Not really. If they weren't willing to grab a bike of marketplace or similar then could have just bought the cheapest one the right size in that Halfords. It would almost certainly be cheaper than paying Halfords to do the required work on those bikes, and would have a much better chance of surviving the trip.

I agree they're not a "proper bike shop" but I wouldn't be too negative about the mechanics as whole though. They could be very good they could be doing just the basics - there is also the limitation of the business they work for... its most likely here he can only do work for pre-booked slots. Even bike shops want to just replace parts these days.

I'm fairly sure the lack of caution and planning here is intentional. The video would be less interesting if everything went smoothly

Not sure any bike shop would have the right wheel, bearing, cassette etc in stock and the staff to fit it there and then on a Sunday afternoon tbh.

They don't seem to be the best at planning ahead -- such as making a phonecall to the bike shop earlier in the day!

or just buy the cheapest new ones from halfords that are in stock... that would have been my solution, as i dont think they had a restriction of doing the whole line on the same set of bikes

Same here. I can't help but think that this whole thing would've been way more enjoyable for them if they hadn't gotten bikes of which quite literally every component is fucked.

That is in no way a 10 minute job. Cheap bikes sometimes are just not repairable either, not designed to be. Maybe could have put new bearings in but at that point the whole cup has gone. The freewheel (doesn't look like a frehub) looks completely shot too.

@@drsquirrel00 indeed. Bikes, particularly cheap bikes, are a PITA to work on. Plus they’d have had other repairs booked in and new bike builds to do.

Not just cheap but also already in poor condition to start the journey. Just to make an interesting video. A reasonably good bike would have had no problems with this route. I have 1000’s kms on my mountain bike over terrain like this with none of these issues.

Eaven my fairly cheap gravle bike would have no problem w this terrain, I'm sure they've ll got proper bikes but the cheap bikes make for an entertaining video

Everyone keeps talking about the poor quality of the bikes and no one is mentioning what their budget is that they have to try to pull this off. A good bike is very expensive, maybe they could go back to a couple of them being support and having a couple of cheap backup bikes to swap out (provided they haven't already succeeded on willpower alone, something they seem to have no shortage of). Or if you're expecting them to drop 1K on a bike for a single video for a channel that is at around 37K subs (most channels have to have at least 100K to provide enough income to support one person fulltime), then sign up for their Patreon and help make it happen.

at least the guy behind the desk knew what a bike was, this is beyond normal service levels for halfords.

Yes I know he took one of my KOMs a few weeks ago. Looked at his profile on Strava and thought why do I feel like I recognise him. Then I remembered the straight line mission I'd watched on here a few months ago.

@@fieldhouseboys I was just thinking why that you were riding such crap bikes for such a long journey? Surely you thought before they would have been trouble unless that was the point to make a more eventful video?! A decent bike off Ebay or Facebook would have only cost £200 - £400
