Day 7: Into Silver City / CDT Thru-hike 2024

I intend to hike the Continental Divide Trail (CDT) in 2024 and will vlog my experience. Follow me under "Old Man and the CDT."
I am Mike Current, 61-years-old, and retired military. I served for over 30 years in the US Army.
After retirement, I opened two small businesses. But after a few years, I sold both businesses because they were taking time away from pursuing personal goals, like hiking and sailing.
I hiked the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) in 2020 and Appalachian Trail (AT) in 2022. I vlogged (video journaled) my experiences under "Old Man and the PCT" and "Old Man and the AT", respectively.
I sailed around the Chesapeake Bay in my Tayana 37 sailboat over the summer of 2023 and vlogged the experience under the RU-vid channel "Old Man and the Sea."

I’m have watched ALL of your videos from your first steps on the PCT. I usually don’t comment but I just wanted you to know how inspiring you are and your approach and commitment to hiking and LIFE. Thank you. I’ve had 7 surgeries since March of 2019 and the videos have kept me going. Thank you more than you know!!!! I did a hiker challenge last year of 365 miles and this year a thru hike of the Sheltowee Trace backpacking one weekend a month at a time and will finish in November 353 miles and will double my miles from last year. ❤️ 🥾

Is that earphones you have on. Do you listen to books and music or are they hearing aids? Great job on your videos! What app to you use for your videos?

They are Aftershoks. They work through bone conduction. I use them primarily for editing videos at night when people are camping close by.

Can't wait to do this myself. Years ago I applied for the police department in Silver City - I was quite willing to move out to small-town New Mexico for it. Life gave me bigger and better things but... I think I'd have been pretty happy there.

Good morning, Mike. Am really enjoying your videos. Do road walks bother you as I hear a lot of thru hikers complaining about them? Do you watch the scenery on the side of the road, think, plan, or just daydream along? Just curious. You're doing great. That Mexican food looked delicious. I like combo plates. Been on that road, downhill, on our bikes from Florida to Washington State in 2016! Would the Airbnb's other clientele be bikers on the Great Duvide Mountain Bike route? Great to start my days with your videos.

Good Morning Mike. Enjoying your videos. Are you alone most the time or are you walking with other hikers? I kie the way you keep the video moving, and always pick the right scenes to capture. I Love Silver City. Good friends lived there for over 20 years... I always thought of it as the gateway to Gila. Grant county has a lot to offer, but alas you will be hiking through the less scenic part. Thank you again for taking us along on your journey.

😂🤮, I love cinnamon, but that stuff is awful. Fire Shine, is much smoother and has better flavor...

@@anitasimmons3599 Well, apparently someone that lives in or near Silver City doesn't agree with you. 😁When I did that road walk back in 2021, the side of the road was littered with the bottles the entire length into town. Hopefully, it's been cleaned up since.

@@daviddejong2756 sadly, those bottles were likely drank by an alcoholic on their way home from work... They toss the evidence as soon as it is empty. Most Backpackers will not carry glass and if they carry liquor it gets transferred into plastic or aluminum flask.
