Day Trip to Port Arthur ⛴ (FULL EPISODE) S11 E6

This is a day trip in my neck of the woods, the Southeastern border of Texas. It's a gumbo pot of cultures sitting right on the edge of Texas & Louisiana. It may be out of the way, but it's the only way to go for a melting pot of experiences.
The museum in this old bank building covers the town’s history from Jurassic to Janis Joplin. It’s a life-sized textbook, and it’s even got an awesome replica of Janis’s psychedelic Porsche!
This is the site of one of the most significant Civil War battles in Texas, where in 1863, Lt. Dick Dowling and his men fought back an army of Union soldiers 100 times its size at Fort Griffin, preventing Union forces from invading Texas during the war.
This place is just about as Cajun as they come…and you know what that means: BOUDAIN (sausage stuffed with dirty rice). And you can get in just about every form: fried, links, quesadillas, omelets and sandwiches! It’s a truly Southeast Texas experience.
If it swims, they have it. Since 1947, they’ve been serving up all sorts of seafood and Cajun flavors, and everything is made in house. BUT when you visit, you have to get the Sabine Pass Delicacy of barbecue crabs. And don’t be expecting any smoked flavor, these bad boys are all deep fried and all delicious.
Sea Rim is 4000 acres of marshland and 5 miles of beachfront, and it’s one of Texas’s most remote state parks. It’s a beautiful spot of land to slow down and enjoy the coast, or you can do one of my favorite childhood activities: crabbing.

Janis Joplin was my babysitter when she was in high school. Her family were patients of my dad, Dr. James (Jim) Thomas. We lived in Griffing Park, a few blocks from the Joplins

@TheDaytripper, Thank you for this piece. I am born and raised in Port Arthur, Texas and except for my time in college and my time in the military as Army Artillery Officer, I have spent my entire time here and am 'Proud' to say this is my hometown!

Aw Chet, this is one of my favs to watch since I grew up in Port Arthur and Groves...PNG grad in 73. Mom used to take us crabbing right next to the crazy Bridge City bridge. Hated driving over it in driver's ed. :) Last time I was there was after my mom passed away...sis and brother went and drove around...so sad to see so many buildings and homes in their state. Need to go back and discover some of the things we never did! Hey, did you ever eat the best spaghetti at Colichia's Italian in Port Arthur...now it's in Groves. My favorite ever! We grew up on Moma Colichia's food! And those grapes hanging from the ceiling! Those were the days!!!

I'm super impressed! You made PA look great! I'm a little upset that you included The Schooner, without clarifying that it's in Nederland, not Port Arthur, but I can understand why. After all, it's right across the highway! Lol Seriously, this is an excellent video! You guys are fun to watch! Sending love from Nederland! ❤️

I just discovered your channel this morning before going to the office. I'm happy to see someone who appreciates Texas as much as I do. I'm a Texas Native and I live in Houston currently but go between here and Austin. I'm now following your channel from both of my channels. This one where I'm a blonde and the other where I have long black hair true to my heritage as a member of the Chickasaw Nation. I'm excited to see the rest of your videos to see what I can explore in Texas this year.

sea rim state park back in the 1970s-80s was a nice place to camp. i pulled my apache pop up there , many times. they even had a museum , which was quite impressive. those dam hurricanes can ruin everything and back then it was a family fun environment and kids loved it. i really miss those times, which are just nice memories now.

My late husband graduated from Jefferson High and "knew of" Janis Joplin during those school years. Knowing how she felt about PA - I think she would laugh her behind off knowing that the town is not only claiming her but talking about how good she was. My favorite memory of PA - going crabbing!

I beg your pardon; the flawed cause of the Confederacy. A true Southerner would never say that. It is the same as saying the Battle of the Alamo was flawed.

Protecting slavery was a flawed cause. And the Battle of the Alamo was about much more than slavery despite what some are chanting now.

@@dice12tx let's keep the hate speech down sir. Nobody is saying the war was one dimensional. Nobody should pretend it was all about slavery. But nobody should pretend it wasn't about slavery.
@cavscout62

Sorry to be the bearer of Facts that are uncomfortable for so many but, the War Of Northern Aggression wasn’t about Slavery. Slavery was just used as an aside to motivate more Men to the Actual cause which was centralized power in DC and Unconstitutional Federal Reach in general. We all know Slavery is wrong just as we know it’s been a part of World History as long as Mankind has been separated from God and every Race Of People have been Enslaved at one time or another and many people are still Enslaved today. Revisionist history is Wrong and is used as an attempt at dividing people based on skin color and as a means of keeping people dependent upon the tax dollars of the Working Middle Class of all skin colors. Do some Reading and I don’t mean seeking out echo chamber online material that reinforces your preferred and comfortable opinion. There are thousands and perhaps millions of Books on this subject that were written in the time of this conflict which are filled actual Government Documents that show the actual reasons for the conflict. Saying that particular conflict was about Slavery is just as big a Lie as the Lie of “our democracy”. Wake Up.
