After a 2.5 hrs in the air, this re-activated 45 year old airplane completes it's first flight after a long storage period in the KMHV boneyard. I shot this from the jumpseat.
My father captained the DC-8 for United Airlines out of LAX from 1966-1971, including the stretch DC-8 beginning in 1968 before moving on to captain of the DC-10 in 1971 and 747 in 1972.
cmom !! take a small course, or private pilot, or do it step by step according your finances... when somebody gives up a dream, everybody else also take a little punishment.
Sure you will! In the meanwhile study aviation, do good in life and help others. Being a pilot means to HELP people to reach their destinations effectively, quite unnoticeable and with safety.
Growing up I flew as a passenger in so many DC-8s I can remember the smell of the cabin while watching this. I used to love this model so much. In turbulent air the wings would flap and the engines would swing from side to side, while the ride stayed nice and smooth inside.
Helium Road the ride is smooth but the engines are so noisy, I’ve never been in this plane but I remember one has crashed in the front of my eyes in saudia arabia - Jeddah more than 17 years ago
Wow man!.. I'll bet that was terrifying. Just looked that one up, I don't want to depress you but it was 27 years ago actually lol 11th July 1991. www.jetphotos.com/photo/8927385
DC-8's were built like a brick sh*t house. Not this bird, but another DC-8 broke the sound barrier while in a controlled dive through 41,000 feet on August 21, 1961
EFIS PFD are around since late 1970's and earliest 1980's when UPS was the first to upgrade the avionics navigation syst. on they DC8 60 and then 70 series aircrafts,
I flew 63F's back in late 90's and enjoyed it. I am guessing that this is one of the retro fitted ones with the CFM56 engines? It sounds great! I am extremely jealous.
You are welcome. My best research indicates that there are only 18 DC-8's left in service worldwide. The re-commissioning of this one brings us to 19. Let's hope she has many more years left in the air.
Anybody fly for SEABOARD WORLD I think there all gone. :( Everybody I knew that flew for Braniff are all gone.. RIP everybody knew some real good people back in the day.. When we had a normal country..
Beautiful aircraft, better than the 707, looks sleeker and the epic air inlets on the nose. This and the Convair 990A are my favorite quads along with the VC-10, IL62.
It IS a DC8 cockpit. This digital instrument are an up grade from the old analog instruments which fail far too often and are very expensive to fix/replace.
Just curious what is the identity of this aircraft restored from the boneyard? Would love to know the story behind it. Can't help noticing the guy in the right seat was a real chatterbox all the way down, bit distracting don'tcha think?
380th DC-8 built. Delivered to Flying Tigers in 1968, then to German Cargo in 1984, Lufthansa Cargo in 1993 (with same registration as last), Aerolease in 1996, Emery Worldwide in 1996, and finally to Air Transport International (ATI) in 2002 with the registration listed in the video title
Kronos and because Douglas back in the day decided to re-engine the DC8 with 4 CFM56 engines so it makes them way more efficient then there predecessors.
According to a fellow countryman, who is an aircraft photographer, he saw this plane at Ostend Airport (Belgium) on 31/12/2013, that had its ferryflight from the U.S. on its way to Fujairah (U.A.E.), destined for a Zambian cargo airline, Stabo Air. Please check airliners.net or planelogger.com. Greetings, Jan.
Great video but a little shaky my advise for these types of videos is if you can get your hands on one of those Go Pro cameras and stick it on the side of the windows it will be stable and it will look awesome your welcome :)
IAH is Houston, TX, also known as George Bush Intercontinental Airport. The flight originated at (K)MHV which is Mojave Air and Space Port in Mojave, CA.
Being that this was a -73, it had most likely upgraded to the 350K lbs GW landing gear and trunnion, so it would still be considered "heavy" Love DC8s from -21 to -73.
The term heavy is used during radio transmissions between air traffic control and any aircraft which has been assigned a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) rating of 136 tonnes (300,000 lb) or more. ... Such "heavy"aircraft over 136 t create wake turbulence from the wings.
The term now for the A-380 is: "Super" but I did not look it up. I think the MGTW of the A-380 is approx. 1.2 million pounds. I may be off on that. The "wake" of wake turbulence. I've read also because of the aerodynamics of the B-757 it produces greater wake turbulence than other aircraft for its size and weight. My friend flew 757's for UNITED and says it's like a sports car. He just bid for the B-777.
