Quilting books have been so hard to part with, but I’m trying to approach it with a reality check for myself. How many quilts can I really make in my lifetime? By the look of the number of books I’ve purchased, I must have thought I was immortal. 🤦🏽‍♀️

As you declutter your books, this is a good time to flip over the book shelves (if they are removable) to prevent the shelf from sagging and warping.

Electronic housekeeping is important. I try to clean e-mails and photos on a monthly basis. For the photos, I always make sure that I have placed them in the proper album. But there’s a lot of pictures that I’ve taken that I just don’t need. It saves space on my phone and tablet and it also makes it easier to find things.

I was pretty ruthless in getting rid of books during 2023 because I wanted to move my quilting books to a smaller space. I donated the ones I no longer wanted to my local library for their used book sales. I kept only books that were instructional or that match up with my current quilting interests. I didn’t buy any books during 2023. There are so many great free patterns online that I can make do with those. Or I can come up with my own designs because I don’t make anything complicated. Plus, I have all those patterns I clipped out of the old magazines I talked about yesterday.

I feel your pain. Before we moved 10 years ago, I had over 600 favorite books (not all quilting, LOL, only 6 were handicrafts ) And yes I did reread them every couple of years. After the move I only have 110 of my absolutely must own books (9 of them are handicrafts).

Friends of the Library Found lots of out of print publications, including signed copies Years ago, I purged quilt books beyond my capabilities to my daughter's friend's mother. She had complicated, time-consuming wall quilts displayed in her home. Perfect person who could actually appreciate these near new books that I bought for $1 - $3 apiece, ($25 - $45 original price). Though I'm attached to my books, I don't feel any regrets because she loves them more. ❤

Look for hospice thrift shops. People frequent them because it is a great way to support hospice activities for people who are passing as well as their families. The one I frequent is very well staffed with volunteers and really high quality items that generally move quckly. They love to get books of all types. I felt good about my donation to them last year.

Wow, I didn’t know there was such a thing😳. I think that’s a fantastic idea!!! I will certainly look for that option. All of my donations of items and shopping toooo😝 go to the County resources where they give assistance to qualified persons. I live close to 2 counties here in TN. Thank y’all it’s amazing what we can learn from each other. God’s blessings 🥰🙏🏻✝️❤️😀

There are so many tv shows, videos, and online stories about "treasures" found in people's stuff or in thrift stores -- it feeds my fear that I might give away something valuable! I have to remind myself that it's just about what's valuable to me. If someone else finds it's worth something, then that's a bonus to them, and they earned it. If would still be worth nothing if it were buried in my stuff!

I added very few books this year because I learned in last year's declutter that although the pretty pics are alluring, I only have so much time. I also have learned that while I make simpler quilts for friends and family, the quilts I want to make for me are things like farmer's wife, Dear Jane, and some challenging kaleidoscope like things. I also am very interested in FMQ (I have even taught a beginner class where I work!). I still get American Patchwork and Quilting because most of the others are modern quilts in which I have no interest. I love looking at the work there. Yesterday I spent a great deal of time trying to unsubscribe from a ton of e mails. I hope that saves me time (and temptation to buy things I don't really need!). My phone is my constant companion but I really don't want it to be boss of my time. I accepted a few Block magazines from a friend but now I think I regret the space. So they may go. This challenge is making me recognize wants vs needs as I do it every year!

Because of our move last year I purged so many books to our christian thrift store. These women are ardent crafters. I asked that they first notify their sewing groups and on my second load they took them in to the office so the women could come to see them and were sold reasonably to them.. These books and magazines went back to 1969. In those days that is how I learned. It felt good being able to help others who were in need.

I love quilts, undoubtedly because I grew up in a family that treasured cotton quilts and wool comforters for practical purposes and sentimental value. I’m just starting to make quilts as a retirement hobby. Consequently, I’m learning about quilting from RU-vid videos and am not collecting much paper-based information/inspiration. I own two quilting books, 10-15 quilt patterns, and no magazines-the dedicated shelf space is about three inches. Now, I must admit my love for books, particularly nonfiction ones. So….today I’m going to review all these books. There’s finite shelf space, so there could be some difficult choices ahead. 🤷‍♀️. Our local used bookstore takes donations and provides store credit for future purchases.

I have been in a not-quilting rut. Then yesterday, I had a text from a woman who works with foster kids. I had given her two quilts that went to girls she had or was fostering. Then later she asked for two “boy” quilts, and they wanted red and black ones. So I made those. Yesterday’s text was to tell me about a 17 year old boy who declined a quilt in the presence of two other teen boys, later texted her to ask for one to take to college. He wants purple, green and white. I pulled from my stash, and decided on a “stack and flip”. I may need more purple. While I think about it, I will catch up on my garbage, magazines, and books.

Okay I am a little slow but just went through 2 years of Block Magazines, only found 2 things I wanted to make. Yikes those were 2 expensive patterns just cancelled that subscription. Found a couple of sewing books that can go. Contacted my local quilt shop and they told of a place that might want them. Next month I need to do a scrapbooking declutter as that takes up part of my sewing space.

Today I am working as little on declutterring as yesterday with the magazines... I did not buy any new books since I decluttered books in 2023. This is one of the hardest ones for me. When we built our sewing room, 20-something years ago, we knew that one entire long wall would be taken up with full height bookcases for the start of our alphabetical run of fiction books (continued in the hallway, the "office" and the spare bedroom)... which, despite periodic culls, are now overflowing the space for them. And we made the mistake of installing bookcases that are deeper, front-to-back, than your average fiction book, so there's plenty of space in frornt of the books for every shelf to accumulate clutter.... and that's before you get on to the the single bookcase for sewing-related books (our sewing is historical costume based, so this includes a lot of big art books for reference pictures too). AND the sewing room is shared so, although there is a certain amount of overlap, there are essentially the focus subjects for two people's sewing interests among those books.

Since it seems Barnes and Noble Bookstore is closing it will be harder then ever to get books or magazines. My quilt shops do not carry magazines and I like to look at and purchase magazines for inspiration instead of always having to go online. Online has become more of a chore then it is worth in most cases for me, give me a book or magazine to hold and look at. I do have limited space but would gladly give up other things instead.

I try to go through the books a few times a year and take some to the charity shop. I taught textile design for many years, so have many books on different areas of textiles, weaving, embroidery, conceptual textiles, and so on. I feel these are a part of me, although, to be honest, I never look at them much now in retirement. My problem is, because I live a long way from any quilt or book shops (in Scottish highlands) I buy books I fancy on Amazon, so find when they come, they are often not as interesting as I thought. I try to return them immediately if so, but not every one, as I feel Amazon may cut me off if I do! This is more about hope over experience (as my husband says) as I always feel there might be some great ideas I am missing. Hence, the clear outs several times a year, because few books actually contain anything new or excitingly different.

Oh this is a hard one! I am a book addict and have two entire bookshelves filled to the brim with nothing but crafting books. 😬 And that’s after a massive purge last summer!

I have only bought 1 book since I cleaned mine out last year. I do have a sneaky feeling I’m ready to let go of some of those too.❤

Hello Karen.Last year, I did a cull of my books last year.. I kept some of my books on the back of my desk. I purchased 4 books this year. I bought a heavy duty book shelf. I now have more space on my desk which I now can use as a cutting station.

Karen, this is an off topic question, but some time ago one of your sponsors was a mattress company. I can't find the video in which you mentioned it and I'd be interested in reviewing that brand, which you talked about favorably. Thanks, Linda... love your channel.

Im behind on the challenge, but am planning my catch up. Unfortunately Christmas declutter and clean up ended up with things being stuffed back in my sewing room yesterday. I’m happy that I did some preliminary clean up before that happened, so it isn’t tragic like other years. I do think I am ready to get rid of magazines!

Book question: how do I stop my oh-so-kind family buying me quilting and craft books? I've told them, straight out, but for Christmas my sister gave me a five lovely quilt books she'd picked up in charity shops, 'just in case i found them useful'. So well meant, but driving me mad!

My feeling is you thank her for them and then do as you wish with them. If they don’t make the cut they go right out the door in the donation box.

If you want to hit the point home. Hand them right back. But if you want to avoid her feelings being hurt, quietly drop them off at your local shop

I can't do it today, but I do plan on sharing some of my books with a new quilter. She'll be ready in March, so the declutter challenge will work well to share materials out to her.

Every year this gets easier because I have done it from the beginning and really think about what to bring in because of your challenge. Thank you! I do have a feeling when I head up to my studio to go through them again 1/2 of what is left will go as well! Great series, thank you!!!

Hi Karen. Always great tips and suggestions. Any chance I can get more info on the garage sale your guild puts on? You have mentioned this before and it’s something I would like to propose to my guild but wanted to understand how this is set up. Thank you for all the knowledge and tips you continue to so generously share.

I keep a binder with my favorite magazine projects. Organized by types, baby quilts, table runners, etc. That way I do not hold on to the whole magazine, just what I need.
