Old Man and the CDT

I intend to hike the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) in 2024 and will vlog my experience. Follow me under "Old Man and the CDT."
I am Mike Current, 61-years-old, and retired military. I served for over 30 years in the US Army.
After retirement, I opened two small businesses. But after a few years, I sold both businesses because they were taking time away from pursuing personal goals, like hiking and sailing.
I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in 2020 and Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2022. I vlogged (video journaled) my experiences under "Old Man and the PCT" and "Old Man and the AT", respectively.
I sailed around the Chesapeake Bay in my Tayana 37 sailboat over the summer of 2023 and vlogged the experience under the RU-vid channel "Old Man and the Sea."
I do not monetize my videos in any manner. However, if you would like to contribute to helping veterans thru-hike as a form of therapy for PTSD, please consider donating to Warrior Expeditions at warriorexpeditions.org/

Hello Energizer. I am the mother of early bird. Thank you so much for sharing all your videos. It's really fantastic to see the landscapes you cross, your difficulties, your mutual help and above all the enormous courage and determination of you all. I'm very impressed. You have drawn up a magnificent description of Early bird which corresponds very well to her character.::)) Good luck for the next miles and the next adventures !👍🙂

Any people that post negative comments should take a hike! i bet those people never leave the couch. i appreciate the effort it takes people like you to record all this info, especially after walking all day in the wind and rain and blistering sun.

Energizer, I’m proud of you for speaking up about any negativity you may get. I also created a video for every single day on the PCT and people have no idea how much of a commitment that is between the time it takes to film, edit and especially try and upload when in these small trail towns. I truly appreciate them and have been enjoying them. Just know these videos are for you and your loved ones and if anyone else gets some enjoyment or knowledge from them that that’s a bonus. Whenever I got negativity while on my PCT hike from a video, in my next days intro I was simple welcome them to not watch anymore if something I was saying or showing bothered them. It’s your hike so show/say what ever you want or not. I appreciate you and your style so hike on! Cheers, Marmalade

Mike don’t change anything you are doing. Your videos are outstanding and informative and for those of us who can’t make the hike ourselves we sincerely appreciate them. And btw, you run marathons the same way I used to. I’ve run Boston, Marine Corps, Los Angeles, Mision Bay and many more but don’t ask me about the sights or scenery on any of them. It’s all about the mile marks, pacing, water stops and splits. Running a marathon was as much a mental exercise for me as it was physical. Again, we love your videos and you have nothing to apologize for.

IMO your videos are the perfect combo of detail, hiking footage, scenery and wildlife. As a PCT section hiker and aspiring thru hiker, the details you provide are exactly the info I like and match the way I approach the trail. I look forward to your videos each day, especially since I'm sidelined this year by health issues. You're fun to watch and I appreciate your attitude. You're doing awesome and are a great motivator to the 60+ crew! Thank you!🌻💛

As a thru-hiker, I truly appreciate the effort you put forth in making these videos. I always viewed them as “detailed” and “trailistic” in content. Thanks for your transparency, your service to our Nation, and inspiration to many of us. God bless as you continue your CDT journey.

Gooooood morning Mike, Every morning I watch your video as I have done with your other 2 hikes. As a non hiker I am amazed with the information you provide to everyone regarding everything From equipment to the actual hiking the trail and everything in between. The fact you are a positive person is evident in how you live your life so setting boundaries to people who are most likely jealous of your accomplishments, such a wise thing to do. You are such a inspiration to sooooo many hikers or not !! You set a standard for many to acquire no doubt have in other areas of your life. Don't change a thing ~ motor on Mike and stay safe❤

I’ve watched every video when you did the PCT, about half of the AT, and every one so far for the CDT! I really appreciate what you do- it gives those of us who don’t have the privilege of actually hiking these spectacular trails a really great look at the country and the people doing the hike. You bring out a lot of details but don’t get lost on things that have no value to those who are watching. Thanks for your effort- I really appreciate it!

Your videos are "just right" I found you by good fortune as you began your PCT and remember you saying at the end that this was the end of your posts. I was so excited when you posted your AT plans. As an introvert, I understand being a lone hiker, but also absolutely enjoying when the opportunity arises to hike with others. We have learned well how to adapt. Keep doing it the way you want. I appreciate your one day at a time approach.

Hi Mike - Thanks for answering a lot of my questions. It seems interesting learning about all the people on trail and the reasons they are hiking. I was away, and can't wait to catch up on the last week of videos. So I can't imagine why people would have negative comments other than they are jealous of your accomplishments. Love the format, and everything about your videos. Can't thank you enough!

Dear Energizer, You are inspirational and educational. You help us to be better hikers and better people. I really do not know how you do it - I am so zonked at the end of a day hiking I am pleased to be able to raise my tent and boil some water for hot Knorr noodles. And then crash. To make videos on top of that - wow - that is commitment and consistency. I have not seen any other hiker blogs to match yours, while also crunching the miles that you do. Please do not stop, you make our days brighter and more bearable. You are the best - a hiker’s hiker, an example of the best men America produces. Duty, Honor, Country, Trail!

Thank you! Just to warm you up, here are some questions for the next time...What does your wife think about your lone hiking/boating adventures? How do you deal with the loneliness of the trail? What has been your favorite part of the trail so far? Are there places you want to hike again from the trails you've been on? Have you listened to any podcasts or books on this trip while hiking that you can recommend? What do you think about on the long stretches of hiking? How do you manage to edit these films every night on the trail? And, perhaps a question for later...what are you considering for next year's adventures (big trails overseas? sailing?)? Anyhow, thanks for taking us along and the great hiking Inspo! PS--Hokas rock!

10:00 I like the details you give. I'm learning from you. You're not over complicated. I'm following along every day. I'm working towards attempting the PCT next year. I don't want to watch your PCT videos because I think it would be too much information, but learning from you and your style on the CDT is helping me. I'm also an army vet, only 7 years though, but with my own issues I don't want to talk about. So your videos are helping me a lot. I believe you can do this CDT thing. Thank you for your continued videos and vlogging.

Hey Energizer - this is Trailwine - we met on the PCT at Seiad Valley and then at Callahan’s Lodge - at the time you were on your first of the triple crown thru hikes - little did I know that you would complete the triple crown. I’ve followed you on YT since then and have been immensely impressed with your hiking commitment and stamina - I’ve enjoyed all your videos and can’t imagine anyone having negative comments! I watch and like all your videos but seldom make comments. I’m a few years older than you which, I believe, allows me to appreciate what you have and are accomplishing. I have no doubt that you will complete the CDT in the next few months. You are quite amazing! I’m curious what you will hike next? Time will tell. Keep up the great work. My wife comes from a Marine family - Hoorah!!!!

Videos are never too long! Are you making the expected amount of progress that you wanted? I imagine that you are, but some of those days with the weather I was wondering. What a blessing to hear that you had such expert help getting over some dodgy sections being with Early Bird. I'm sure that she also appreciated and valued your company as much as you did hers.

Man, that was a great video, but there is a lot to unpack! First of all, I thank you for taking the time to provide this glimpse into your summer. Second, I leave some (hopefully!) positive comments from time to time, but I never read other comments. I can't believe there are people out there being negative! Third, as far as I can tell, your videos are about 10 minutes long. That is the perfect length, in my humble opinion! Thanks again for your service Hooah!

Energizer, my wife an I have been fans since the PCT trail hike. We appreciate the fact that you are not monetizing your videos. It seems too many hikers choose to hike to make income. You can sense they aren’t on trail because they love the outdoors. Your videos have always exhibited your joy being out in nature. The length is perfect; keep enjoying those hikes and sharing with those who prefer to watch your channel.

Energizer, thank you so much for sharing your thru-hiking experience with us. I did some hiking/backpacking when I was younger, and I have done some video-making. Both endeavors take a great deal of planning, preparation, time, and energy. You do these with steadiness, determination, and humor (and at such an advanced age😉 -- I just turned 66 and I am in awe of your physical and mental stamina). After watching hundreds of thru-hiking vlogs on RU-vid for years, since the onset of COVID-19, I find yours to be some of the best. Keep doing what you are doing in the way that suits you and certainly don't take any negative comments seriously. I comment in a positive, encouraging, and sometimes humorous way -- it's the least I can do to reciprocate for you sharing your adventures. You are an inspiration and a pleasure to watch. I also appreciate that you don't monetize your videos and instead promote Warrior Expeditions, to which I have contributed due to your videos.👍

Mike, great video. I've been following you since you did the PCT during covid, it was a great distraction and learning. I'm about the same age as you and interested in doing the PCT after I retire. If you get a chance sometime, it would be great to hear your thoughts on what kind of adjustments are needed for an older hiker vs a younger one, even if you are in good shape and train as a somewhat older person. Saying that as someone trying to remain fit, but still recognizing that I can't do some of the things I used to do. You're an inspiration to many.

That was so good. At a much lower level than you, I am constantly grappling with what is and what isn’t an appropriate physical challenge to aim for. Your videos are endlessly inspirational in that regard. Your companions sound fantastic but I am absolutely confident that their hikes have been exponentially enhanced by hiking with you. I shared your quote about not knowing why God has kept you on this planet for so long with my family. Cheers from Croatia (before returning to 🇦🇺next week)!
