Not judging, just jealous. We have had only 9 inches since July of 2021. We bought a small ranch in Central Texas and moved up here from Austin in January. It’s rained 2.5 inches since we moved up here. We did buy a young filly, but we’re feeding her grain and hay, as there is no grass.

I have three retired Tennessee walkers, my gelding is extremely skinny has always been skinny and his mother was skinny, will your fermented hey help him put on weight? As they aren't doing much more than hanging out in the pasture, I'm wondering about what I'm feeding them. They get 12% pellets but I saw you putting water in your buckets and salt and I would like to do this with this be something I could do without worrying plus I'm going to buy some of your hay silage and give them that too but first I want to hear back from you
@freespiritequestrian
@freespiritequestrian 2 года назад
Sounds more like they need their teeth done and they could have ulcers. I would say it’s more along those lines. The fermented alfalfa is great for weight gain and also Triple Crown Senior along with an oil supplement would help too.

i LOVE your videos but why are we dumping all the table salt in? Do they not have salt blocks? Maybe use Apple A Day electrolytes instead? I use this for the Texas heat and winters. that is a LOT of salt going in the feed. I know it makes them drink water so let me know. thank you always willing to learn.
@freespiritequestrian
@freespiritequestrian 2 года назад
They have 24/7 access to salt blocks and mineral blocks. Horses can not replenish salt as easily as we can, they lose up to 30% during exercise, and even more so in humidity. Feeding salt has also prevented colic on numerous occasions. And NO Apple A Day electrolytes are VERY harsh on the GI system, I would never feed that daily. I actually wouldn’t ever feed that brand of electrolytes. I ride endurance and we are very picky about our salt and electrolytes. Not feeding salt is actually scary, and I’m surprised people don’t, so many studies talk about adding salt to equine diets…

I love how kind and gentle you are to your students. I wish I had would’ve had a trainer like that when I went on my summer camp. I got a young girl all she would talk about was the things she wanted to do with this guy and how he was so attractive. I honestly was very annoyed by it and little weirded out. She put me on her horse who seemed to not be well trained, since when I pulled on the reins like she told me to do she barely stopped and she tried to eat grass I tried to pull her away and she was probably the most stubborn horse, but the trainer instead blamed me to be a bad rider and that I shouldn’t ride horses. I honestly was just so overwhelmed and was the one of the worst experiences I had, let alone how all the other girls there were very rude and didn’t even bother to talk to me. I really do like horses I do, but when I experience something like this but I hope to get a trainer as sweet as you in the future if I ever want to ride again

Wondering if you think about how much salt you're actually giving them. Wouldn't a salt block be better out where they forage so they can get to it as they feel they need it? Looks like you're putting way too much in there for that size bucket. Just curious...or are salt requirements different since you're in Michigan?
@freespiritequestrian
@freespiritequestrian 2 года назад
Hi Rachel, They have a salt and mineral block as well. Horses are 1000-1300 pound animals, and the amount I’m giving them is appropriate. They need salt intake daily and more when they are exercised. All of mine are worked 3-5x per week and it’s very humid in Michigan hence why more salt is given due to more sweating and sodium loss. Horses cannot replace their salt intake like we can, and by giving them loose salt in their feed it helps to replenish their system. It has also prevented colic on many occasions.

You really brought me back to my lesson days. That little girl was so brave & she did great. When I was 4 we went to an amusement park that had horses. That's all I wanted to do all day. At that age they led you around & only let you walk. Well for my last ride I convinced the attendant to let me go around by myself. I was tired of walking so I gave my horse a little kick & got it into a trot. Lol everybody was a little stunned & my mom a little scared. I loved it.
