It’s not. It was originally called murderball and was an entirely new sport developed for veterans in wheelchairs, no intentional relation to rugby. When they decided to make it a Paralympic sport, the Olympic committee decided it needed a more politically correct name, and since wheelchair rugby wasn’t a thing, they chose that name since both are full contact sports. It’s usually way more exciting than this game… not a good example of the sport.

I agree that it isn't really your typical rugby when you compare it to able bodied rugby. It was called murderball originally, but they needed a new name for it. The game consists of a mixture of rules including ones from handball and basketball, but also ones from rugby too. There are two different types of wheelchair rugby (rugby league and union) this one is paralympic rugby union

I would love to see you play a game of this. It look so easy because they have trained the tactics and the skills for years. I play this and it is significantly harder than it looks. It also takes a great amount of stamina as you are always moving in the game.
