Review of Uncanny X-Men Annual 14, by Chris Claremont and Art Adams, with inks by Dan Green, Bob Wiacek, Al Milgrom, and Steve Moncuse, Marvel Comics 1990
Cover by Art Adams! Note, this features the first published appearance of Gambit!
This annual contains two stories. First, "Days of Future Present", Part 4 of 4, which features Franklin Richards from the dystopian future seen in UXM 141-142; he re-connects with Rachel Summers/Phoenix, and hopes to live happily ever after with her; however, Ahab turns the Invisible Woman and Cyclops into hounds in order to hunt down the young lovers; the FF, X-Men, X-Factor and New Mutants track Ahab to his lair, where they defeat him and force him to teleport away; Franklin learns that he is not flesh and blood, but an astral ghost, and so he agrees to sacrifice himself to save Sue, Scott, Rachel and young Franklin!
Second, "The Fundamental Things", by Claremont and Mark Heike, with inks by Geoff Isherwood, which features Wolverine, Jubilee, and Psylocke in Madripoor, where Franklin and Rachel pay them a visit; because he doesn't recognise them, Franklin disappears Psylocke and Jubilee from our reality; but Wolverine explains to him that with great power, comes great responsibility, and so he brings them back!
Also, features a pin-up of the Outback male X-Men by Kevin Nowlan and an alternative cover by Michael Golden!

Oh, I loved this Annual and the tie in of the Fantastic Four, Ahab was such a Cruel Villian like a twisted Social Worker.

The annual introducing the future villain going grey in a REALLY familiar pattern. And hinted here to be of Scottish or Welsh derivation. Mississippi... Scotland... hmmm.

Also, there's his "bampf" teleportation sound effect. Is it just a generic sound, or is it a signature?

@@comicsbazaar4508 Does this suggest he's a mutant, and if so what's his power? Forge refers to the Hound transformation not being a mechanical transformation but that the Tomb's modules interact with energies inside Ahab Technological energies, or mutant ones? And where exactly was this Tomb he set up that he also escaped and left our heroes behind in?
@comicsbazaar4508
@comicsbazaar4508 Год назад
@@Pork_Hunt Well, if we're talking about what Claremont might have had planned for him, then he could be a mutant. That would be suitably grim that he'd turn on and hunt down his own kind. But after Claremont left, Scott Lobdell established in Excalibur that Moira MacTaggart's colleague on Muir Isle Roderick "Rory" Campbell, a human psychologist, might become Ahab.

So what came first x men 266 or this?
@comicsbazaar4508
@comicsbazaar4508 Год назад
This came out first. In fact it came out even before 265. So when Storm and Gambit appear, it spoils the outcome of 267 when Storm gets her adult memories back.

I noticed you skipped annual #13. I think the meme phrase which best fits the lack of that issue....."and nothing of value was lost". I wasn't aware of that planned connection between Gambit and Mr Sinister. Thanks for that bit of info. I've watched your commentary twice on that second story....am I missing the part you said you would connect with the first story regarding Scott possibly not being Rachel's father? That's not how I interpreted Ahab's comment when I read the issue. I took it more as Rachel's ability being so strong that it surprises Ahab by being able to block even her father. However.....with the knowledge I have years later, that Claremont was quite unhappy with Scott for leaving his wife.....if your interpretation is that someone else (Logan maybe?) is Rachel's father, then I can see Claremont doing that. It likely wouldn't have been his intention from the beginning though. The X-Men and Alpha Flight limited series, and issue 201, when Rachel and Scott interact, there aren't any questions regarding Scott being Rachel's father.

I remember your trauma re: Annual #13. Yes, well noted, and my omission! I meant to join the dots there, and it's exactly that -- in my view -- Claremont was insinuating that Logan was Rachel's father. After John Byrne brought Jean back from the dead/Jamaica Bay (referenced in the annual) and the original X-Men became X-Factor, Claremont, who wanted Jean to stay dead (and she wonders herself if she wouldn't have been better off staying dead in the annual) used the opportunity of Classic X-Men, including the back-ups, to re-write Logan and Jean's relationship, insinuating something mutual between them that isn't there in the original UXM issues when Jean is utterly dismissive of Wolverine. So, I figure something was cooking there. That there is something smouldering between Jean and Logan is all down to Claremont. And as Jean notes herself in the annual, she's not a mother, and she's not even married. It's all partly soap opera, so maybe Logan, not Scott, will turn out to be Rachel's real father.

@@comicsbazaar4508 Interesting. Lots of unanswered questions from Claremont's abrupt departure. Not the least of which....something I've been wondering for decades.....what is up with Rachel's hat in the beginning of this annual??? Haha
