Did you know the sport of NASCAR had its beginnings on the beach in Daytona, Florida? In this video I visit the site of the original Daytona Beach and Road Course located on the Ponce Inlet. As a person who grew up in motorsports, this was a fun trip! I also headed north of the original course to where many of the early land speed records were set. I know this is a bit of a departure from my normal videos, but I hope you still enjoy it!

I remember hearing about racing on the beach. Glad you included all the old footage. It's so interesting to see the early racers. I used to love to go to stock car races when I was a young adult. Great video. This certainly deserves recognition. Thanks!

A FASCINATING LOOK AT THE OLD DAYTONA!! I WAS EXPOSED VERY LITTLE TO TELEVISION IN MY YOUNGER DAYS, SO THIS IS MY FIRST REAL LOOK AT HOW IT WAS!! MY FIRST REAL EXPOSURE TO CIRCLE TRACKING WAS THE OLD MIDWAY RACE TRACK BETWEEN PAOLA AND OSAWATOMIE!!! ONE OF MY BOYHOOD MENTORS GOT INTO DIRT TRACKING BRIEFLY, IN 1957, AND RACED THERE! I GRAVITATED MORE TO DRAG RACING A FEW YEARS, THEN TO TRACTOR PULLING, UNTIL 1982! ANOTHER LOCAL LARGE TRACK THAT WENT DOWN ,IS THE I-70 RACE TRACK EAST OF ODESSA MO!

I lived in Daytona in the 1960s and 1970s and back then the beach was not built up at all except for a couple houses, no condos. My father-in-law raced Indian motorcycles on the beach long before I knew him. Spent a lot of weekends having picnics at the lighthouse before they restored it and opened it to the public. Ponce Inlet was my favorite place in Daytona. Just sand and palmetto bushes. I hate what it has turned into and all the restrictions on the beach of where you can drive and having to pay to go on it! It has killed Daytona tourism.

1955 my brother and I snuck into the race by clawing through the palmetto thicket near the south turn. The racers would fly down the paved backstretch and sometimes fly over the embankment. Fireball Roberts (an Apopka boy) won the race in a Buick but was later disqualified for some modification.

Hey Coach. This is a fine retrospective and salute to NASCAR . Good tip of the hat to your family and yourself as a competitive racer. My favorite NASCAR driver was the great Junior Johnson. My favorite car for those venues was his 1963 Chevy with The 427 Mystery Motor . You Tube has some old NASCAR events to be seen. Thanks, I was a fan I did not drive as a pro.

Gosh to have been there watching those first racers! I caught the fact that not only gas and steam, electric vehicles raced there as well. That would have been a sight, especially if they had to stop the race because of high tide! Nascar has certainly come a long way, unfortunately I don't think it's as good as it once was. Another great video about simpler times. Stay safe and GOD bless

You have your history wrong, the first Nascar race was "Indeed, beginning in the Prohibition era, the drivers transporting moonshine from rural areas or illegally importing booze from Canada had to make resourceful changes to their vehicles to elude the authorities on winding backroads with hairpin turns." LOL! 🤓

This was awesome. Anytime I’m in the Daytona area I usually am rushed and don’t get to check out things like this. That sand looked brutal in the corners from a drivers perspective. About 20 minutes west of Daytona/Ormand Beach is Volusia speedway, one of my favorite dirt tracks in the country. Great informative video again John!
@TravelwithaWiseguy
@TravelwithaWiseguy 7 месяцев назад
Nice! I didn’t realize Volusia was so close! I can’t even imagine trying to drive that old course. Someone asked what kind of tires would you use?
@pettythief43
@pettythief43 7 месяцев назад
That’s a good question! I know NASCAR was exclusive to Firestone when it was started. I know Firestone was making tires for the Indianapolis 500 as well as dirt sprints at the time. So the composition for a tire to run both surfaces would be interesting to know. Maybe since the course was mainly straights the tires wouldn’t wear from the corners so much that they still had some longevity. It’s an interesting question that I can’t find a solid answer to.

@@TravelwithaWiseguyI loved the days of the "true" stock car also. Grew up going to the local "jalopy" races, when they were using the old coupes and sedans. Later they could run anything up to a 1957 car, and things got faster, and the cars looked more like what was on the road. Several friends raced, and I was on the pit crew. When they started the late models and had the production chassis, we could then use cars up to 1972, and we went faster. Fun memories. I knew about the beach races, but I had never heard that they ran city streets one way. That is very interesting. Amazing what they did back then that would send people today into the ibbie jibbies. Noticed you backed the drone up quickly when the birds started to take flight. Good reflexes!

When the motorcycles raced there they said the transition from the road to the sand was the hardest part. I raced motorcycles in the 80's until the turn of the century. Met a lot of old racers who had raced Daytona like Brad Andres, Dick Mann. Thy left the sand after the 1960 race.
