The Static Shock episode will always be a personal favorite. Virgil being so blinded by his love for his mother, and not even willing to notice the obvious paradox he would create by saving her. And her selfless, heroic mentality about saving others no matter what and telling Virgil just how proud she is of the hero he will one day become is so compelling.

I believe the Batmobile nuclear explosion thing was due to the Batmobile being in a different "frame of time". From the reference point of view of the Batmobile, the passing cars were travelling at incredible speeds and Batman made the supposition, that if one collided at the relative speed they were travelling (the civilian cars running in a different time frame) could be enough force to literally fuse atoms, causing a huge release in energy. Sure, the vehicles are travelling at let's say 30 miles per hour in their point of reference, but the Batmobile is no longer running in regular time. It's all about perspective. No one knows what would happen if two objects running at different time reference frames interacted with each other. Right now it's pure SciFi

@ZOIDGARTH

@@PitchBlackLaser I've thought about time stuff a lot. Like in TV and movies, when someone "freezes" time, they can move stuff and people about like they're a statue. But if someone really interacted with something frozen in time, would the atoms even hold together? Pushing against a "time frozen" wall might offer no resistance and you might be able to push right through it as someone moving in frozen time would be travelling at infinite speeds. Gravity also cannot exist in frozen time and the person who froze time certainly wouldn't be able to breathe. It brings up the question of would there be a frozen reflection of the person who froze time stood at their start point?. Would the person in frozen time even be able to see due to light also being frozen? Kinda crazy to think about.
@Derekloffin
@Derekloffin 5 лет назад
He's bringing up the wrong formula (and the scene makes no sense as there is still air colliding with them constantly among many other issues, but whatever), the core concept of them risking a nuclear blast is sound. Nuclear reactions can be caused when the nuclei of atoms collide and if you're going super fast that is one way to cause that type of collision. E = mc^2 comes up then as nuclear reactions are based. Now the funny thing is, the full energy equation of which E = mc^2 derives from (E^2 = m^2 c^4 + p^2 c^2 where the new p is relativistic momentum) is when you start getting into speed mattering, and thus would actually be an issue here as their total energy would effectively be vastly higher. So we can probably let Bats off that he was simply bringing up the more commonly known form of the formula, even though the part of importance is only in the complete formula.

Mass DOES increase with velocity, as indicated by the Special Theory of Relativity - the same theory which gave us E=mc^2. So Batman wasn’t entirely wrong.
@maxwellhosler4918
@maxwellhosler4918 5 лет назад
@@mattiesavannahpahl9934 Acceleration is change in speed over time. Velocity is speed with direction (a vector quantity, as opposed to a scalar quantity). In E=mc^2, the speed of light is a constant, so its important to understand that that's not what represents the speed of a given object in the equation. Mass increases with speed because, as speed increases, energy increases. This means that the E in E=mc^2 increases. Because E=mc^2 means that energy is interchangeable with mass, that means the total mass of the object increases. This is one reason you can't exceed the speed of light; as you get faster, you get heavier you get. As you approach the speed of light, the amount of energy needed to further accelerate you explodes to infinity. This is actually one example of science in popular media being totally accurate (although I don't know enough about the context to know if the nuclear explosion thing is correct). In fact, the whole thing with the 5th dimension 'aligning' with our three dimensions is actually way more bunk than what Bats said. Dimensions are aren't objects in of themselves, they are descriptions of how you can move in space, so the fifth dimension would be connected to ours at every point in space, the same way our 3rd dimension is connected to any 2-D slice of our space at every point. I'm writing this because, as someone who loves math and science and gets annoyed when they are misused in fiction, I really want to defend a time when it was used correctly. That said, love you videos! Keep up the good work!

@maxwellhosler4918 5 лет назад
@@mattiesavannahpahl9934 I'm fairly sure Batman is referring to the right formula. E=mc^2 is why we know mass and energy are the same thing, which is how we know mass increases with velocity. Batman meant the expanded form of that equation: E^2=m^2c^4 +P^2c^2, meaning momentum increases energy too, if Batman and Robin are moving close to the speed of light, which explains the time slowing down, and hit anything, there would be a huge explosion.

Dr. Wakati device didn't allow for traveling backwards in time, only for time deceleration. I can see why it wouldn't be considered time travel (We don't consider Flash using his super-speed as "time travel", when it's basically the exact same thing!) As for Timecode -- he obviously is in public knowledge, after being reported in the news. And even if he's from the future, it doesn't change the fact that he was active in the past. My best guess for why he wouldn't be considered the father of time travel is that he must have been regarded as some crackpot or charlatan. Notice the news report never said he actually succeeded in sending anyone to the future, only that he offered to do so. If there's no record of him actually successfully sending anyone to the future, he could be dismissed as a mere con artist.

Maybe the general public thinks Timecode is a con man or a crazy person. Just because someone says "hey I'm from the future" doesn't mean they are (even in a world like their's) and just because they claim to send people through time doesn't mean they really do. Also, been a while since I've seen the animated series but does the general public know Booster is from the future? Would they believe that ether or think it's just part of his marketing gimmick?

I mean Batman's not wrong, he just skipped a few steps. The mass of an object increases with velocity once you get to relativistic speeds. That's one of the reasons that traveling at the speed of light under any normal means of propulsion is impossible; as your speed approaches light-speed, you begin to become infinitely heavy so that it would take infinite energy to increase your velocity. That's why SciFi invents concepts like Warp Drive and Hyperspace. What Batman means is that if space time around the Batmobile was so distorted that cars moving at normal speed appeared to be moving at relativistic speeds, then a collision might cause the mass of the two cars to fuse at an atomic level, and atomic fusion would mean an energy release equal to the mass of the two cars times the speed of light squared.

5:05 If Batman is refering to "relativistic mass" instead of rest-mass, then he is correct, increasing your velocity increases your kinetic energy, which contributes to your total energy, which increases your relativistic mass. And as it happens, back in the 90's people still used relativistic mass in physics, today the use of the term is quite discourages as it brings confusions, and scientist prefer to reserve rest mass and kinetic energy in separate boxes. There are two formulas in fact, E(rest) = m(rest)c^2 is only a SPECIAL CASE of the Einstein formula for stationary objects only, the full formula is E(total) = sqrt( m(rest)^2c^4 + p^2c^2) where p is momentum ( p = m(rest)*velocity ) , this second general formula accounts for MOVING OBJECTS in a rest-frame, and so this E(total) actually depends on the observer, and can be re-written in a different form with a velocity-dependent mass called relativistic mass: E(total) = m(relativistic)*c^2 and so this new formula is E(total) = E(rest) + E(kinetic) . E(kinetic) = mv^2/2 , then any additional velocity you have in someone's reference frames increses your total E from their point of view, which increases m(relativistic), this "relativistic mass" is what Bruce is talking about, and really does increase with velocity, but only for an outside observer. However, if we re-write the first formula to account for rest mass and momentum separately, E(total) = sqrt( m(rest)^2c^4 + p^2c^2) then we can separate your momentum contribution from your rest-mass and treat them completely separately, if your velocity in one rest-frame is 0, then p is 0 and this formula simplifies to E(rest) = m(rest)c^2 which is the simplified Einstein formula for stationary objects only.

I think you may unwittingly be missing a clue here. It may not be about time travel, but about Chronos himself as a person. In Godzilla's Showa run, in its very last movie, 'Terror Of Mechagodzilla, a Dr. Mafune craved revenge for being laughed out of his institute as Chronos/Clinton was. His assertion about being able to mentally control sea life was questioned ethically, and then when he said he already controlled an undersea dinosaur-kaiju named Titanosaurus, no one believed him and it was the end for his career. Problem is, both the existence of giant monsters and the ability to control them are gigantic blazing DUH's in this world. But even if somehow your explanation about a lack of public knowledge held up entirely (scientists and scholars would certainly know more than most about either kaiju or time travel in worlds that had them), there is another factor I think may override this. Both Clinton and Mafune proved to be fragile, bitter sorts who did horrendous things in the name of how they were slighted. So here's my theory: Chronos and Mafune were assholes. Their colleagues might have been willing to hear them out, but even as withdrawn scientists go, they were horrible at explaining themselves, quick to condemn those who might take a while to get it, and very short-tempered. I doubt it was theory-doubt alone that got them kicked out of their academic positions. They probably put on a scene that sealed their respective fates. Oh, and there are time-traveling kaiju, but that is a mess beyond measure.

What Batman said about speed and mass is correct. C is not the velocity you're moving at, it is the constant of massless particles like photons. The closer a particle with mass moves towards the speed of light, the more mass they gain. This increase to mass makes it harder to accelerate the mass particle to the speed of light. So the result is infinite energy is required to move a mass particle to the speed of light (c) because the particle would have infinite mass.

Don't forget that in DC continuity, there's a difference between alternate timelines and pocket universes. The entire original Legion continuity, for example, turned out to be a pocket universe created by the Time Trapper. My understanding of pocket universes is that, being purpose-made, they don't have alternate timelines. There's only ever one, following a single continuity. They can go back in time to a point before they pocket universe was created but this causes them to leave their own pocket universe, so it's not really time travel in the sense we think of it. The universe with Vandal Savage where he wins the Second World War is probably a pocket universe, for example. Rather than "changing history," he created a pocket universe the starting conditions of which he determined. It also explains how Green Lantern's ring protected their memories; real time didn't change, they were pushed into Vandal's pocket universe.
@LibraGamesUnlimited
@LibraGamesUnlimited 5 лет назад
I think you might be getting pocket universes and alternate timelines mixed up. In that Legion story, you were talking about the Time Trapper was willfully directing their time ship to the pocket universe and back again to trick them into thinking that it was was the actual past. After the Crisis, there was no Superboy so, logically, no Legion since they were inspired by the idea of a superhero who was young, like them. He needed them to be around (I forget why) so he made a pocket universe where Superboy existed and matched (from our POV) the Silver Age Superboy's world. In real life, this was done because no one at DC could think of a way to keep the Legion around in a new timeline without Superboy. If they had known a new version of Superboy was going to come along in the '90s things might have been different. :) With Vadal Savage, he did change history because when the heroes first get to Earth (before they figure out what happened and how to fix it) the present day was ruled by Savage and Batman was part of the resistance. They were unaffected because they were protected by some kind of energy or something from what they were doing (it has been a while so I forget what it was but they explain that is why they weren't affected by the timeline change).
@NoJusticeNoPeace
@NoJusticeNoPeace 5 лет назад
+Non-Ugandan Knuckles It's exactly what Batman chillingly hopes for at the end of the episode, that the pocket universe _ceases to exist._ That's what differentiates pocket universes; that they have no alternate versions of themselves. There's just the one which branches off at a specific point, artificially created through conscious screwing around with time and causality. When the League stops Vandal from winning the Second World War, the pocket universe he created just pops like a soap bubble. I'm not just blue-skying this either. We know from Dark Nights Metal that the Dark Multiverse works this way, that entire universes just poof out of existence when they're too badly malformed. +Chris McWilliams I might be misunderstanding, but what I got from it is that the entire Legion timeline starting from Superboy on was its own contigious pocket universe. Once the Time Trapper created the Superboy pocket universe, it branched off from the multiverse (and the orrery of worlds) and became its own singular, artificial reality.
@LibraGamesUnlimited
@LibraGamesUnlimited 5 лет назад
@@NoJusticeNoPeace It's been a while since I saw "Savage Time" but my memory of it was that it was an alternate timeline, that's why they went back in time to fix it instead of just leaving that universe for their own. If it were a pocket universe they could just return to their own and leave it as it would be self-contained and there wouldn't be any reason to undo it (especially since that would just end it in no longer existing). Typically a pocket universe is a physical location of its own (another dimension or universe, the pocket part indicates that it's a small universe to itself), while an alternate timeline is a branch from the main timeline (remember "Back to the Future 2" when Doc drew out the timeline and the tangent 1985, like that). The Legion/Superman story makes it clear that the Time Trapper was always moving the Legion to his pocket universe when they traveled back in time. In their own time, they were part of the main timeline but then they traveled to the past he moved them to that pocket universe. They didn't know any better because something called The Great Disaster (or something like that) had made knowledge of past history fragmented (which is why they thought there was a Superboy in the first place). In fact, they first discovered something was wrong when one of them, somehow, managed to travel to the real past (Post Crisis) and realized that the history was vastly different than what they expected (there is an image of one of them holding a newspaper with the Challenger explosion as the headline). Then they began to investigate and discovered the deception.

First appearance had him be ruthlessly methodical and having an interesting Freudian excuse, second appearance has him basically do what Puella Magi Madoka Magica's Homura Akemi did before that show became a reality, and his third appearance made him not only a useful member of Project CADMUS, but also a key sub-member of Task Force X, otherwise known as the Suicide Squad. Yeah, checks out why he's cool in his own way.

To be honest, the events of The Once and Future Thing, Part 2 should've been taken by both the parties of Batman and John Stewart and (out-of-universe) the writers with a grain of salt. There were too many time paradoxes and time shenanigans for anyone to blindly assume that John and Shayera would conceive Warhawk, such as: - Bruce really shouldn't have been able to see his older self in the future, since by traveling to the future he wouldn't have been in his own time to live the 40-50 years to become Old Bruce. Same with Static seeing his future self in Future Shock; - John being replaced by Hal, then coming back as John; - Wonder Woman vanishing in front of the group, and; - Batman, Lantern, and Diana simply appearing back in the present day, with the events of The Once and Future Thing effectively not happening in the first place. Instead, the writers and (in-universe) the characters in-the-know end up taking those events for granted, all for the purpose of manufacturing tension for the John/Shayera/Vixen love triangle.

Also traveling at speeds near the speed of light *does* cause the mass of an object to increase. What Batman said wasn't technically wrong, though he skipped a few steps between relativity and nuclear explosion.

I think your right about the whole idea of time travel not really being public knowledge. Even in the case of Timecode, the media just reports what his plan was, it was only Bruce, Tim, Virgil, Richie, and (later Terry) that knew that the machine worked. Even the way the reporter says, "...the future, of all places." really makes it seem as though people are generally dismissive of the idea. Nice video!

based on the comics the answer to who do i think invented time travel would be Rip Hunter in the comic books. But being that the TV show never introduced Rip Hunter I don't know. Even then it's kind of iffy if anyone else that isn't Booster Gold knows that the Multi verse exists because most of his time missions are done in secret. Question 2, what is my favorite time travel episode of Justice League: I loves me some Once and future thing. Also did you know that in the comics Booster Gold met Jonah Hex in issue 3. Do you think that The script for the Booster Gold show could be turned into animation? Has anyone mentioned anything,like any of the writers that you interviewed? I know you said that any thing is possible. I do hope that we will eventually see Booster's continued adventures.

That static shock/future shock episode made no since what's so ever. If he vanished into the future, that means for 40 yrs Virgil would have just been nowhere for 40 yrs thus making it impossible for him to have grown into his adult self.

He comes back almost immediately after he leaves (from Batman and Robin’s perspective), so he easily ages into old Static before his young self pops into that time period.

I always just assumed that the instances of time travel from before were either not commonly known or kept secret and the tech was suppressed to keep it out of the wrong hands. I mean, Bruce Wayne would (and could do that) and later the Justice League and others. I would also think that villains such as Clock King (the one behind the scene with Batman and Robin) would want to keep his tech to himself.

Addendum: with Time Code, it's possible that news reports made him seem like he either crazy or a con man and didn't really have the ability to travel in time. Note the way the newscaster said, "to the future of all places". The way she said it could mean that everyone thought the idea was crazy.

Wasn't there a episode of Static Shock the bad guy was using a machine to alter his perspective of time to give him what looked like super speed? He stole the devices from someone he was working for. Maybe that could have something to do with time travel?

5:13 I think he means that going fast results in kinetic energy (E) and E=MC^2 can be rearanged into M=E/C^2 meaning that more enrgy results in more mass. The more mass you have, the more density. If they were hit, all the enrgy would transfer but it can't become velocity since they're frozen. Having too much density causes you to collapse into a black hole, which would happen if they were hit. In conclusion, the only innacuracy is batman saying it would create an atomic explosion (it would be a black hole).

Uh, batman is right, "mass" does actually increase with speed but what i think he meant to say is "Inertial mass" instead, but no one would really understand what "inertial" is in such a show so they probably cut some parts out including the fact that E=γmc² where γ is (1/(1-(v²/c²))^0.5 when dealing in relativistic situations. And yes, at he gets closer to the speed of light crashing would indeed produce a pretty messy explosion, and nuclear fission or fusion could honestly occur. we've only got particle physics experiments to work off of though, no literal car to crash at insane speeds, so that is up to debate..

Messed up as it always is, at least the DCAU made great stories pertaining to time manipulation and time travel, which can easily rank well with live action films like the Terminator mainline duology, Groundhog Day, Primer, Predestination, and Edge of Tomorrow, video games and visual novels like Steins;Gate (which also has an excellent anime adaptation, with an excellent dub if one's into that... not that the original Japanese is inferior, it's just as great), Titanfall 2, and Terminator: Resistance, and other animated content like Dexter's Laboratory: Ego Trip (which should be the true series finale for that show, by the way), Samurai Jack, and Puella Magi Madoka Magica. In the meantime, I do also have memory woes with poor Dr. Wakati's name. At times, I even mistake his name for the Philippine city of Makati. 7:45: Just who precisely made that machine anyway? I actually asked a question about that on the World's Finest channel's release of that Gotham Girls webisode's comment section to hope for a nice answer to this mystery. Favorite episode: Not exactly true time travel, but Batman: The Animated Series' "Time Out of Joint" is a perennial favorite. Ah, if only the Clock King had the ability to do Groundhog Day loops to empower him, though.

I do have a question for you guys. Is there a reason you seem to ignore the comics like Batman Beyond/2.0, Superman Beyond, and Justice league beyond/2.0? I know that large portions of the Hush Beyond arc could be considered as non-canon, but this was rectified in later issues.

@Non-Ugandan Knuckles Do they mention this anywhere? I mean I know they have their own webcomic, but to ignore official media to prop up fanfic, even really good fanfic seems kind of odd. The official comics that are BRANDED BY DC as a continuation should be considered canon until said otherwise.

@ 5:25... so yeah... I am not even remotely a scientist... so this could easily be all bullshit so I apologize in advance... but what batman is saying should be right.. because the other cars are way faster then them... so hypothetically it would trigger an atomic explosion in their "time" but since they are out of normal time progression it might be such a short explosion that nobody else get`s detonated along with them? MAYBE? but actually that scene is wrong in and of itself... because they where slowed down along the batmobil so in the time they talk to each other they would drive at normal speed or at least it would look and feel like that for them... with the exception of everything else moving faster... but as always... time travel is confusing and hard to write... especially if you use a different set of rules every other time XD PS: yeah... I`m really not here to hear that batman is a crappy scientist :/ ... XD
