THE WORST JOKERS 

In Zack Snyder's Justice League, I genuinely believe that Jared Leto's Joker would give Batman a reach-around, given the opportunity.

Leto's Joker is what happens when you have a director who doesn't understand the character and when you give an actor creative control.

I'm a firm believer that YJ Joker was intentionally bland and unappealing because the writers didn't want anyone to focus on him or beg for him to come back

I think the "Kick Me" sign is really the only tattoo that works for the Joker.

I think the problem with Jerod Leto's Joker is that it wasn't written like the Joker, this Joker was written like a gangster trying to do a Joker impression without ever having seen any media that includes the character

I thought I was so smart when I thought this was going to be a fake out. I sincerely thought Jared Leto's Joker was going to actually be an imposter trying to ride off the street cred and power of The Joker who would be slayed by the real Joker maybe halfway through the movie.

My main problem with the Tattoos is that they are too simple and way too many. Joker always been (the good ones at least) about the show, the entertaiment. If he were to get tattos he would probably one of those Yakuza style back tats but like a big cartoon fish with a stupid smile, wearing a fancy hat and... maybe brushing its teeth with a batarang. Joker is a sociopath and a murderer but he is also a showman.

Leto wanted to be Heath Ledger so bad but didn't ever know what made Heath Ledger's Joker special, he tried staying in character off screen during production just like Heath but to him that apparently meant "send used condoms to your co-stars".

Instead of Joker breaking out of Arkham to commit random violence, he breaks out of Arkham to go to the club.

The most ironic thing for me is Jared Leto was the first actor to have the slender skinny body type of comic book Joker. He could have been at least visually a perfect adaptation, if not acting wise, but instead of sticking to the classic they thought they knew better. All you had to do was painting this guy green, white and give him a purple suit.

Letos joker is like if bat-boy from weekly world news took up villainy in Gotham.

I disagree about Lettos Joker needing a close relationship with Batman, not all Jokers do. The original goldenage joker didnt. He was a mobster, a gangster, I think they tried to do that. A modern gangster is what they tried to make him, unfortunately it fell flat on its face, Jack Nicholson already did the gangster Joker perfecty, I dont think anyone could do that version as well as Jack did. Also in the goldenage Batman was annoying to the Joker, which makes me think thats what they were going for.

I think if I ever wrote a Joker part for a larger superhero movie, I'd almost write him like the protagonist of a screwball comedy... Like every time we see him he's in the middle of some bizarre situation, and you ALMOST forget what kind of movie you're watching... Until he resolves his situation by killing someone.

I was kinda expecting the one from the 2004 series “The Batman” to be on here. Honestly, that one is probably one of my favorites for how unique he is. Usually the Joker is portrayed as a psychotic party clown, or just a psycho in clown makeup. What made that version unique was that he was a psychotic, acrobatic circus clown. Young Justice Joker is ironically funny to me because he always looks so confidence when he pulls out his knives to fight super heros. Who seriously thought to give Joker knives? I don't know how many people notice this but Joker is the opposite of Batman in terms of Batman has muliple gadgets on him at all times while Joker instead of carrying a bunch of weapons like to focus on a small list weapons a lot of the time.

This is really making me ponder on what makes the Joker seem like the Joker. Like, I would hand on heart swear that Cameron Monaghan's "Not-The-Joker" character from Gotham looks more like the Joker than Jared Leto's incarnation... but he doesn't even have green hair, or the name, and he looks Joker-like right from his first appearance. HOWWWWW.

I HATE joker throwing Harley into the vat of chemicals, I think that's so stupid. Now she's literally just a female Joker, vs a fan girl who was manipulated into falling in love, and now does all these horrible things just to impress him, out of crazy fanaticism to him.

Rest in peace Kevin, the best Batman.

The big problem? Joker was made to look sexy and edgy. They wanted to sell merch at hot topic and have young girls want a relationship like harley and joker. It was a gimic.

I feel like Leto was less playing the Joker and more trying to channel Alex from "A Clockwork Orange".

I honestly dont think Brent Spiner was that bad of a Joker. He wasnt homicial sociopath Joker, but his performance was good.

That last one wasn't too bad. It sounded like they wanted Mark Hamill but couldn't get him so they paid another actor to do an impression of him without prep-work and an hour to go through the lines.

I watched Joaquin phoenix joker and it scares me as it was based on reality. It felt so real watching it due to the world Arthur was living in and how his entire life is falling apart causing him to turn into this villain. It’s a good movie and unlike suicide Squad, a joker that is well written and executed perfectly terrifies me a lot. The more you go through trauma, it becomes funny as it’s a joke.

Jared Let's Joker doesn't feel like the Joker, he feels like a teenage boy who saw the Dark Knight once and made Heath Ledger his entire personality.

To be completely fair, I liked the idea of a younger, more wreckless modern age Joker. He’d definitely drive a lambo for sure, but they had a horrible execution for it.

The fact that they got Brent Spiner to play him in YJ... You have to have some truly terrible writing to make that man seem like he can't act. What a waste. Apparently the character designers were inspired to make him look like Lupin the 3rd. It really shows how much they thought that their inspiration ALONE would make it work.

What really sucks is that when you look at some of the concept art for the joker he had a different style originally that kinda had a mob vibe to him and he looked older and less over the top and more of a crazy man that had a reputation that spread fear.

I genuinely don’t understand what people could dislike about Richard Epcar’s depiction of the joker. (Other than his Injustice 2 design but that’s a dev problem.) His voice is just gravelly enough, he can be intimidating, but he still has the manic flamboyance. Also his laugh is my second favorite Joker laugh.

The Young Justice version of Joker absolutely seems like they were going for the Heath Leger version but instead came up somewhere _between_ the Heath Leger and Jared Leto versions.

The grills is honestly the only thing i didnt really hate. Because the implication is that hes fought batman so much that just all his front teeth have been broken/knocked out at this point

I think Jared Leto with a better writer and director could have worked as the Joker. The metal teeth never bothered me because I could totally see Batman punching Joker's teeth out.

I think what would have improved the portrayal would have been a post-credit scene where he walked into the shower, spit out the tooth bling, and washed off the tats. Then Harley walks in, sees his isn't permanent like her's, and she tries to kill him.

I will always ADORE the young Justice joker purely on his character design and art style. Drawing wise, he’s my favorite animated joker.

Nostalgia critic did a review on suicide squad when the movie came out and in the review Jim (one of the crew) was doing a bit where he was so inspired by jerrad Leto he was method acting as Jerrod Leto playing the joker. And I think this tiny bit in the video got the fundamentals of the joker better than Jerrod Leto and the entirety of suicide squad

Whenever I hear Vee Infuso talk about Jared Leto's Joker - I cant help but feel he is speaking my thoughts! The Justice League Snyder Cut Cameo... PERFECT! More or less... It certainly worked... But Leto's Joker was SO BAD otherwise... However, I am actually going to DEFEND LETO... As this is an issue that plagues Batman! It seems NO ONE can make a Batman Movie without JOKER or WITHOUT HARLEY QUINN... Batman has one of the largest Rouges Galleries of Any Super Hero - Yet every time a movie is made, JOKER OR HARLEY QUINN MUST BE REFRENCED OR APPEAR! And that's a major issue.... Take ALL THE SUICIDE SQUAD MOVIES... Harley Quinn is in all of them, She is in the games... She is PART O FTHE SUICIDE SQUAD... Screw the fact that The Suicide Squad PERDATES HARLEY QUINNS EXISTENCE PERIOD... Studios (Warner Bros.) are constantly playing Fan Service without understanding the property! While I have yet to watch it - Even THE BATMAN has a nice End Credit scene where a NEW VILLAIN could be introduced and everything seems set up for HUSH... An Iconic villain that MANY FANS, Including myself want to see on the big screen... BUT NO - ITS THE F**KING JOKER AGAIN! CONFIRMED... THE DIRECTOR CONFIRMED ITS THE F**KING JOKER! Give us a Joker who Lives, Who Batman refuses to kill, In ONE SINGLE MOVIE... Then have him be nothing more than a reference for a while, A Background part, Give us HUSH, PENGUIN, RIDDLER, FALSE FACE, THE MNAD HATTER, Then bring Joker back to the forefront... Having planned and waited and he was portrayed to have done in the animated "Killing Joke" Constantly throwing him and Harley Front and Centre to play Fan Service KILLS THE THREAT! It becomes teh thing the the Joker should never be... BOOORING!

Ledger's Joker's self analysis is also largely bs. Intentionally so. Like when he says "I'm an agent of chaos" and "do I look like a man with a plan?"... My guy, you are THE man with a plan.

I feel like they should make another Batman cartoon where joker starts out goofy but as seasons pass he should get more and more viscous because of him trying to make Batman break. Also make him smart I’ve yet to see him be the genius that he is implied to be most of the time

i like to think the idea was Leto's Joker was Harley's view of Joker. her twisted pov, she could never see joker's obsession with Batman. She thought he was just eccentric (i.e the tattoos style and etc). and also that it was meant to be completely obvious that she fell for something false

Leto didn't design the character, it's extremely near-sighted to blame the actor who just took a role that they were paid for for bad writing and character design. I hate Jared Leto, but the character's failure wasn't his fault.

For the YJ I think they made him mediocre because they have other major villains they wanted to go into and the joker here is just to remind us that he exists. Because everybody has done Joker and if they had writers on just him. They could fill an entire show with just joker interacting being an agent of chaos even against darkseid.

I genuinely hope to god that they cast Jim Carrey as Joker in the new DCEU. Not only does he physically fit the role, but he also has the acting chops to pull it off.

I love and hate Young Justice Joker. His saving grace is that he’s better than Jared Leto and he is just insanely weird, but still he’s fine. Probably because, as you mentioned, he reminds of the Joker from the old cartoons/Silver Age.

For what I ve read about OG Joker he was just another villain fighting Batman with and over phuns nowadays that Batman is so serious, yet fighting a mad clown is something that has to have a balance. Joker and Batman just cant both be all about darkness or phuns. There has to be a balance

I can't really hate Leto's Joker because the character barely did anything. He wasn't even the focus of the movies he's in.

Joker as a criminal mastermind is actually a relatively recent development. For a long time, he was just an impulsive madman who just wanted to kill people and get attention. He wasn't anything like Leto's Joker but he also didn't do everything for a reason. Hell, the death of Jason Todd was a spur-of-the-moment decision because someone delivered a tied-up Robin to him and he only realised after the fact that Batman would 100% kill him if he caught him after that.

Just the concept of any version of the joker standing still for hours getting dozens of tattoos is just ridiculus. He's a pretty versatile character, but the tattoos just dont fit him. I think it would have been far more effective to keep the tattoos(not the exact ones Leto had cause they suck) but have them be scars. I think the concept of him staying up for hours carving these symbols into his own skin with a knife all night just for the sake of showmanship and pizzaz is far more in character, shocking, and gives far more insight.

While the movie may be a bit too weird overall and I understand the dislike for it, I loved the Joker in Batman: Ninja. He was just so animated and expressive, yet as seen in his final battle with Batman, he could be absolutely terrifying as well.

I still stand by the idea that originally Jared Letos joker was supposed to be a brain washed Jason Todd. Who snapped after his torture by the original joker, probably killed that joker and assumed his identity

Jared Leto's Joker just wasn't scary. He always struck me as Justin Bieber breaking bad. Joker should have a sense of menace, that if you get in his way or just be in the wrong place at the wrong time, he might rip off your face to make a point or as a punchline. This Joker, he feels like if you got in his way in Columbus Ohio let alone Gotham city, they'd find him laying face down in the city's sewage treatment pools.

Leto's interpretation for me felt fake, forced, unnatural, and overall a disgrace to all the Jokers before and after him. If the Joker was gonna have tattoos: they would be messy, chaotic, incoherent, filled with noticeable scars and stretch marks. If the Joker was gonna wear anything: It would symbolize his chaotic nature, but make him look like a Joker. Leto wore tattoos that the Joker would never realistically have. He wears the most generic outfits imaginable. His laugh isn't sinister, scary, ominous, or even creepy, just flat and annoying, like he was going for The Simpson's Nelson laugh. And him giving a crap about Harley? Seriously, none of the Jokers really cared about her, they ALL saw her as a useful idiot tool, nothing more. Leto's Joker felt more like it was designed around Harley's fantasy than anything else. The arrangement of the knives scene: All I got from that was "Really?" Him breaking into prison to rescue Harley: For 1, Joker would never do that. For 2, he wouldn't dress up as a guard to get in, he'd level the place. If anything, Leto's Joker is the sanest but most seemingly desperate for attention interpretation I've ever seen. And the most crucial bit that Leto seriously lacked is that the Joker while very clearly insane, always has something dark and humorous that tends to have words to shake the foundations of reality & morality, whereas he just sounds like a moron spitting random words hoping something will stick, like a failed actor.

This is the first take of yours i disagreed with. I like Young Justice Joker. I think the issue often arises when they add Joker in with other DC characters thay have powers. Joker works best in more grounded stories, but i didnt think his inclusion or portrayal here was all thay bad. He isnt really a main villain, he is a side character in the show

DC’s problem with the joker they made him too obsessed with Harley Quinn and not Batman. The role of joker was always to abandon harley because his true love is Batman.

The only, and I mean ONLY thing I like about this Joker is that for once, he exists solely to serve Harley’s story. Since in every other piece of media she’s in, Harley only exists to serve the Joker and his story. In this case, the Joker needs Harley to exist for once, and it’s a huge breath of fresh air

All these Jokers suffer from bad writing/dialogue, not the performance, not the visual (except for Letto's), and not the setting.

I think the reason the YJ Joker was so bland was to keep people from wanting more of the character. If you were to take the best depictions of Joker and drop them into YJ, they wouldn’t fit in at all. All the best YJ villains were schemers with complex and very human motivations. Joker is a force of nature; he’s chaos incarnate. Thematically, he doesn’t mesh all that well with that show, which is why he was never more than a B-tier villain in that ‘verse.

The Injustice Joker sounds like an old leprauchan stuck in a nursing home.

Letos joker acts more like black mask from the animated stuff like under: the red hood. If we put a black skull mask on and took off the grills bros literally him. But he would also be a cool black mask for like a live action arkham origins (spoilers black mask is joker in that sorry). Id say her really did have potential but multiple factors really just cause it to no longer be "the joker" and more like you're average gta 5 roleplay character

I feel like Jared Leto’s joker is the Borderlands version of Joker. Also for how much shit he gets and how easy it is to hate it, but I am happy to see you can appreciate some of the portrayal’s characteristics

The other Jokers are mid but to me Leto is atrocious not only because of how cringy and forced it is but because of the SHEER overconfidence Jared Leto had in his shitty portrayal of the character.

I was SHOCKED when you said Kevin Pollack voiced Joker in Injustice, I even thought the same before you cut to an example, he does amazing impressions. If he was trying to impersonate Richard Epcar's performance from the game? That answer would make total sense.

There is one silver lining about Jared Leto's Joker: It was received so poorly, it became a roadmap for how not to do the character. Without it, Joaquin Phoenix's Joker might have become some ridiculous spectacle as well.

I've always had this androgynous look as Leto, but in my case it was a real fuel for bullies when I was growing up. I embraced it, used it to my advantage in my acting / modeling career, I was almost the face of Leon in these new Resident Evil games :) To anyone who's ever been a victim of hate / violence because of their appearance, gender, orientation, race : DO NOT ever let a hateful notion 'there's something wrong with me' sink in. Trust me, it's a recipe for self hatred and compulsive anxieties later on. When we suffer and we need a break, it's only natural to think: maybe if I was like everyone else I would be accepted. No, haters will always find something else to prey upon.
