Hi Bus Driver Life! I've made it to the next step in the recruitment process for being a bus driver and I've been watching many bus driver videos to get some different perspectives. In Australia, our public buses are much better equipped with metal cages/shields for safety as standard, so there's a plus. I'm feeling a bit intimidated being a woman in this industry, but due to COVID-19 and the area I live, my career paths are much more limited. I don't mind working in a male dominated industry. I've done it before and prefer it, as men are generally no-nonsense. I just gotta do everything in my power to keep safe out there on the road. It seems to be decent pay and better than working fast food and retail, which basically have the worst of society coming in there as well. I've had drinks thrown on me, sauce and pickles thrown, cleaning vomit, pee and diarrhoea off the floor, grown men drunk fighting in the middle of a restaurant with blood splattering everywhere, dealing with incompetent management and head office constantly, rude and entitled customers who think they know more than you... etc etc. I think this is a better fit for me, as I'm very good at dealing with situations on my own and I'm very self-reliant. I've done management before. I like the idea of no boss breathing down my neck like at retail or office jobs, and you can be more firm with customers in a role like this under the guise of "safety". I like helping people a lot, so making sure those old folks are safe would make me happy. I enjoy driving, I hate being bored and I love being out and not in one place all the time. It's nice to see what's new and what's happening in the city, and getting paid to do it. Thank you for your honesty! 😊

Thanks Keywan for illustrating our profession. Change over usually takes company's car to relief another driver of theirs shift. Passenger loading especially senior citizens and less mobile passengers requires extra cares, whose cares about being late, just radio to operational center informed of passenger loading. You rather be safe being late than sorry of rushing catch up with the time.

Passengers sitting in during a layover may be waiting as the route becomes another route (in some cities), the bus is at a layover between its terminus points, or they missed their stop and have to go all the route to the final destination then come back, or maybe a enthusiastic person who never tried the route before.

I so enjoyed your presentation on bus uprising. Several years ago I lived in Colorado and operated 30 and 40. Foot Gillig Phantom buses at Stapleton International Airport. I started out never driving anything bigger than the Pinto but quickly became a driving trainer. I got my golden job working driving what was called lot four which is the aircraft operational area. I drove where No Cars Go, it's where the baggage tugs. The fueling trucks the lav trucks etc. It's all the places people aren't allowed to go. I drove 5 on 2 off. I always felt safe thete but there was a couple of close calls, one with a 757 that came out of the blind-spot that was behind the Continental hanger. But other than that, it was a wonderful job, and like all jobs It was one guy. He always had the messed up part rotation. I'd go back to it in a minute. Except later down Stapleton International and built Denver International halfway to Kansas. Meanwhile I am in. Los Angeles trying to figure out what to do with my life.

Seriously? You made this all look way too easy. I know each company, city, area is different and time of day makes a huge difference in how difficult or easy the route is. Maybe you have the route and schedule that picks up all of the school kids and you are 10-16 with all of the little darlings and you can't even get into the bus stop because of traffic (parents taking their little darlings to school) so by the time you drop off you pull out 5-10 minutes down and still have the rest of traffic to deal with getting back to the transit center where "on paper" you have 3-5 minutes of "recovery" time and the supervisors are out there making sure you load and leave on time but you needed a 10-100 in a spot where there are only two rest rooms and 15 other drivers trying to do the same thing...LOL! Buddy, you talk about 22 minutes of "break" time or 15 minutes of "break" time....try a place that has an outside source do the timings and they give you 7 minutes to do 5 MPH in a transit center (which takes at least 5 minutes from entry to exit) with 6 stop signs in it before you even reach the street and 10 traffic signals to your next time point where you already find yourself 5-6 minutes down then you get multiple passengers with "mobility" devices and are carrying all of their "worldly possessions" strapped on them and each one takes about 5 minutes to secure in place while reaching around all of their stinky back packs, duffel bags, etc. and the rest of your now full bus wants to know if you will make connections and never mind the fact your route has road work being done but every passenger gets on digging for bus fare or pass...or how abut the person paying their $2.50 fare all in small change that they try to jam into the fare box and get it jammed up...or better yet the rolled up/wadded up dollar bills they can't get in to the fare box so the machine keeps rejecting them. Don't forget you better be calling out all of your time points and major streets while answering questions plus watching the shady dude in he back seat that thinks he is going to be riding around to stay warm or sleep on the bus. Make sure you watch for the passengers that want to pop out from behind a pole or tree or whatever in the dark and you are supposed to see them in time to stop smoothly so no one gets jostled. Or maybe you work for one of those companies that believe you are supposed to "give" 3 minutes you don't have for other routes running late so their passengers can drag their slow butts to your bus and you are now pulling out 5-6-7-8 minutes late and you are supposed to call that in to a dispatch that may not answer your RTT for 15-20 minutes if at all. How about a route that makes a trip every 30 minutes with 5 minutes of recovery time but may have 6 "mobility" device boardings in one trip or groups that take out numerous special needs passengers that take 5 minutes to load....yea buddy. I could go on and on and on....and at the end of your shift you gt called in by a supervisor for a passenger report from 10 days before and you are supposed o be able to defend your actions...good luck remembering! They must justify their jobs by throwing the disciplinary code at you and God forbid you get sick from the sick passenger(s) that coughed all over you. 10-7 after 38 years of this sh*t!

Kathleen Oliver Trust me..I have had tough days/weeks/months like what you have described above. However..this was a vlog of what actually happened that day. I’m sorry it wasn’t bad enough for you. I plan to do more vlogs of my day but of course I can’t really show anything while I’m actually in service.

@@BusDriverLife I am not asking for you have worse days...you will no matter what. I also realize you cannot produce video while in service...but I bet their "eye-in-your-face" cameras with audio will...don't sneeze or pick your nose and God forbid you talk to yourself as I used to do a lot! Cameras are only out their to hang the driver not save him/her. I stumbled across your video by accident and it brought back memories of the horror stories I knew first hand or worse, what happened to other drivers...like the driver on break in his bus hit in the neck by a shot gun pellet because of some Adam Henries in the transit center having a bad day....how do you miss with a shot gun and hit someone in a bus? Stay safe and help educate everyone to the dangers of bus driving.

Valley Metro just installed cab barriers for the drivers after COVID . I am so glad that they did that. A lot of people don’t know how draaaaaaaaining driving is. Even your own car! These videos really open us passengers up to the driver’s side of things.

Thumbnail caught my attention. I love the old RTS style buses. We used to have almost 60, but they’re unfortunately being replaced by low floor Gilligs. I miss the sweet sound of the Detroit 50 series engines. Nice video!

Does your transit company have maintenance log books where you inspect the bus before pulling out? Each reliver also signs letting maintenance crew needs repairs or not

Usually were not supposed to use our phones while on the bus at all. Supposed to be completely off the bus when using the phone. Did you get permission to use your phone on the bus since your vlogging?
@BusDriverLife
@BusDriverLife 3 года назад
Those are not the rules where I drive. Our phones are to be shut down and stowed at all times while in service. We are allowed to use our phones on or off the bus during breaks/recovery time. If there is ever any footage of me while driving..someone else would be filming from outside of the drivers area. Also questions like this calling me out publicly are always kind of interesting.

@@BusDriverLife Thank you My humble brother and King of Kings for your speedy response. I appreciate it so much. Actually to be honest, this was so unexpected. But to say this is to say I wasn't trying to call you out publicly. To be honest. I'm just starting this on My career as we speak Myself. I thought about doing this exact same thing that you are doing. It came as an idea ,but then we are told rule of thumb we are not allowed to have our phones period. Only basically during any breaks but it must be of the bus. Not on at all or vibrate. If we are caught utilizing our phones on the bus at all its a done deal. I admire what you are doing and your doing a great job from what I see. I have kids so yes you are correct though, they are stowed away at all times while driving. Being I have kids though I will check off.the bus at break time if any missed important calls. Again appreciate the heads head and have a great weekend. Enjoy your evening King!

yea people get upset. It is because people rely on the bus to get to work. If the bus comes 10 minutes early or doesn't stop or is late you can get fired! Many employers could care less if its the buses fault.
@BusDriverLife
@BusDriverLife 3 года назад
Yup..I totally understand why people get upset..I’m just trying to get those same people to understand why it happens. It’s normally NOT the bus drivers fault..so we do not deserve to be yelled at..disrespected..or assaulted because of it. I definitely appreciate you watching!
@0zfer
@0zfer 2 года назад
@Paul Smith it doesn't work like that. The bus already comes at inconvient times and doesnt alayas have another one and it sucks to have to wait 30 mins to an hour before and after work. You are asking people to guess or go an extra hour early every day wastes people's time. Normally people go on the bus for an hour for a route that would already only take 20 mins by car. 2 hours each way for a 20 minute drive is insane. Then the companies make you wait in a security line unpaid an extra hour for this next to minimum wage job.
@0zfer
@0zfer 2 года назад
@Paul Smith as somone who has ridden a bus for years to get to work and been blamed numerous times for being late at the fault of the bus I can tell you there have been times it came 10 minutes early
