Join me for a day in the life of a doctor! This time I'll be showing you what it's like on the CTU, the clinical teaching unit. We work in teams made up of medical students, residents, fellows and staff physicians. It's a full day of seeing patients, attending teaching sessions and seeing friends!

Anytime I'm at my doctor's or having a test done and they ask if a student can be in the room, I always allow them. It's their way of learning(similar to when I did my student teaching) and my case with gastropraesis and other motility disorders is a tough one and this gives them great experience learning how best to treat me and/or handle my condition. So, awesome you're going to be a doctor, I wish you all the best of luck!

Yes! I do the same thing! The supervising doctor always ask so timidly too which concerns me to think that it means many people say “no.” They need to learn and get their bearings and they can’t do that without patients to work with. Some folks lack of insight can be so frustrating.

I enjoy your videos so much. I have worked on a CTU unit for 25 yrs and still learn something new almost every shift. I love that you included talking to the nurse as part of you day. Sadly many doctors don't include this in part of their day.

Haha this might be a weird question but whenever you’re asleep are you worried you won’t hear the pager? I’ve always wondered what would happen if a resident was a heavy sleeper and they didn’t hear their pager! Love your videos 💓☺️

I'm not her but as part of a medical team I usually try to nap at a very uncomfortable position, like sitting down or having 3 pillows on my head, so I could be easily waken up by slight noises. Basically, I'm just immobilizing my body and have some "rest."

Whenever we are "sleeping" during our shifts, we are actually in between the state of being awake and asleep. So basically any small noise will wake us up easily!

2 yrs late, but I’m amazed at how different residency is at another country. Where I’m training as a 1st yr resident, I have 20 patients to myself during office hours (7am to 4pm) then during the hand over until 7am the next day, I have 2 floors all to myself after which I am back to my usual 20 patients until 4pm until I hand it over to another resident for the next 15hrs. I never experienced talking with my seniors or a hospitalist regarding our plans for patient care. I always end up calling the attending if I need to do something for their patient which is kind of a hassle especially for late night issues.

Our inpatient hours are horrible! 5-7 for long call and 5-4 on short call. 6 days a week, no call ... so I guess the no call part of it is good 😑

Steve Davis attendings usually come at 7 and off at 5ish. But they’re always staying later doing paperwork. I think the biggest difference is that they have 7 days in and 7 days off. While as residents we work the whole month

I’ve given permission a few times for students/residents to talk about an ill kid in the hospital, and been happy to be part of the learning process for doctors in training myself, too, a few times. Makes sense, it is in everyone’s best interest to have well-trained doctors!

Watching your videos makes me want to be a registered nurse even though I was thinking to apply to respiratory therapist program. I like how the physician thinks so I prefer Nursing. I need to study for the entrance exam and I haven’t started.

I am a pharmacy student in BC and pharmacists here are definitely not considered allied health professionals, they are seen as a more intrinsic part of the healthcare team/system. Interesting how different roles are perceived in each province!!

Lexi Despaux PA and NP work under the MD. To be a NP you have to get a RN first. PA requirments are based off the school

Guy Archibald DO is essentially the same as MD in the sense that you’re a medical doctor. Different philosophies and slightly different training but both are physicians

Some schools have an accelerated 5 year PA program which is direct entry. If you're curious check out King's College in Pennsylvania!

Possibly the hospital I'm always admitted to because of my GI issues but I'm not 100% sure. The hospital has a new side and an old side and fortunately, I'm always on the new side. The clips you showed look like the old side. However, a lot of hospitals look the same. It would be so cool to bump into you!

Relax, personally, I don't mind a bit of an inferiority complex on a girl(... it's not gonna suck itself, you know!) although it does kill the hope for any serious relationship. Here's a free medical opinion: don't get too worked up over comments on the internet. Have the nurse help you with the paperwork.

I am curious. I just graduated with a music interdisciplinary studies degree and have grown very interested in the medical field. I plan on going into teaching (went through the entire music ed program except for student teaching) because that was my plan before I became ill. I deal with multiple chronic illnesses but am on the steady and/or upslope to having everything managed. Are there doctors who still work and have chronic illnesses themselves? If so then what is some advice for someone who has chronic illnesses, but is interested in the medical field?

I'd love to have this nice medicine students' educational programme in my country - because our students start work at hospitals from 3rd year at school, I think. (It's based on medicine students' community opinion.) This looks very interesting and helpful.
