my arm is alot better by then so I can help drive. Thanks again!!! OH, when the nurse was showing me the sling, I saw the ball. I asked her (in a funny tone) is that to keep the dogs away? I guess I will never be a comic.
I am glad it help you I would suggest getting a cheap sling for the shower and check with the surgeon if you can take it off to changing your shirt there are video on how to do that. Good luck
@@markg.4246 My rotator cuff issue wasn't as bad as MRI suggested but my bicep was bad. I didn't get the immobilizer sling as Tom got. Mine is just a sling, which I still on today. Hope I get it off by next week. I still have pain, but I think it coming from the physical therapy. I was just given more pain killers yesterday. But I think I am doing better. It is just taking time. As everyone says, first week is a bear. Couldn't sleep in my bed, even with a wedge. I slept in a recliner with pillows to prop up my arm. Good luck with your MRI. I got stuck doing mine twice because I couldn't sit still.
Excellent video, full of helpful information. I'm having mine done soon and not looking forward to it. I hope they kit me up as well as your hospital has you. Thank you.
It's been a week today since my rotator cuff surgery! 3 out of the 4 areas I had tears. I also had a tendenosis of the bicep. After the block had worn out, the first 48 hours were excruciating, as far as pain. After that, all I needed was my cold pack, no meds!
This video is terrific! I don’t know if I will get as far as surgery, but this really gives me good information. Thank you! I’m sure now you are back to a good life, and I just love your accent! Northeast US maybe?
Hi I am glad you like the video been over two years doing great so if you you need to do surgery you can do it. And you are right new England acent U S where are you from good luck
Thank you for sharing your video with us. I fell in June 2022 and my MRI came in last month September, and my doctor found a torn anterior tendon. So I need rotator cuff surgery. I have not received a date for my pre-op testing or for the surgery but I feel more at ease listening to your experience and that of others. So, Thank you and to your wife for this informative video. Have a blessed and beautiful day! - Yvonne😃
I have a small rotator cuff tear that bothers me when I use my right arm and hand to carry something over fifteen pounds. My doctor says I can either have surgery or live with the pain. I'm calling tomorrow to ask if he can schedule my surgery for September. Get well soon. keep up the good vibes and thanks for encouraging me to take care of it once and for all.
After 2 wks I could not stand to wear the sling. Caused a great deal of pain in my neck. It never did fit right. Just had my 6 wk post op. Will begin PT next week. Never knew pain like this rotator cuff repair! But all is well now. Still having swelling especially from where the needle for the blocker went in. Will never do this again! Glad your experience is much better than mine. My blocker wore off in 24 hrs.🤷🏼♀️
Thanks for sharing ,have surgery month ago, still on sling, two more weeks than I start physio, not easy to use toilet with one hand, very sore uncomfortable .good luck/
I have had two. #1 don’t eat much after surgery or as little as possible, your going to get clogged up bad. #2 have a recliner and I hope you can sleep on your back.#3. Keep your hand on your stomach as long as possible so you don’t ruin your surgery.
Hi I had my surgery May 15/24 one year and three month after I fell on my shoulder. Follow up is on the 12th of June then on to physio. I had a massive superior posterior rotator cuff tear and End stage long head biceps tendinopathy. Surgery went well was very painful after coming out surgery. Had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder 12 yrs ago so had a good idea what I was in for.
Thank you for sharing. I have surgery in 4 days. I fell 1.5 months ago. I’m so sick of having the sling. My biceps cramp at times. Can you take the sling off to straighten your arm at all?
It is not as bad as they say it is if you get the nerve blocker you should be alset but don't be a hero give it time to heal let people help you if you can.
Hi my surgery was a year ago and it was a success about 90 percent of my mobility back lifting, reaching, pulling no problem the key is don't be a hero and do as the dr tell you to do and it will take time to heal good luck Tom
Medicare coverage depends on your plan. It has to ordered by the Dr and you have to not be able to leave the house other than to go to the Dr or therapy. And mine is limited to 35 hours a week. My surgery is scheduled in a month. I have a Medicare Advantage Plan. Thanks for the videos. There are also people who put out videos if anybody needs more advice. The more advice we can get the better informed we are. There is a Dr who calls himself The Rotator Cuff Expert who gives very good advice on what to do and not do.
How old ARE u? I've got arthritis/grinding/bone on bone & I'm 70. Got cortisone shots in back of my shoulder, just got a different doctor gave one in the front, not working. Will try one more time & may need surgery. I live alone, I'd like your input. PS What about bathing?
Thanks a lot Bud I'm having this done on the 23rd of March, repairing a bicep tendon a shaving of the acromion to fix shoulder impingement, etc. I'm scared stiff about the outcome. Thanks for showing us what to expect immediately after surgery. Would love to know how you're doing today. Did it work for you? was it worth it? Take care!!
Thank you for sharing. I have my surgery on 1/23/23. I'm not looking forward to it at all. I appreciate all the information you are giving. Can you take the sling off to shower?
Hi I am from Quebrc, Canadâ, I will be having shoulder surgery Dec.19th. I am a bit aprenhensive because I don't know what to expect in terms of one handed. For instance, how to take a shower without taking the sling off? From what I see in the video, you are allowed to take the song off while bathing and changing tops.
Hey Tom, how is that shoulder doing? Thanks for the video. Im headed to see the surgeon in a few days. Same shoulder as you. What sling is that you are using? Thanks again. Now heal! Lol
Hi my shoulder is doing great thanks for asking 14 weeks out and pt is coming along only 5 weeks to go hope your shoulder is not that bad ,but if you do have surgery follow instructions to the tee and you will be fine and the sling is a ultra sling 3 by Donjoy good luck
Hi Tom I hope all is well I had my surgery on 10/14 or 22 like you went straight in had my surgery done out and about 4 hours I have a sling similar to what you are wearing I iced off and on for 20 minutes for the first 72 hours so there would be no swelling or that it's a surgical site I have a small incision they also did the blocker through my neck I have little pain I do have some in-house therapy to do on my own I also was told 6 weeks in the sling and 6 weeks of therapy I hope everything goes well I do have a little trouble sleeping in a recliner I hope everything goes well for you I go for walks outside I have been a few places I'm not allowed to drive but I have gotten to the store and a few other places I hope all is well thank you for posting I hope to see more good luck
Just wanted to know how your shoulder felt before you had the surgery. Were you in constant pain and that is what prompted the surgery? I have a shoulder injury but it doesn't bother me too much right now. Surgery may be in my future . I hope not but time will tell. Thanks for the video.
Hi I had no injury just wear and tear no real pain but could not lift a gal of milk pass my chest. I had a bad tear waiting 3 yrs to long to get it fix my advice don't wait that long good luck
Hi if pt doesn't work and you can hardly pick anything and lift it pass your chest you might want to consider doing it but that's your call with Dr advice
