Out for the day with some traditional gear. I pitched a low peak holden tent, built a fire for some tea. And just relaxed, let's hope this is the last of the snow. / lonewoodsman / thereal_lone_woodsman
Hey thanks man. I'm working on editing a couple right now as a matter of fact. One of them is like no other video I've ever done. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
Nice outing. But - 3 comments: That tarp setup was very inefficient, a lot of tarp laying flat on the ground for barely enough room to sit up in it. That kneeling pad is a good idea - Mike at Bushcraft Bartons has a friend who makes one like that with a canvas bottom, insulating filler and wool top, rolls up just fine, too. If I wasn't allergic to wool, I would get one and one of those Spanish wool blankets, too! And with all that snow, why waste your drinking water (heavy to carry in) to put the fire out? Just kick some snow on it. Loved your use of 'traditional' kit! That was IT back when I started out! Keep your boot bottoms dirty! Jerry
I must respectfully disagree in regards to the tarp setup being inefficient. This setup in these conditions is highly effective and efficient. The tarp laying on the ground is called a ground cloth, which provides protection from the wet snow underneath. And the low peaked pitch while it doesn't provide a ton of headroom. It does keep out the wind and weather much more effectively than a high peak that provides headroom. Not to mention it holds the heat of a fire much closer to the body. As to why I carry in water, well that's pretty simple. I'm lazy (haha) melting snow is a long slow process. I must say I feel sorry for you being allergic to wool, I love all my wool gear. Thanks for watching, take care my friend.
