Build up those legs. I think you climb to about 13,000 feet or so here in Colorado. Adventure on.

After all the hiking you do Sara I'm sure it doesn't really bother you very much, but going downhill kills my right knee, so I kind of like the uphill part of a hike more. Atb Glenn.

I greatly prefer downhill! Though steep downhill does bother my knees also after a couple hours.

Showers are soo great after a long hot hike! Where is your umbrella/sun shade that you used to carry? Happy Trails!

OUCH on the cactus!! Fortunately, I've never experienced that! ... Also, I don't remember which hiker made this video that I saw in the past few days, but the hiker referred to you by name saying they did something based on what you did. Sorry that's so vague! I'm considering rewatching videos from the past couple days! (I already know I can eliminate some videos, like ASMR videos, for instance.)

@Allen Schubert - Applesauce mentioned "Sara Dhooma" to John and Amy when he and his wife did trail magic for them at Newfound Gap, and Gatlinburg TN. It had to do with putting deodorant on her feet to help prevent blisters. See 14: 10 here: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-l_nMKXBlsNs.html

Why is it that most long distance hikers carry trekking pole but very few actually know how they are best used? Watch a video, all you hikers it's not that hard

YAY Kitchener-Waterloo is on the map!!! What, no shower beer? Sacrilege! A different note: Sunday hike above Ramona Falls on PCT to 3774, little snow patches. This Sunday will be going to 4200' and report back on snow. I hear Southern Oregon has snow cover at 5000'.

Oh, I beat Willard and John to the punch today! They must be napping 😂😂😂

@@johnwilson6954 Darn that Willard! But I can't seem to find his comment here. If you are around during PCT Days this summer, we three should definitely meet up for a lemonade.
@johnwilson6954
@johnwilson6954 5 лет назад
@@memathews - That's strange that you can't find his comment. Of course, it was easier previously when YT used a capital "W" instead of the current "head and shoulders" icon. What I do, is click on the "SORT BY" button, then "NEWEST FIRST". This updates and arranges all comments from oldest at the bottom, to newest at the top. I then read all comments beginning at the bottom of the page, and read upwards. On my screen, that puts Willard's comment directly below yours (by two hours).

@@memathews - Interesting - Last spring, I had given some thought to coming out to PDX for last year's PCT days, due to them having more UL hiker-centric vendors than AT Trail Days, and to meet Sara and the well known west coast based hikers that seem to show up there (Erin Saver in particular). Then, I encountered some medical issues that kept me at home. So, yes, at some point I would like to make it out there, and would be pleased to make your acquaintance. Thanks for the offer!

What the fuck , no beer in the shower!!!! Are you going to do the gila or the high route ? Just wondering , so many times to cross the river with no bridges maybe one . What will Sara do , a new dance across some rocks or maybe a tap dance across some logs or a swim dance across the river , Who knows only time will tell.

@gaylewalker4239
@gaylewalker4239 5 лет назад
So what do you do with that water source that was so gross looking?
@johnwilson6954
@johnwilson6954 5 лет назад
@Gayle Walker - The short answer is that they drink it...😲🤢🤮. Water in the arid deserts of New Mexico, and again further north in Wyoming, is so hard to come by, that hikers often have to drink water from these "cattle tanks" and "cow ponds". Tanks are better than ponds, and some are fed by a well through a pipe that is pressurized by a windmill or solar powered pump, but animals can still drink (and slobber) from them. Also the water supports vegetative growths and algae, so a microscopic filter is used to make this water potable. The water from "cow ponds" is different though, because it is likely to be contaminated by animal urine and feces, and may also have exposure to alkalinity, fertilizers, pesticides, or heavy metals, if close to farming or mining operations. Normally you don't have to worry about the latter contaminants, but e-coli is almost guaranteed for the former. For this "cow pond" water you also have to worry about silt from the pond clogging up your filter, plus whatever taste or odor the filtered water may give off. So, for the worst water, the order of steps is: 1) prefilter with a bandana into dirty water bag 2) add correct amount of bleach, chlorine, or other chemical purifier to dirty water bag 3) filter into clean water containers 4) add flavouring to improve taste for consumption (koolaid, crystal lite, powdered drink mixes). For the pollutants caused by farm and mining runoff, specialized filter pumps designed for these would be required, but are generally too big and heavy for thru-hikers to carry....

@@johnwilson6954 Yep! Great explanation. We suggest following similar practices on water collected from, near, or below ski slopes because special salts are used on many slopes to consolidate and hold snow for longer seasons and those salts contain chemicals that are not good for mammals, especially humans.

@@memathews - I typically like to wait for Sara (or whoever's channel it may be) to provide an answer to the poster (in this case it is Gayle), but she seems to be in a dead zone on the CDT, and has not yet been able to reply to questions on these videos, or Instagram (4 days now), so I thought I should be of help. Plus, I woke up from my nap and had the inclination and time to spare...😎🤣
@memathews
@memathews 5 лет назад
@@johnwilson6954 Hey, any time we wake up from a nap is a good time these days! Ha-ha!! Sara has mentioned she likes some banter between commenters, not to the point of fights or anything. Everyone has an idea of how to handle water and you're giving your opinion. One thing I do know: drinking water that's unbelievable gross is better than quite literally dying of thirst. We can generally fix most problems we acquire through water that other mammals are drinking.
@johnwilson6954
@johnwilson6954 5 лет назад
@@memathews - I agree. I have to say that I feel most "at home" commenting on this channel, because Sara's subscribers are quite loyal and seem to almost be like distant "cousins", as you always see the same names.... From what I can tell, the worst part of having to drink the "cow pond" water, is if it smells real bad or is too warm. The flavourings can mask the taste aspect somewhat, but if it smells bad there is no disguising that. Plus, when it's hot and your real thirsty, warm "cow water" - filtered or not - can't be too satisfying....
