Nice! Yeah I can see the resemblance. Also, the original cover for the game on the US with the spiders and the muscle-bound Chris with a shotgun? Now that I see him, he sorta resembles Stallone as well.
I have a minor anecdote relating to this picture, which now makes me CRINGE at myself. During the filming of this I was living in Rome, where this was shot. Anyhow, one Friday night, myself and my flat mate where in the American Bookstore. It had a small video rental department in the back, and whilst means Ralph are looking what to rent, who should walk in but Stallone. He was with a blonde woman, which i didn't recognise. My friend failed to notice that Sly was also in the store. I thought it was hilarious to call out Stallone movies, which i knew Ralph would hate. Obviously, he was very vocal about hating my choices. He was loud enough for Sly to hear and I struggled to not burst out laughing. In fairness to Stallone, he was a great sport and grabbed a copy of Judge Dredd and whilst handing it to my pal, said "I hear this one is pretty good". My pal was literally dumbstruck and just repeatedly looked at the VHS and then Stallone. I think Stallone was so cool about it, as he was trying to impress the mystery blonde on his arm. I was only 18 at the time, so that's my excuse for being so cringey. PS, I've never seen Daylight, but I love Oli's reviews.
I loved Daylight. It's one of those where anytime it's on cable, I watch. It always rips my heart out when they leave George. Stan Shaw is always so good, and his final scene with Sly is pitch perfect.
Just wanted to say thank you for all the content over the years, I finally finished all the back catalogue (except the commentaries). It’s a crime you aren’t more popular via subscribers
You hit the nail on the head with that. I was about to say the exact same thing. I forgot the entire movie, but I know I've seen it. How does a movie miss so many levels of recollection?
Thanks for the review Oliver Harper, you're the best. Easily one of my favourite Stallone films and one of Sly's best. It's just sad that we don't see movies like this anymore.
@Moogle Midgar Have you seen Stallone's more recent films like Rambo 5, the Escape Plan sequels, Expendables 3 and Bullet to the Head. Those films were awful, but this film is amazing and underrated. I don't hate you for that your a good guy.
@Moogle Midgar I'm fully aware of this SJW agenda and political correctness. That's why I just stick to movies from the 1970s, the 1980s, the 1990s and by extent the 2000s. I know that I'm not a fan of Trump, but I am sick and tired of "Trump sucks", Trump jokes and PC culture references. 2019 was the worst year of the 2010s.
Oliver. Again. Thank you so much for this Retrospective. Everytime you make a post, you make my day/week/month. Big fan and patreon. Looking forward for the next one. We need to grow this channel! You deserve SO much more! Big love.
I fraking love this movie! Its one of the last great disaster movies that I feel like no one ever saw! Seriously - I busted out the DTS laserdisc of this just 2 weeks ago for 4 of my friends, a good amount of bev's and man just a great time we had! The movie has amazing action set pieces, bombastic sound design and deserves to be seen by more people! Great review as always sir - Cape Cod, MA!!
I found this in one of those bins in blockbuster ex rental vhs tapes when I was 13. Bought it for £2 and watched the shit out of it with my brother for years. Totally forgot it existed. Thank you!
I saw this in theaters with my dad, and I remember thinking it was just “ok”. I probably enjoy it more now just because of the time period it reminds me of.
Good movie, watched it recently. Could you do The Specialist? Also, a lot of people are asking for The Great Escape including me, please do retrospective on it! :)
Personally, I love this movie. When everyone comes to help George, I break down. It's a great hope of mine for people to put all the bullshit aside and do whatever they can together to save someone else in just one moment. 😢❤❤
This in my opinion was perhaps Stallone's most polished action movie. It had a handsome budget, some amazing visual effects and stunts, and as inconsistent as Sly's acting can be at times, he was really excellent in this!
I really like this movie. I like Stallone, I used to watch TV series "Judging Amy", this movie also has very good soundtrack. Overall one of my favourite Stallone movies. Love the scene with the giant turbines. Great retrospective as usual.
One fun fact about this movie is also how Stallone decided to wear a watch from a local, until then unsuccessfull watchmaker from Italy named Panerai. Long story short, Panerai is today one of the most popular premium watchbrands today. One of many examples is The Rock, he wears a Panerai in several of his movies.
I really loved Daylight, remember it well. I certainly remembered Amy Brenneman being in it. Didn't like her character in NYPD Blue at all, although she flashed a nice butt, but didn't like her. It was nice to see her in something completely different. This was it. By the way, I also love Driven, don't care what critics or reactions to it were, I loved it and have it on German blu ray, although it cost a damn fortune. Also have I See You on blu ray, which is excellent, but I have it under it's D-Tox title, a Scandinavian copy. Might get this too.
Honestly one of my favorite disaster films and Stallone films. I like that Kit wasn't a strait up action hero and at several points in the film you feel for him as he is having to roll with the punches. I will say some of the supporting characters are a touch annoying at the beginning but by the end they form a good friendship with each other. This is a movie I love to watch and normally do a double feature with Dante's Peak
@@Christian39521 A couple of years later The Wicker Man remake with some overacting of women battering and dodgy CGI bees Cage is known for over acting.
Again you have delivered a review that was absolutely on point. Took the words right out of my head. I still don't know why the critics were so hard on this film...
I really love this movie, actually I use to watch this movie almost every Saturday night on VHS, it was a kind of a ritual I was 13 at the time I know is not a masterpiece but it's one of those movies that brings good memories
How the hell do you only have 153k.subscribers? I love these reviews and share them quite often. Really looking forward to your channel growing even more and faster.
Bit of a funny story. My mom and I went to see this when it came out in theaters and to the best of my memory this was the only movie I ever saw (when film was still the standard) where the movie got cut off. It was right during a pivotal moment of the movie when the survivors are about to make it out when the film reel suddenly burns or cuts out leaving a blank white screen. Everyone in the theater were given a free ticket to see the movie another time, which we did. Btw, this is actually one of my favorite movies. It was one of the first disaster flicks I ever watched at the time (other than Twister) and despite its shortcomings I’ve always really liked Daylight. I also remember going to see all the other big disaster flicks brought up such as Titanic, Dante’s Peak, Volcano, Deep Impact, Armageddon and The Day After Tomorrow.
i'm still waiting on his retrospective/review of "Alien vs. Predator", as he briefly mentions it during his retrospective of "Predator 2" several years back
Anyone else notice Stallone dressed like Chris Redfield from Resident Evil when wearing his tactical vest? They did both come out in 96….hmmm. As much as I love Daylight, especially Viggo’s character Nord, how cool would of it been if the same toxic chemicals that caused the explosion also turned the dead people into zombies?!?
This is actually a possibility right now with the Holland Tunnel. There's a plan to reinforce it, and probably replace it. If they can't fully rehab it, they plan on fully imploding it. It's supposed to begin the reinforce project around 2026 and the replacement/expansion in 2032. The tunnels aren't designed to last 100 years without a overhaul.
I saw this last when I was 10-11 years old in the 90s and I always loved this film. I notice very few people have even heard of it, even those who grew up in the 1990s.
I like this video before I even watched it. I did that because I'm just happy someone is finally talking about this movie. No one ever does it just seems to have not existed Thanks.
Great as always Oliver. I don't think I've ever seen this one. I may have seen bits of this movie when we had HBO and Encore back in this day, but never the whole movie. Interesting to know that this movie is loosely based on a real disaster that happened in the forties. Personally I can't fully judge on this movie because I haven't seen the whole movie, but from what I see here, it does seem like an entertaining disaster movie. I might looks for this one on Netflix sometime.
I remember this was one of those times when two movies with almost the same premise come out at the same time. Kinda like Armageddon and Deep Impact, this movie came out with a movie called Hard Rain.
Hah! I had no Idea I had a 2 links to this film! I was an extra (SWAT team member) in Sudden Death while still in school in Pittsburgh. Then later when I was working in the model shop at ILM on Daylight helping prototype techniques for shooting the miniature scenes. But was soon pulled to work on Star Trek: FC and later Deep Impact :)
I genuinely enjoyed the 90's re-float of Disaster Movies. Saw most of them on DVD at the time. Most were quite good and did what they said on the tin. I thought this one was a solid entry.
Shame about the soundtrack not being able to have been reprinted or expanded... nevertheless thanks for doing the retrospective video on one of my favourites as a kid Oliver. Great work!
Oliver Harper thank you for making amazing content Oliver, this and Dante’s Peak were some of my favourites as a kid, still are great to watch every now and then. Thank you again for the great content.
I can see why critics hated this movie so much, and some of the people were pretty annoying, but the film had a good frantic pace, ASTOUNDING special effects (the lack of CGI makes this like 100x better than if it were made today), good enough performances to sell the characters and story, and very good replay value. I definitely enjoy it.
I remember this film was scheduled to be shown on UK terrestrial TV the week of 9/11, maybe it was the ITV weekend movie. Then after the attacks, they advertised a change. Really sad fact to remember. Also, it is really reminiscent of a 70s movie called A Short Walk to Daylight which has basically the same premise but much less budget www.imdb.com/title/tt0069263/ I used to think this film was a remake of that
Great review like always. That was Claire Bloom!? The Spy Who Came From The Cold, Limelight, also Doc Martin’s horrid mother from hell. To think Raffaella DeLaurentiis’s father Dino built a rival studio to Cinecitta in Rome during the 60s
Oh, finally this review ^_^. I'm not agreed that it's forgettable tho or it's just me that I think it's one of the most unique "disaster" movies. You said by yourself there are few volcano movies, few asteroid movies and etc. while I can't think for another movie which plot happens underground, hmm. I even think of the movie very often without a reason, dunno :D
OMG. I don't remember this movie at ALL! It looks AWESOME! Of course...that could just be Oliver's equally AWESOME movie trailer creation skills... ;) (I JUST started watching the video.) :D
