CUNY TV's restoring of the classic public television program, "Day at Night", which aired from 1973-1974. In this episode, host James Day talks with comedian, conductor and pianist Victor Borge about the serious nature of comedy and his start in America after fleeing from Nazis in his native Denmark.
CUNY TV is proud to re-broadcast newly digitized episodes of DAY AT NIGHT, the popular public television series hosted by the late James Day. Day was a true pioneer of public television: co-founder of KQED in San Francisco, president of WNET upon the merger of National Educational Television (NET) and television station WNDT/Channel 13, and most recently, Chairman of the CUNY TV Advisory Board. The series features fascinating interviews with notable cultural and political figures conducted in the mid 1970's. (Taped: 12/5/73)

Victor Borge I am sad I knew you some time ago only. I love all your performances. I wish you were still here. You are unique. And I disagree that some pianists try to imitate you. Your are untouchable and will remain respected .Thank you for everything you presented.

Thank you so much for making this video available. It gives insight into the person we all knew Victor Borge to be, a great and humble man. I thought his comment that he 'forgives easily' is so needed in todays world. I never got to see him live but often enjoy watching his videos and humour here on RU-vid. Thankfully his humour lives on and he lives on in our hearts.

I just can't get enough of this guy. I was even laughing with the audience in Denmark, even though I didn't understand a word! There's something about him which transcends language itself, and I think it's to do with the connection between humour and human ... It can't be pure coincidence that they both start with a hum ... Hmmmm...

Excellent testimony. How he treats humor so seriously is insightfully counterintuitive that every success takes hard work no matter how simple or ridiculous it looks on the outside

Borge is so right. I cannot play violin in an orchestra without making jokes. If I didn't I would be so stressed out that I would freak out. I'm glad to see my thoughts shared with such an amazing musician.

Thank you for posting this video. There are lots of videos on youtube, that show Mr. Borge performing on stage, but this is the only one I found so far, that offers some background information and shows, what is behind all this.

I saw him in German TV in the age of 18. I was laughing and laughing. So I am very happy, I can see all this today in RU-vid with a better English knowledge. Unfortunately, Young people don't know Mr. Borge. So we have to tell them. I always try to teach my collegues the phonetic punctuation. Still fail!

I recall the first belly laugh I ever had reading...it was in the public library and I think the piece was from Perelman's "Like A Fox" (also known as "Don't Tread On Me") ...the piece was about a boy who was going off to Hollywood to write for the pictures..."He was being sent of by jubilant relatives who now realized they would have to go back to work." I am paraphrasing, so forgive any error of memory. I used to have all of his books, painstakingly culled from yard sale barons who greedily sold Perelman 1st editions for .75 cents...bounders. My irreplaceable collection was destroyed by a step-mother who hated my guts. Well, she is in her box now, hopefully ringing a bell, screaming she has nothing to read. Would sure like to see more film of SJP, tragically now, nearly a forgotten man.
