This episode has been found to be in conformity with the Catechism by the Institute on the Catechism, under the Subcommittee on the Catechism, USCCB.
📖 Follow along with the official Catechism in a Year Reading Plan (AscensionPress...)
Matrimonial consent is an indispensable element of the Sacrament of Marriage. Fr. Mike explains why it is essential for those entering marriage to express their consent freely and why in the Church’s eyes, “if consent is lacking, there is no marriage.” Fr. Mike also guides us through the Church’s teaching on annulment and clarifies why it can be complex. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 1625-1632.
Please note: The Catechism of the Catholic Church contains adult themes that may not be suitable for children - parental discretion is advised.
Ascension is committed to creating media that helps Catholics grow in their faith. Catechism in a Year promises to do just that - that’s why, no matter what, we’re making it. This podcast is free and always will be. But, we have limited resources. With funding from generous supporters like you, we can do even more than simply create the podcast. Would you consider supporting Ascension’s free media? tinyurl.com/2s.... No amount is too small!
Although not tax-deductible, the financial support we receive goes towards the creation of podcasts and videos that help Catholics grow in their faith. If you’d like to learn more about what we do with gifting, go to AscensionPress.... Thank you and God bless you!

Hello All: I am a convert, 2 years into my chosen and loved Catholic faith. I was married and divorced years prior. I have not applied for annulment but see that I should. A lot of pain will need to be faced. A lot of sin claimed by me. And I need to do this-in my own strength, clearly have not yet. Im in my late 50s. This grieves me even deeper, now. Please pray for me to follow Christ and His will about this. Thank you, and may God bless each of you.

I'll be praying for y'all. I went through an annulment and although it was a long and painful process, to rethink and re-live all the pain and problems that led to our divorce, it was probably one of the best decisions of my whole life. We were both too young to get married in the first place, 20 and 21. I have since been remarried for 33 years, and have a wonderful husband of whom still calls me his bride after all these years. What keeps us in love is the fact that we pray together, volunteer in our church together, and share 5 wonder children and 12 grandchildren together. God is good, He can help you through it.

“Love is never something ready-made, something merely ‘given’ to man and woman; it is always at the same time a ‘task’ which they are set. Love should be seen as something which in a sense never ‘is’ but is always only ‘becoming’, and what it becomes depends upon the contribution of both persons and the depth of their commitment.” -Saint Pope John Paul II 🙏❤🙏

Yes being married is the hardest job there is where two entirely different people stays in one roof trying to get along for the rest of their lives. With God as the center of every marriage nothing is impossible. It is a responsibility of every married couple to bring each other to heaven. So pray for each other husbands and wives. Thank you Fr Mike for always praying for holy marriages in your Sunday mass and singing Salve Regina at the end of the mass. To God be the glory.

I had my first marriage annulled and it was approved. I was married for 4.5 years and it was a very horrible, hurtful time and when I finally got it annulled, that also hurt because the declaration said the marriage did not happen. But I did marry again for all the right reasons and we stayed together until he died 12 years ago. We were married for 29 years and were blessed by God Himself. Now my life belongs only to God for the rest of this life and in the next.

My nullify was such a hard process for me, answering the questions, reliving the pain. It took me a long time. My priest, my Mother, a family fried who was a Msgr, kept prodding me very caring, to complete it. I remember the evening I carried the 'packets to my priest and told him it was complete. It was a huge weight lifted, it was over, I knew that what I had done was right for myself and my children. I completely forgot about it and was honestly surprised when many months later (dont remember how long) I received my Decree of Nullity. What a gift the process is if done with the right people!

Matrimonial consent is given when a man and a woman manifest the will to give themselves to each other irrevocably in order to live a covenant of faithful and fruitful love. Since consent constitutes matrimony, it is indispensable and irreplaceable. For a valid marriage, the consent must have as its object true matrimony and be a human act which is conscious and free and not determined by duress or coercion

Fr. Mike I went through the annulment process 30 years ago. I was married at the age of 30 years old. It was a mixed marriage Catholic/ Jewish. I thought it would work... I said to myself, " I'll never be one of "THOSE" divorced couples. I went into the marriage with fear. We were counseled by our priest not to get married... we knew better, we did it anyway. Three and a half terrible, terrible years went by till I chose to get a divorce. As a man it was very hard to move forward... mind numbing, spiritual darkness... too much to mention here. Going through the annulment process was the hardest thing I ever did in my life! Even at the age of 66 years old I still weep. The annulment process is very thorough. You, family, siblings, friends, faiths, drugs, drinking....how you were raised, what was your family like? Your mom? Your dad? Brother? Sister? Alcoholism and much, much more. I wept constantly!!! I got angry... WHY ALL THESE QUESTIONS!!!! Why ALL THESE STUPID QUESTIONS!!!! It took weeks to answer the questions because the pain was excruciating and that was on a good day. But through Gods good grace ( giving me what I need ) I got through it. After the paper work was done... know what I realized.... I married what I knew! My mom and dad got divorced when I was sixteen. My dad was a terrible alcoholic. My mom and dad were never supportive and never gave emotional support. Our family ( after the age of 11 years old ) never did anything as a family. There was abuse and verbal put downs.... nothing was good enough. I married what I knew. When this hit me, I wept like St. Peter. Very, very bitter tears. But in those tears there was great healing!!! After 2 years the annulment came. I stayed single for 17 years. I remarried at 50. My wife is truly a gift from Almighty God. Our first date was at Sunday mass. Her mom was present too. The rest is history! If I could say one thing, if you are single and Catholic, get yourself a good Catholic man or woman. It's worth the wait.... trust me. God Bless you Fr. Mike and everyone doing Catechism in a Year+++

Very touching! I'm glad you were able to find healing through it as that's what the process is about. Some of us have much more baggage than others which ads greatly to how difficult the marriage can be. Then when one tries to work on the baggage and the other doesn't but does like for the one working on it continues to push buttons to stir the one trying to heal. Well, you get the picture. Things should not be so difficult that one of the spouses seriously contemplates suicide a different time through the years. I'm happy for you to have found someone that will go through the rest of your life shoulder to shoulder. Supporting one another on your journeys to heaven. Beautiful!!

The topic of matrimony is a tough one. Having been married then going through a divorce was very hard. However I found going through the Annulment process was even more difficult I was granted the Annulment but I felt like my heart was torn again. I’m glad I did go through it but it’s hard reliving what happened then waiting 2 years to get an answer. It’s by no means an easy process but I know necessary

I was married in the Catholic Church but was way too young to be married, we were barely 20 and 21. After trying to stay together for the sake of children the marriage was very painful. I chose to go to marriage counseling through Catholic Charities but my husband refused to go. The problems in our marriage was so painful, I was thinking of suicide. Finally my counselor told me to end it with divorce which was painful within itself. After several years I remarried by the Justice of the Peace due to not having an annulment (that I didn't know about). The annulment process was difficult and time consuming but was one of the best things I've ever done. When it went through after about 9 months, we had a small but very beautiful wedding in the Catholic church with only family and best friends. I advise anyone who was married in the church to get an annulment. As Fr Mike said, it is a healing process. ❤

19:38 Holy Matrimony is a sacrament of the Church. It is me, declaring that this Sacrament of Marriage and family, Holy Matrimony, is the way I believe Jesus is calling me to build up the body of Christ. For a Catholic couple to enter into the Sacrament of Matrimony, they're saying this is the way I believe that Jesus Christ is calling me to serve His Church. I believe that this is the way Jesus Christ is calling me to be His disciple. It's a day for the entire Church. It's the day where you're declaring discipleship for the Lord in this particular vocation.

Praying for Father Mike and all in CIY! Matrimonial Consent How are we going to focus on our faith together? You have to consider how the two of you will make your faith a focal point of the marriage. Consider what can unite the two of you and how you can turn to your religion in times of need. Think of what you can do to focus on your faith every day of your marriage. Such Catholic pre-marriage questions encourage couples to find ways to find a balance between their marriage and their faith. How will we raise our kids and instill religion into their lives? One of the most important parts of Catholic pre-marriage preparation is to consider how you will handle a family. How will the two of you accept children and instill your faith into them? How can you ensure that your family is united in faith from the time that your children are born? These are important things to consider before you walk down the aisle.🙏❤️

If freedom is lacking, the marriage is invalid. The process of applying for nullity is meant to be a process of healing, to know self even better and stand befire God in this new and deeper way. Better to regret trying than to regret not trying. Matrimony is a call to discipleship to serve the church in a particular vocation, so its important to get married in a church.

As always, many thanks Fr. Mike for the wonderful way you explain things. Having gone through the annulment process myself, I totally endorse your reasons for doing so! I learned an awful lot about myself and what marriage really is -and a big reason why I have now been very happily married for over 30 years! After 20+ years in Pre-Cana ministry, I truly loved your explanation about the reason/need to be married in the Church. On the application form that asks "Where are you going to be married?," fully 98-99% of the engaged couples put down where their "reception" is going to be held. Something for engaged couples to think about. In our years in this ministry, we have had several different pastors. I am aware of two occasions where the wedding party arrived at the church directly from the bachelor/bachelorette party. One pastor informed them that they should just go to their reception and reschedule the wedding as they needed to be sober to give proper consent. The other pastor informed the couple that he could not marry them - and suggested that they take a YEAR to reconsider what they are entering into!

Thank you Father Mike and God bless you! God bless all families of CIY,❤️🙏❤️ Catholic marriage counseling is to strengthen the bond between the couple by addressing the issues. The counselor works with the couple to identify the root causes of those problems. And then, helps them develop strategies to overcome them. One fundamental principle of this counseling is the belief that marriage is a sacred bond between a man and a woman. And this bond is instituted by God. Therefore, the counseling focuses on helping the couple understand and embrace the sacramental nature of their marriage. It provides a safe and supportive environment for couples to explore their feelings and work through their issues. For many Catholic couples, their faith is an essential part of their marriage. Catholic marriage counseling can help couples explore their faith together and deepen their spiritual connection. Which can provide a sense of comfort and support during difficult times.

The annulment process for me was a loving process that helped my ex-wife and me become better friends and close our relationship in a good way. I strongly recommend seeking counseling in this process because it helps with any new relationship AND helps you to understand what you are doing when you get married - that's what it was for me and my wife and my ex-wife and her husband and my daughter by my first marriage.

I started my annulment right after I received a civil divorce and so thankful I did. I was 33. I never remarried, but I felt a huge relief after it was over. Funny...my divorce took over a year and my declaration of nullity took less than a year.

Father Mike, my marriage of 27 years and 4 children was annulled. I do not understand how this is possible. The grounds were that we were too young. He was 21 and I was 20. In 1964 this was not unusual. Can you explain this.

I’m not a theologian so I pray I spell this out well enough to give it justice. Joseph accepted Mary’s vow as a consecrated virgin and still agreed to betrothal and marriage. In Numbers 30:6-8, it talks about an ancient Israelite man can accept the woman’s vow or not- Joseph accepted it. There was a vow of abstinence that some made even then. Some Essenes practiced this too. Joseph honored it. Also, He knew even priests and Levites could not touch the ark of the covenant and since Mary was the new ark of the covenant, it gives purpose and reason that He agreed to accept her chastity even after marriage. At that time, it was permitted. Their marriage was considered valid due to this acceptance of Joseph for his bride. If you have not yet read Brant Petrie’s study called Mary: The Bible and the Mother of God. It is a terrific study on the topic of Mary

I dont mean to sound like i am contradicting church teaching but i have true concern as divorce has increased so much and decrees of nullities rise with them. This ground of consent i totally agree with the concern is how easily it appears one can manipulate it. The church at least in america has the common practice requirement to seek divorce (a serious offence against the natural law) pior to seeking the churches decree of nullity. It seems as though it would be easy to implaint false emotion of the wedding day and the validity of consent plus you have all these people pushing for divorce and then pushing for nullity. I am concerned for all the souls involved on these tribunal and bishops as well as the married who are forced into divorce and have to face such a stacked deck to their marriage.

I believe that is why there's paperwork asked for from family, such as parents, and close friends at time of marriage that were closely involved with the couple at the time of dating and marriage. They are trying to get a clear picture.

@@kathywiens9852 I agree but with having divorce as a prerequisite many times parents family and friends draw lines and are influecened by the outcome of divorce this can manipulate such witness statements. The idea of destroying family civilly and the church sorts it out is like commiting a sin with the knowledge that it is a sin and then presuming Gods mercy after the fact. I say this with much love for the churches authority over the sacrament but with hurt that they do not see the amount of authority they the church gives to the state to rule the marriage without properly catechizing the parties of the 3 ends of marriage and that suffering and sacrifice tho not ideal is required for the salvation of souls.

@@nathanjones3621 I so agree with you . The process ought to be reversed. We came to the Church to marry. IF there is a serious question as to whether or not the marriage is valid then the Church ought to have that annulment process at that point- BEFORE there is a civil divorce. And IF the marriage is indeed not found to be invalid then the pastors and community need to do more to encourage healing and reconciliation of that marriage- at that there is more chance of reconciliation than the way it is done now where the " church' ( pastors and family and freinds ) will tell a dissatisfied spouse that 'oh maybe you can just get an annulment ".. come see the pastor after the civil divorce is final .. It actually encourages the breakdown of the family. And I take issue with the many people on this thread who are saying that annulment process is healing. Healing for who ? the person who wanted out most likely. Not for the person who desired to stay married- wanted reconciliation and remained faithful the the vows. And what is the actual canonical purpose of the process of a nullity investigation ? it is not about healing . Its a process to find out the truth - was this a valid marriage that was entered into or not. If someone wants to 'heal" then go see a counselor, spend time in prayer, go to adoration. Go on your tribunals website and you can see the questions and then just go write them out on your own and reflect on them.. . And go to confession for whatever sins you have committed. commit to loving your spouse . And then go and do what you can to fix your children's family back together .

@@MM-gu8tk I have been standing for my marriage officially since april in the group I'm with but well before that I stood alone. When i stood alone and still today i sought/seek direction in scripture tradition and Magesterium checking everything I read and how I interpreted it with those more educated then I in the faith like canonists, preist educated in history and so on. In my reading I ran across the desire of Luther, he wanted the state/government to have full authority over Marriage. Code of canon law expresses that the civil authority has governance dispensed to them from the Church over the property of a marriage and in cases of violence (I mean violence not just perceived violence) where a necessary seperation happens civil authority can and should be used for protection of the physical wellbeing of those involved but and this is clear in canon law if it looks as though civil authority may be stepping on the toes of the sacramental bond that still remains the church has the authority to keep it out of civil authority. Living in a no fault state I currently cant have custody of my kids because they say I spiritually abuse them by teaching them to have hope in the Sacrament and encouraging them to pray for reconciliation. I am told doing this is abusive and "alienates" my wife but by civil law she can treat me as if I dont exsist anymore in hers or the kids lives. The Church does not want to get involved cause it will be a legal issue of alienation and look like they are picking sides. Yet it is their moral obligation to seek that the natural and divine laws are upheld. We really have to look at the saints for how and when to do this. It is said best in scripture in 1 sam obedience is greater then sacrifice my obedience to the vows I made to God my wedding day is greater then myself the sacrifice.
