Not much more to say about this, and before anyone gets too debatey with me on this one. My partner literally ran for the Green party in NZ, this stuff is their platform and i voted for her ;) I really don't have the energy nor inclination to debate folks about the relative merits of every policy card in here. There are other forums you can discuss such things. Any comments about climate change being faked etc will get you banned.

How did she do in the election?

Pretty well, we have an MMP system and she was running primarily for party vote over personal vote. But that said, she got more than twice the personal vote of any of the prior green candidates in the electorate. As for the party vote, which was the goal, the electorate was i believe the 5th highest voting one for the Green party overall, and also the % growth of votes over previous years was in the top 5 as well. So very strong. The green as a party got 11.6% of the nationwide vote which translated into 15 members of parliament. Steph was 20th on the party list so missed out, but it was also her first time running.

"I really want to play this game in Parliament". ❤ I'd love for Congress here in the states to play this game, but if this game did have an age cap, they would just about all exceed it.

This game is phenomenal. I had high hopes because I love the theme and I loved the look, but it managed to exceed my expectation. It’s so tense but so satisfying, it captures that arc of many cooperative games of being like, “this is impossible, how can we overcome this” to feeling that wave of seeing things starting to turn around. The card icon system works very smoothly, and it is very intriguing to just keep turning those gears. The resilience system for dealing with crisis cards is also very clean. The big thing though is how cooperative it truly is. A lot of cooperative games have the “we’re all on the same team” thing, but you still feel like separate people doing your thing. I’ve played Daybreak at 1, 2, and 4 players, and it’s always different and thrilling. The sense of cooperation is so strong, as you simultaneously do your turns constantly talking about what you need and how you can help and who can help with the global project and how can we deal with this crisis. This is how I want cooperation to work. This game deserves a lot of love and I haven’t been seeing it get too much so far. I hope word of mouth gets out and people start playing this more, because it deserves a lot of respect, not just for its theme and educational properties, but because I think this is one of the best cooperative games in years.

I think the idea of asymmetric co-operative play really needs to be explored more. I love how it's implemented here, but damn has it got my brain fizzy about how it can be used to adjust difficulty.

@@3MBG I mean, if Matt Leacock can redefine what cooperative games are with another game after doing it before, I’d be fine with this being used as a template. When I taught the 4 player group I took Majority World since I’d played before, and when I looked at the setup I was like, oh dear god

Excellent review of an excellent game. One of the best board games I've played. I think this pushes beyond cooperative into collaborative. If you're Europe and you mostly play from your hand what works best for Europe's board without seeing what's needed globally or by other players, you probably won't win the game. What helps mitigate some of the "one shouty player" problem is that all the decisions have pros and cons so there isn't just one "I've played a lot and know THE right answer" thing for Shouty to be shouting. It's a lot more about bringing together everyone's ideas and pros and cons and then each player making their decision on what they want to do with their cards, but their decision then creating options for or changing the decision space for the others. No 'group solitaire' problem with this one! One nice feature is the QR codes on every card that load a web page which, in addition to giving more real-world context on the concepts, have the card explanation and sometimes examples. So helpful!

Played this several times in BGA. Only managed one victory. I think the game is great, but either we suck a lot at it or I dont see the complains some have about it being "too optimistic". Optimistic? We lost all forest in round 3 in one game! Frankly, it frightens me to think that we arent doing even a quarter of the stuff the cards say. Granted that the game is not a perfect simulation of climate change management, but after the ridiculous spectacle of COP28, at least in the game we do stuff, not just sit there to find out how to pretend to do it.

I get what they what they were going for with the asymmetry and as who you can play as. But man, does it frustrate me ,as someone from the global south, that large parts of the rest of the world is just lobbed into one player card. A key part of climate change is dealing with colonialism and just does not look like they are escaping that view point in thinking that only rich nations like the USA and Europe are key players in this.(Sorry don't mean to be grumpy, it still looks mechanically great.)
@3MBG
@3MBG 7 месяцев назад
I hear what you are saying, but how it works is that the majority world has vastly higher growing demand for resources than Europe and USA. Those 2 players can easily solve their own issues, and if thats all they do, they will lose the game. Europe and USA having clean plates doesn't win you anything. In fact in a 4 player game they have 2/7th of the growth between them, with China also being 2/7th and majority world 3/7th. The majority world is the most important player in the game by far. I hope that clarifies thins.

I loved it. Possibly my favourite Leacock game, which is saying a lot! As China I removed my dependence on polluting energy completely, which was a nice dream to have ….

Very excited to table this one. I'd heard that it plays out a bit like cooperative terraforming mars; any thoughts on that comparison?

The long and short of it is I love engine builders, and it takes the tag based engine building the makes Terraforming mars and Ark Nova super popular and puts it into a co-op. Which is just neato, now instead of using my engine building powers for evil and crushing my friends, I can use them to help them for once.

Just like with CO2, I feel uncomfortable playing a game about a crisis that is still very much happening in real life despite what corporations pay our politicians under the table to say.

I found CO2 first edition to be a bit predictable and preachy. Daybreak seems to be cast in a different mold.
