Hello friends, in this video join me on my working days in Brisbane as a surgical resident! The nomenclature out here is a little confusing but basically I"m not on a surgical training programme but a junior doctor (A "senior house officer", 3-years post graduation) on the surgical team. Enjoy!😊

A surgical resident in Brisbane!!! Hopefully, maybe one day in the next decade or so that will be me 😀. It’s awesome to find someone who is actually doing the thing I want to do in the country I live/probably will study in. This is the first video of yours that I’ve seen, I’m just intrigued ☺️.

A very close friend of mine had a major stroke which he shouldn’t have survived. After two weeks on the general ward he’s got his own room in rehabilitation in STARS. This facility is amazing and has made a huge difference to his recovery. He has a long road ahead, but he’s got great care. Glad you’re enjoying your time here

As a former RN I enjoy the excitement you feel when learning or performing something new.. Brisbane is a lovely city but I didn’t know that particular hospital existed. It has amazing dining areas and does look like a hotel. Enjoy your stay and learn lots.🌺🇦🇺

So interesting. Would have loved being a dr but had to settle for a registered nurse which was also a very much loved profession for me. 57 years later I'm still at it and learn something new everyday .Wishing you much enjoyment and success from Cairns

I used to live in South Bank, might've even been the same building 😄. Seeing that lovely cityscape across the pedestrian bridge certainly brought on some nostalgia. Looking forward to coming back to the Royal next year.

Quite a few of the hospitals in brisbane are quite nice, The childrens hospital is honestly amazing, and Princess alexander has a fairly nice entrance lobby. Although the marter is kinda dated and average. But marter private is nice.

You are probably the perfect person to answer my question. I’m not a medical student but I’m writing a book about one. I was hoping you might be able to please explain to me what a person who intends to be a surgeon is likely to be doing at age 25 assuming they began the process straight out of high school? What stage of their career and if they’d likely be financially independent by that time. Appreciate the help!

Within the UK - they'll probably be about to start surgical training and yes will be financially independent as will have been working for 1-2 years by then. (You graduate from medical school at 23/24 and then start working in different rotations for 2 years before specialising)

It’s nice to have someone explain someone the difference between parathyroids and the thyroid, I at the young age of 25 needed one off my parathyroids removed and people are like oh do you need medications now I’m like no I had hyperparathyroidism it’s different!

I would love to go to the University of Melbourne and do an exchange year to Oxford Uni. I'm wanting to study either medicine or engineering. I live close to Brisbane and when I was younger I was in an accident which resulted me in being admitted to Lady Cilento Children's Hospital (now QCH). If I study medicine I would love to work there, it's an amazing hospital 🥰

My Dad's a breast and endocrine surgeon in Sydney and honestly I'm shocked at how nice the hospital is, it's definitely not as nice in NSW.

Thanks! I’m not an IMG in the UK so I’m not too sure about that. All information about applying to CST generally is online and in my other videos but not sure about IMG specifically 😊

Hello! I'm not too sure as I am not on a training programme here but to get on to the surgical training programme here you need to pass a surgical exam (GSSE) before you can apply.

Hi Surina. Your videos are very inspiring & I just subscribed to your channel. I am an IMG chasing an MCh in Surgery (Otorhinolaryngology) at CCCU in September 2022 and also prepping for the PLAB 1 & 2 in 2023. I am also considering writing the MRCS (ENT) in January 2024 upon completing my MCh program. Armed with all these credentials, what are my chances of getting into specialty training (with the ultimate aim of becoming a consultant) in UK and Australia. Which country is better in terms of salaries, work-life balance, personal & professional development etc. Someone advised that armed with all the afore-mentioned credentials, i should chase unaccredited jobs in ENT, then write GSSE and then apply for SET...what's your sincere advise?

I agree with that advice! Aus better for pay and training I think. Work-life balance is down to you, although officially less hours in the working week here the overtime you rack up ends up being equivalent or more to hours worked in the NHS, you just get paid a lot better for it in Aus.

No MRCS is not valid in australia they have their own exams for surgery!

Hi I am currently working as a sho in trauma and orthopedic in nhs. There is a myth that surgery job is not available in Australia or they don't welcome img from uk. Is that true Tnx

There is a lot of competition from Aus docs alone and it requires having a lot of consultant support from within the Aus healthcare system. As it will take a while to establish that as an IMG it might be harder to get on to the training programme than it is in the NHS.

Start with non training jobs, do for a few years to build CV and get consultant references and then apply! Pretty competitive but depends on your references and how well you interview. You also need permanent residency to apply for training programmes. Cities are much more competitive than rural areas.
