Living alone in the woods has its perks… but we’re over being alone out here in the woods! As a van life couple we’re used to living in a tiny home, moving around a lot and meeting new faces on the road. We’ve adjusted well to living remotely in the wilderness and managing a DIY cabin build/ renovation but every once in a while ITS TIME for company!! Our hearts are so full to share this space and to be no longer alone at our cabin! We hope you enjoy coming along for this new adventure with us!

Our Journey! How did we get here?
In the winter of 2019 we moved in to our self built van full time to begin living, working and travelling Canada. We quickly fell in love with chasing our dreams of adventuring off the beaten path, living off grid and being self sustaining. We drove our van thousands of miles through various countries-Canada, USA, Mexico & Guatemala. All of which we documented here on our channel, be sure to check that out! After many years on the open road we found ourselves 15 acres of remote woods on the East Coast of Canada where we are building a homestead and renovating our fully off the grid cabin. We are diving into this chapter of our lives in no experience, we're so happy we can bring you all along as we learn to do it all with our own two hands. We do all our own house stuff now, granted we aren’t off grid, wish we were, but it’s soooo expensive in England. My eldest son 27 is just buying a house, so we start all over helping him and his fiancé soon. 😊

This vlog was a little exhausting to watch. Didn't know what was happening in the beginning. Came across too chaotic. Once I saw Bella go crazy, I quickly realized Grandma was there. Wow how they both love Grandma! Those 6 yrs they spent with Grandma had to be sooo very awesome for them! That says so much about the character & love Grandma (Laurie?) has. Kudos!!! It warms my heart when an animal shows that level of love towards a human. Oh & after watching this video, I walked over to my indoor toilet & said out loud to no one listening..."I am sooo greatful for running water & my septic tanks!"

For the outhouse. If you haven't already done so, buy a piece of 6" diameter black ABS pipe, the longer the better. Put the bottom end in the vapor space under the floor right next to the hole. The rest is vertical up through the inside of the outhouse (usually in a corner for space savings) out the roof. It might be good to even add a joint to make it taller. In your area, you might want to put an elbow on the top end to keep rain from running down the inside. The concept is one well used. The black pipe heats up from the sun and creates a thermosyphon. This creates an updraft that pulls air from the bottom (in the air space next to the hole) and vents it high above the roof. The longer it is, the more surface to get hot. Now, always keep the toilet seat closed when not in use and you will have a natural vent system that also works very well in preventing flies.

When you take a wire through an outside wall, if you can, slope it downwards to the outside. Also if the wire is going up the outside, put a loop down first. That way any drips running down the wire fall off harmlessly, rather than tracking into the inside. Top tip. 😉

You two make every project fun, even the outhouse. I couldn't quite tell what type of construction screws you were using. If you haven't tried the Torx head screw, I think you'll see they are easy to use and take out if necessary.

What wonderful happenings with family and friends!!! Yay!!! So much fun packed into this vid. The Aussie Attitude was off the scale with greeting Laurie Canning, supervising, telling you how to lay the cloth, and chasing the shovel!! I loved every minute of that - and miss having it around the house. So much progress you're making. (Now - take a hint from my boat building heritage - when you get ready to move the shed - take trees to act as rollers - lift the shed on it and slide it along over the trees - which should roll - then if needed take the trees from behind - run them up front and keep going.) The fire pit area looks so dreamy and the food so yummy. Great time with everyone. I look forward to next week's vid! Paws Up!! 💛💛

I have just discovered your channel. And I've watched a lot of them to catch up from fixing up a van for cross country to buying a cottage in the middle of nowhere. And your friends in between, T/T. Great video as always. Amazing. Just a thought - I follow another women vlogger who with her husband builds cabins, log homes in both Alaska and the states where they live. They have videos on building everything from outhouses to digging wells the old fashion way to save money. Her channel is "Girl in the Woods". They show building an outhouse with an economical clear plexiglass roof to let in natural light during the day and moonlight and stars at night. I thought that was super cool and maybe something you may consider. Kudos on all your hard work. Hugs from Toronto.

What a transformation! Many hands make it so much more fun and productive; the fun part certainly shows. I was curious about the outhouse design....not sure yet what you found wrong, but I'm disappointed you didn't consider a composting toilet. It's very simple technology (a bit more troublesome in cold climates, but doable). Hopefully you look into it. Pooping into a hole is not a good option. In fact, you could install a composting toilet inside where it is warm. Maybe you guys intend to leave when it gets winter???

Thanks Tim! We have a compost toilet as well in the van. We have plans for another bathroom in the cabin. Having a outhouse is super important though. We will talk more on that on ep. to come

so you know the benefits of a composting toilet: not too much effort for so much benefit (not dumping poop into the water table). Sure, you are in a VERY remote place, which makes it less important, but you two have such a GREAT following that it is important to demonstrate good practices in all conditions. Thnks again for your fun-to-watch episodeds.

Great video. Great to see you getting some help from family and friends too. Looking forward to your review of StarLink versus Explornet satellite as we are waiting for ours and currently have Explornet and while it’s okay we are hoping StarLink is a big upgrade here in Kawartha Lakes, Ontario. Picked up on the roof mount bracket requirement but not sure where to go to add it to our order. Is this something you can add when they confirm your shipment? As always , great progress. Thanks for sharing.

Hi Simon! Thanks for watching xx Yes the roof mount is hard to find. Unfortunately, I don’t think starlink sells the ridge line roof mount (that’s what need) but I did find one on Amazon. However, I’m going to have to MacGyver it so it fits the 3/4 pipe. Sorry I don’t have more of an answer. We will show in a video when we get it on the roof 100%. Starlinks site does however sell a roof mount but it’s just a flat one. With all our trees we need to it right on the peak.
