"It's the final countdown!!"
Camino De Santiago Day 40: Sarria to Portomarin, Spain
22.7 km (14.105 miles)
The morning started off very noisy, crowded, and uphill. What a different vibe after 39 days of walking! It felt like a great way to welcome in Day 40!! I sort of loved it and sort of hated it. Patience. We're a work in progress.
There was also several support vehicles along the way for groups of new pilgrims. We noticed most did not carry their backpacks and their shoes looked so clean! I have to confess, I'm a little jealous really. No hairspray, hair straightener, or conditioner for 40 days has made my hair very dry and frankly a frayed mess. Birds will start nesting in it soon I'm afraid. I've seen them eyeing me.
We saw a lovely pilgrim couple we've met along the way from England and Ireland. They will be arriving in Santiago the same day as us. That's super exciting since most of the pilgrims we've met are days ahead of us.
The morning clouds and fog all but disappeared by midday and the sun appeared bringing with it heat and welcome light. We enjoyed a few cafe/bars/sangrias/cervezas, but for the most part, we were continuously moving. For 9 hours. My foot pain really slowed us down. Yes, unfortunately, it has returned.
Typically at home I can hike 3 miles an hour comfortably, so this just increases my frustration. It's me trying to keep up with Andre on this trip which normally, it's the opposite. Despite Andre's total hip replacement and recent spinal fusion, he has been the one setting the pace and encouraging me to continue.
As we approached Portomarin, I forgot one crucial step. Take the path furthest to the right while making the descent into the city. I even had a drawing and a reminder to choose the path on the right in my journal. And I dropped the ball. Completely forgot about it. I insisted we should continue down the traditional trail.
As soon as we reached the path downward, I realized my mistake. I did not choose wisely, I chose poorly. Especially for a pellegrina like myself who is fearful of steep downslopes. Also high bridges over large bodies of water. More on that in a minute.
Andre also assessed the situation and with his knowledge of my mad skills, he had me hand him my backpack as he carried both packs and I slid down the path on my butt. There's no other way to say it. I buttslid down the mountain.
By the time we reached the bottom, 2 other pilgrims greeted me with laughter and cheers. I actually felt a little proud for hiking such a steep, rocky descent. Even if it was on my butt.
My fear continued while hiking over the bridge into Portomarin. I got very wobbly and took very little photos. Then came an extremely steep ascent set of stairs greeting us, I personally think Portomarin is a pilgrim deathtrap..I mean obstacle course. At one point, I almost had a panic attack. But I did it, so that's what counts, right?
By the time we arrived to our hotel, I was so wiped out, I did not want to take another step. Andre grabbed a pizza and some noodles, we ate on our private deck and in the lobby, and enjoyed just plain chilling. I did walk a few feet to see the church next door, but that was it. The day was fulfilling and rewarding but also very draining.
We've talked about how we wish we were not so tired by the time we reach our destination. We want to explore the villages but sometimes it's all we can do to keep our eyes open.
Ending on an extremely positive note..we did hit our 100 km mark today!! Not only does that mean we have completed 700 km, but it is a milestone in the pilgrim world to get our Compostela. It also means home is just around the corner. And we do miss home.
Casi estábamos en casa!!

And I’m caught up! 💗 Andrea- what a complete inspiration you are, knowing how you struggled with your injury the rest of the way. Also, in case I forget to mention this at the end of these videos - thank you for taking all these pictures and wonderful video, And Then - taking all the time to create these fantastic vlogs! I researched the CF for 4 years (by accident, because we were supposed to go in 2020). I have read so many blogs and watched hundreds and hundreds of videos. Yours are so informative and show the walk so beautifully; just what someone wants to see who is doing research. (There are many where the pilgrim just talks to the camera and doesn’t really show us the path or the towns 🙄) And I absolutely love how you and Andre have enjoyed every single experience on your journey. Truly inspirational. Be proud of all you accomplished and are sharing with all of us. ❤. Thank you. Thank you

Thank you so much!! 💗 I'm proud of you too!! It's quite a journey!! I agree, so many vlogs never showed me where they stayed, what the town was like, etc. So, I really wanted to highlight things I would want to see myself..thanks for noticing that. 🥰 Still a few more to go, but getting closer!! 🚶‍♀️🚶

Michael Jackson happens to be a "beer hunter", who was checking every bar to see that the "Estrella Galicia" was served in a proper way!

We also heard that there is a belief among some people that Michael Jackson is still alive, like Elvis, and he is the one who created these ‘tags’

Heading into Portomarin, there is a third option, even more to the left, that takes you on a much more gradual descent along the road. I took that route because I had knee issues.

The intro to your vlog brought back bad memories. Upon leaving Sarria, I suffered a couple days of depression. Our beloved, peaceful Camino was taken over by imposters. The Camino was turned into a Disney vacation. My German friend, who had completed five Caminos, calls them Camino Tourists. I suffered. We suffered. A dozen of us got drunk in Palas de Rei and we were angry, sad, disappointed, frustrated. One of our group said: "The Camino challenges us physically and mentally. Maybe this is just another bloody test." We thought about that, shrugged our shoulders, and drank more beer. It sounds like you guys were affected as well. Sorry to sound so negative, but this was a huge bad turn in our moods and outlook. I think if the powers that be increased the Compostela minimum distance to 300km instead of 100 km, this nonsense would all go away. But maybe, just maybe, is this the effect they want? A massive population arriving every day? Anyway, the 100 km mark was epic! Three of us bought beers a kilometre before the marker at a corner store, then cracked them open in celebration of our 700 km accomplishment. I will never forget that moment. I finished my Camino on this day, July 2nd. It's too bad we weren't a little closer together at the finish line. Cheers guys

I so wish we would've met you on the trail Mark, though we did cross paths a few times..so close!! You were much faster than us though. Yes, this day sucked the energy right out of me. I felt "let down" because I really thought having more people on the trail would be energizing. I heard a few people call them terrigrinnos (sp?) = Tourist Pilgrims. We missed our pilgrim family and felt very out of sorts on this day. I finally had to tune out the negative thoughts and realized that they too are on a journey, and to not let it affect ours or us to affect their journey.. though at times I wanted to blurt out how far and long we'd been walking, like somehow we were more deserving..but yes, this day I was feeling very let down and depression kicked in. I wonder if many pilgrims who started like us also felt these same emotions. And to think, on this day of our sadness, you were celebrating in Santiago De Compostela!! That makes my memories of this day a bit brighter. Thank you for sharing that!! 🚶‍♀️🚶
