JOE FPOC, and literally almost every vehicle I've seen come from an independent has been hacked together, misdiagnosed, or not fixed properly. Are we really going to go down this road? The Chevrolet truck engine oil filters are almost impossible to tighten or loosen by hand because of the design that of the oil pan.

My first car I learned so much just working on it and yes it’s rewarding to fix something with your hands and get the car running again. When you have the whole engine apart and then put it all back together and the first turn of the key and it starts is hella rewarding. All this long hours those tough nights to get to that point where it turns over and runs even better then before is such a great conference boost.

Hand tight only on the oil filter. The wrench is not needed to get it tight enough. Make sure the old seal comes off with the old filter. Some guys use that wrench and crush the new seal and it will start leaking.

The day I quit being an auto mechanic was the best day of my life. No more working flat rate. No more hot, summer shops. No more "grease monkey" label. I use my mechanical skills to work on robotics and automation now and get paid a real wage. Dealerships and the publics opinion of mechanics is what's driving the shortages. Not to mention the awful wages, benefits and amount of money wasted on tools you'll never be able to pay back. Glad I kept this as a hobby only.

I was a certified ASE tech. I was a level B tech and worked on driveability problems along with everything else that came in. Diagnosis on the rate only pays 1 hr, so if it takes you longer you're paying to fix that car out of your own pocket. Once they sell the customer on the repair you recommend you start getting paid again. You MIGHT make money but usually you end up even or below.

Wow! So first, you have to find the vehicle on the lot, put it on the lift properly (Don't blow a tire - they tend to not like that), set up the lift in the correct spots, reset the oil life monitor, put an updated oil sticker on the window. Check wipers, lights, horn and e-brake. Then, go to computer and log onto the job. Open hood: Check belts, hoses, filters (which are not easy to get to these days), fluid levels, etc. Then, lift up: Drain oil and try to remove filter (because Hercules put it on). Go to parts department - Wait till they get done doing what they're doing: Give them your RO and get the parts.Come back and install the filter. Check all suspension, tires, cooler lines and pipes, check all components for leaks. Then pull wheels, check brakes, rotate tires. Write down all the specs in the multi-point program. Lower vehicle. Fill with oil. Then, go to the computer and write your story for the work you've done and if you found anything, go to parts: Wait your turn again: Get prices and then go back to your computer and get labor times: Give to your service writer who is too busy to talk to you. Wait till he comes out and says "They declined the work you recommended". Then you relearn the tire sensors, punch off the RO. Finnish the multi-point indicating that the customer declined the work. Then, double check the drain plug (because you forgot if you tightened it). Pull the vehicle out an start the next job.Collect your 0.4 of an hour pay for the 1.0 hour you just spent on the job. Piece of cake! I freekin love my job -

Left unsaid is the issue of pay. Many dealers pay .1 hours for an oil change. That's a measly 6 minutes. Carry that scenario on out to most other repairs; especially repairs under warranty.

A JOB in this field requires a lot. And one mishap icould cost the customer and the shop a ton in so many ways. And those guys working on our car...make very little compaired to most trades when it cost so much to stay in it.... toolz are so expensive... and forever. So... hard to stay loyal to the customer. I mean the logical place for the technical person that has to be for the customers but they say fuck you about the prices it cost f9r their private privileges to drive their vehicle they bought. Most Technicians have as much money in tools to work on your piece of shit than in their home and cars combined. But the prices for a good Auto Technician don't increase. Most don't have any benifits amd retirement ... yeah.... wtfe. His toolbill out of his pocket and will never stop. His training.... will never be enough od ever stop. These cars are increasingly built more and more cheaply shile they become more nd more difcicult to diagnose and the public more ignorant of what they are paying for....to prolong the combustion engine. Enjoy that turbo.... gonna get your money's worth from that stuff like they they did in the 80's... works great... when it works. That last part.... "I think you would make a great Technician".... BLAHAHHAHAGA.... guy doesnt know how to chamge oil... didnt know what is the frame... .but didn't he say he took some sort of schooling? "Snoozing"

GM is too easy to fix. In my experience it's just cheap Aluminum Engines easy to fix. If you want a real challenge then Fords Triton Motor would be the perfect obstacle. The Triton Motor is very powerful Engine more powerful then Vortec depending on the liter size. GM just thinks the bigger the liter size the better the outcome on a pushrod. Ford matched GM 8.1L V8 gasoline fueled with a powerful 6.8L V10 gasoline fueled. When it comes to Diesel alternatives Ford takes the Lead.
