You need a hot bed in the poly tunnel - you've got muck from the cow and straw - you can grow on top of the hot beds and gain a couple of months on the growing seaon. A mini green house over the top if you really want it warm. Great project and a great hat !
@MaxGrowingSolo
@MaxGrowingSolo Год назад
Yup we have a hotbed in the PT. it has a glass lid. Y’ll probs see it soon….thanks for watching. Max

Another good one, you can clearly see the struggle that you are going through hopefully you should be getting dandelions through soon to help eke out your supplies plus the nettles will spring into action soon too (l see nettle soup in your future). Good luck with the coming weeks keeping everything crossed you do not get any storms!

I SO see nettles being a green food soon. I am experimenting with sprouting seeds too but it’s not as easy as it looks….thanks for watching. Max

Hi Max, I live not far from you in Rimpton. I've perfected a no-knead, slow fermentation sourdough loaf that is ridiculously simple to make. If you're interested I can come over and show you. Can't guarantee it will rise as much as one made with high protein level flour but it will still rise a fair bit and have a decent crumb. It lasts well, also.

I am absolutely determined to get on top of the whole sourdough thing this year. No corn until the autumn but I am really looking forward to it. Thanks for your message. Max

I am rooting for you Max! You can do it, I now feel personally invested in your success. If you have seeds on the farm(like sunflower or pumpkin) you can make a rustic seed cracker with them, your just add spices and water and bake. Their are several recipes online for them. I love the hat, it definitely suits you. I must say, I did feel a bit guilty tucking in to my Bison Curry while watching 😉 Hxx

Ha! Eat whatever you like if yr watching. X sunflowers were a right off but have pumpkin seeds. Must try crackers….

Great filming and a wonderful story. Sorry about your celeriac. I left some outside and lost them to frost but the ones I harvested and kept in a cool place indoors, all survived well. You might try making squash pancakes to eke out your wheat supplies.

I would get some bergamot growing its great for Oswego tea or you can add it to black tea for an earl grey tea. I also grow peppermint and harvest and dry it before winter for hot drinks. I have anise hyssop as well its a good licorice flavor. And catnip/catmint for nighttime. I also have a few other more rare plants that I use medicinally for teas as well. I have quite a few tea plants growing in my garden.
@MaxGrowingSolo
@MaxGrowingSolo Год назад
Gosh. will look those up. I have hyssop and peppermint. obvs not growing at the mo. I have also been experimenting with hop tea. it’s crazily bitter but something about it feels like it’s doing me some good. like yoga or reading a 19th century novel. Thanks again. Max

Great episode. I wonder if you considered parsnip as a hungry gap carbohydrate? We've always got a parsnip bed - roasted in the range they make a very acceptable potato replacement & are much less vulnerable to blight etc Dead easy to seed save too. Our butternut squash have succumbed to mould now but our Crown Prince squash are fine. It's interesting in this life, keeping qualities really matter. Our apples are now dwindling. Fiesta are delicious but softening but Adams Pearmain and Cornish Aromatic are still great

thanks so much for your comments. You know, I’ve always failed a bit with parsnips. I remember trying to grow them in my 20s on a very claytastic London allotment and because the books said they could go in in February I recall pushing my index finger into something a potter would have loved and trying to drop a feathery parsnip seed into the waterlogged hole with my muddy fingers. Yr right. I need to revisit parsnips. my friend Steve (next episode) has made some stunning parsnip wine which - of course - I ha ent been able to sample yet. Bon Chance. Max

Rutabega/Swede soup would be great for you! You could sub the celery for some other green with good flavor. Or skip it entirely. Do you have any carrots though? You really only need 1 or 2. And I make a huge pot of this and it lasts me a week. And its so good!
@Diniecita
@Diniecita Год назад
Recipe is 1 rutabega/swede chopped 1 onion chopped 1-2 carrots chopped depending on size Usually 1-2 ribs of celery chopped. (Could use something else here.) Cook with oil or butter to avoid sticking for 30 mins covered on a pot. Then add some type of stock (water if you don’t have it) and milk or all milk (2 cups) Then blend with immersion blender or add to a regular blender after cooling a bit. Heat up again. Add spices( I like thyme) you can add some flour to thicken but I never felt like I needed it. Goes great with any kind of bread you have. Simple, filling and easy.

I do loads of stews/soups , mainly veg…..I have loads of frozen stock from out beef and pork bones. I find it’s a great way of not ‘needing’ bread and potatoes.

I am appréhensive rather than pessimistic. I thought I came over slightly angry in this……not sure why. I’ve got a confession. In the end I didn’t take nettles to the party. I took a bottle of wine which I had a glass of, watered down 10:1 as I was driving. You can’t trust the media can you….sending love. M

It is hard to keep cheerful this time of year. I am experimenting with winter salad greens and am enjoying Miner's lettuce (Claytonia), Sculpit, Rock Samphire. I also am munching away on Yakon which I harvested 2 months ago. Aren't you allowed some of your wine for a party?

The hat really suits you. Did you grow many beans and peas last season for using now? Dried ones? Peas and leeks were such a staple in the past, qlthough we've just started to get the leek miner so now I'll need to be netted.

beans from last year have just run out. aiming to grow double this year. leeks are fine if frost damaged. thanks as always Kev. Max

So pleased to see you again! Your breakfast certainly is hearty but I would find it difficult to cope with nettle tea. I have thought of drying blackberry leaves to try as an alternative to my Twinings. Presumably you allow yourself preserved foods such as those tomatoes. I wonder how many other bottled supplies you have. That is certainly an important factor in a climate with such a long hungry gap. I do hope your peas do well. Don't forget that pea shoots are a magnificent vegetable! A couple of trays of thickly planted peas, kept specifically for production of young leaves, will have you eating fresh veg within 3 weeks, and continue on for months Hopefully your broad beans are started by now? I guess it's been too cold there this year for most overwintering veggies. I trust you will have asparagus and sorrel peeping through soon. Bon appetit! And God bless your cow and hens.

It’s odd Ruby Gray. Blackberry tea from frozen berries I find a bit cloying. But looking forward to the camomile and mint coming back. Thanks for watching. Max.

@@MaxGrowingSolo This permaculture channel shows how to pick and fermentyoung blackberry leaves, as black tea is fermented. Then she drues the leaves for tea. She drinks it as is, or blends it with other herbs like chocolate mint. I think that a few dried blackberries In the blend would be refreshing as well.

Randomn question but has the project had any bearing on your health?. Do you notice you sleep better or feel healthier?. Id think if i gave a month off wheat id drop a fair few kgs as i eat so much bread.
@MaxGrowingSolo
@MaxGrowingSolo Год назад
I lost a stone and a half at the beginning. Not much since. I sleep well and am fitter and more cheerful but I put much of that down to siege mentality. I am really enjoying the project and am not craving anything much. I put lack of weight loss down to pretty high fat diet. Am deliberately avoiding keto type diet as it tends to make me pretty low. Thanks so much for your question. Max
