Days of Hope (BBC, 1975) was Ken Loach's first historical piece and, although tracing events fifty or more years previous, it was strongly informed by the contemporary situation of the 1970s. Parallels can be drawn between the political and industrial struggles of the 1910s and '20s and the 1970s, particularly in the treatment of the 1926 General Strike and the industrial unrest.
"Episode One: 1916" introduces viewers to the four main family protagonists. Pacifist Christian socialist Philip Hargreaves (Nikolas Simmonds) has married into a Yorkshire farming family. While his wife Sarah (Pam Brighton) supports him, other members of the Matthews family are either hostile or apathetic. Despite being warned about the realities of war by a soldier on leave, Ben Matthews (Paul Copley) enlists while Philip is arrested as a conscientious objector and condemned to death on the front-line after other coercive measures (mentioned above) fail. Only a last minute reprieve saves him from execution. The episode concludes with Ben in Ireland witnessing national resilience against the British invaders.

Scene (58min15sec into video) shows that while Philip vaguely challenges those in power based narrowly on moral principle, the other man, presumably socialist, specifically challenges the ruling elite based more broadly on political and historical consciousness. In that way the scene foreshadows what's to come. Brilliant.

This is when television was something that was worth watching...Quality programmes well written and produced with auteurs like Ken Loach, Dennis Potter, Alan Bleasdale and others at the forefront...... Today it's just utter shit with endless reality t.v and poor production values all dumbing down a population who know no better... I'm in Australia and it's obviously just as atrocious in my former home , the U.K... Sadly the days of shows like this on television seem to have gone forever... I have had a busy and wonderful life , now that I am laid up I watch more TV IN A WEEK THAN A YEARS WORTH IN THE 80’s to the 2000’s I prefer to watch things I can learn from. Documentaries are well made on both sides of the Atlantic, I have really found I enjoy your British Cop Shows they solve without Guns. The shows themselves seen to be more Thought Based and less Action Based... I am with you about Live Trash Shows that celebrate Base and Lowlife behavior that is celebrated as cool...

They were filmed in the same period probably on the same equipment. I love that era of British films for some reason. I suppose it’s because when I was a little boy home from school I watched a lot of PBS and they would show a lot of British stuff from that period. Something about that old film stock up until the mid to late 80s all looks the same. They used a lot of natural light and daytime shooting, probably because it’s cheaper

I was born in 1944 in the Viscount Earl Haig memorial Hospital in Hawick Roxbughshire. He apparently lived locally in some big house or another. Generous man, I suppose it was to make up for all the people who died to save Haigs whisky from a German takeover. My father was a Marine sent for Winter training so I'm the son of the gun. Strangely the survivors of the firsr war. Talked about how awfull it was and then moaned about the plum and apple jam.My grannie danced with men from the Boer war. She hated war as the troops told her off burning the Boer wood as there was none on the Veldt Found out later it was all about selling goods. By the bourgeoise. Socialism is still the answer to capitalist war.

+Michael Fay Quite right! Surely no coincidence that successive elites have worked so hard to steer this political school of thought towards becoming the "new heresy'. Meanwhile, much public money props up the private sector (banks, railways, and the bits of NHS they've managed to make so inefficient that they could be bought for peanuts, and latterly privatized - to be more 'efficient' of course!) ----> also known as "reverse socialism'. Meanwhile European states (e.g. France and Germany) have bought bits and pieces of UK infrastructure (utilities and railways) ----- smell a rat? perhaps!!!!

@@bigmamababy4283 I agree! It is a mistake many make thinking that Socialism is the "answer to the elites" - when in reality, Socialism has its own elites who dictate how the plebs can live! Capitalism gives us the freedom to thrive or fail, so many people who fail at life blame the Capitalist system. Truth be told, Capitalism has pulled more people out of poverty than any other social system. Socialism has killed over 100 million people so far! Our rights come from God, NOT the government!

Elr James The "at that time" is an excellent point. People in the west were far less enlightened in 1914. And chances are that I too , back then , would be stupid enough to believe that god existed and that he desired me to go to France to kill German boys. But , Elr , I was just making a light-hearted observation on the juxtaposition of the imagery. I'd like to think Loach wanted us to see the visual irony.
