I am an archaeologist and you should know, that about the only way you can make a living at in archaeology is to get a Doctorate and teach at a university. Then during the summers you can work at your favorite dig site. There is also rescue archaeology. These companies go into an arch site and rescue as many of the artifacts as they can before an oil or coal company or some infrastruture project comes in a destroys a site.

A day in the life of an archaeologist is probably not at a site, but on the couch, for the fifth week, searching for the next underpaid (30K salary, if that) gig abroad. When you do get that gig, i've read that much of the time sites are uninteresting. It sounds exhausting for very little return. 30K is not enough money to support yourself, your hobbies, your exploration or a family. And to me, the whole arrangement is not worth the thrill of discovery, which might happen.. on occasion. Furthermore, I think it needs to be stressed that the job is field work. It's not research, or "history, sociology and geography". The job entails digging and recovering artifacts, or sometimes nothing. Excavations are funded on contract and always temporary, so there will always be incredible instability that doesn't sound very fun or healthy. And it's not an adventure, there's no quest to merit it, it's just labour! When looking for a career, it's better to consider what the every day life looks like, and then determine from there how that works for you. Education is education and professing is professing. There's unfortunately not much else in the realm of these subjects to do as a profession, unless you manage to score something very niche. Archaeologists are the ones who do specialized labour for the people fortunate enough to have specialized positions in analysis. These analysts probably get paid much more. If you're a seeker and fascinated with this stuff, there's no reason you can't study it on your own and visit ancient monuments on your vacations. I looked into it myself but the job itself is not what I'd hoped. Maybe it was a better job in the 20s or late 19th century . In the past, think in all cases you would have had to have been linked to the upper middle class and associated with a university. Provided that, you'd have the security net of your Lara Croft mansion to cover any intellectual pursuit you wanted. What a privilege! I believe most of the good positions related to ancient civilizations nowadays are in education...Or in movies/recreation. Those are very limited, like a few per institution, and always taken. =/. In my opinion it seems like a very poor thing to risk your future on. This is a guy coming from the music industry, and we all know how that's working out for the majority of artists. I don't want to bank my life on another fat chance. That's why I'm doing my best to get honest intel about these professions - it's really important. All the best on your career search!

@Asya Gurz Check on your university websites what the requirements they ask for. If they want you to study specific subjects in high school, then study those subjects. Otherwise, you can come into the archaeology field at the postgraduate level. For example, students from subjects such as chemistry, geography, biology, zoology, and geology start studying archaeology for Masters degrees. But if you want to be the kind of person who does the digging, you have to study archaeology for your Bachelor's degree.
