Daylight: An Underrated Sylvester Stallone Movie?

1995 wasn’t a good year for Sylvester Stallone at the multiplex. His summer tentpole, Judge Dredd, flopped domestically, and it was quickly followed by Richard Donner’s Assassins, which only grossed $30 million at the domestic box office. While Sly’s career had seen a few slumps, typically his straightforward action movies always performed, and the failure of those two movies put his clout as one of the world’s biggest stars in jeopardy. In this episode of Sylvester Stallone Revisited, we’re going to talk about a movie that was supposed to be a big-budget, commercial, change of pace for the actor but wound up being the last would-be blockbuster he’d star in for years. That’s right, we’re going to talk about Rob Cohen’s Daylight.

Fun Fact: During the filming in Italy, Stallone walked into the boutique of the dying wristwatch brand, Panerai. He loved how much bigger the watches were than the average watch and how they fit on his larger wrists. He began wearing them (a good shot at 4:42) and gifted many to other actors. They eventually became the defacto watch of Hollywood action stars. Panerai eventually named one their models the "Daylight" after the film, in gratitude for Stallone's saving of their company. These watches can still be seen, being worn on-screen by many Hollywood A-listers, such as Jason Stathom, The Rock, and Arnold Schwarzenegger ⌚⌚⌚

Daylight is my favorite Sylvester movie he plays a everyday hero trying to make a difference. As soon as the action starts he’s in full hero mode and doesn’t stop. How many people or citizens would do what he did risk his life to save others. No bad guys but the force of nature itself.

I also believe it's one of those movies that, despite its clichés and sometimes over-the-top scenarios, still manages to keep you on the edge of your seat. Stallone truly has a knack for embodying these rugged, yet loveable heroes. It's interesting to revisit older films like this and see how stars like Viggo Mortensen and Danielle Harris have evolved in their careers since then. The practical effects indeed lend a real sense of urgency and danger to the situation, which can sometimes be lost in the world of CGI-dominated films we see today. Randy Edelman’s score - it's one of those that can easily be overlooked, but it really does set the tone and atmosphere throughout the film. Your nostalgia-filled review just made me want to revisit this underrated gem. Here's to more rediscoveries of somewhat forgotten classics!

As someone who worked on THIS movie (in the editing Dept.), I can dish that the previews were in the 90% positive range, there was talk of a sequel and Cohen was going to do Saving Private Ryan next. All that changed when the movie bombed... 😢

I'm a big fan of disaster flicks and Daylight was one of the first I ever saw along with Twister and Independence Day. I was fourteen that year and I guess because it was one of the first films of that type that I saw it's been one of my favorites. Funny story about it. When I first went to see it in the cinema there was an issue about a third of the way through the movie and the film reel burned apart in the projector. So we got free tickets for a future showing. It was the only time this ever happened that I remember.

Stallone is the ideal star to carry a disaster movie. His physicality and heroic persona are both perfect for the genre. You can picture this guy laying down his life for strangers. Stallone has always been convincing playing noble characters. The only problem with this film is that the ending is a bit weak....it's almost as if they got Stallone underground, and couldn't figure out an entertaining way to get him back out again. But up til then, it was an outstanding film.

It's just so weird that this one completely forgettable, meh action film from 1996 changed the entire industry irrevocably, forever. When word got out in Hollywood that Sly was going to get an INSANE $20 million fee for his role, actors like Jim Carrey and Will Smith freaked out. Carrey of course insisted on $20 million for "The Cable Guy," Arnie got $20 million for his twenty minutes in "Batman & Robin" making him officially the highest paid actor per minute in history. Since most of those movies were outright bombs, the studio heads panicked and set a hard cap of $20 million on ANY contract going forward that his still never been breached. Harrison got exactly $20 million for Indy 5 and after that bombed as well you probably won't see an actor's salary that high again.
