@@kyorikusagami84 dc is supposed to be dc, dark is not a keyword for DC. And comedy is a part of life, nothing wrong with it except when used at inappropriate times
@@rjk537 No, I meant to say "not speaking for myself". I prefer animation over love action more than not. My original post was an attempt to get my opinion across without speaking for everyone else.
i love that james spoke on how much clark actually enjoyed saving people and his small town farm boy goofy charm he had...thats something i love in clark...james defiantely gets it
I hope he is able to capture that and translate it well to the big screen. I really love those guardian movies but Superman is not one of these goofy eccentric characters he is used to putting in these movies and I hope he stays true to that and does not just have him and jimmy Olson screaming at each other for 2 hours.
I remember having no expectations watching "Into the Spiderverse". I walked out of the theaters, turned to my friend and said, "I think that might have been one of the best movies I have ever seen." Such a great film. Fingers crossed for the sequel
@@adingdingdiiing6740 you’ll see that the second movie is gonna attain all the success at the box office that the first one should’ve. The hype is huge.
James Gunn is a gift to comic fans around the world. He is just as passionate and caring for this material as we are, something a lot of directors/ producers miss
@@antona.1327He takes what makes them great and enhances it. They still look and feel like the source material, but he puts his own spin on it. He doesn't destroy the core, he makes it flourish. Not to mention that he's adapted character almost nobody cares about and made them popular and beloved. Gunn doesn't miss.
@@sabrina63 not necessarily. It makes us respect him more because it’s not really a safe awnser. A lot of directors would fall into the trap of just picking the classics as “their favorite” because they know it’ll please the crowds
Yeah and people are saying that he's gonna destroy Superman and make him goofy. James Gunn looks like he's respecting the character of Superman in the comics, but hopefully he doesn't include the MCU family in that movie because I want to see a fresh new faces in the DCU.
Guardians 2 forever. As a stepdad myself it's a great example of what you're willing to do for your kids, even if they aren't your blood. You would (and in some ways do) give your life for them, because that's real family.
Would you also put a bounty on your kids if they didn't pay you their debt? People seem to forget that Mr. Gunn is a terrible writer and he loves to not follow on his own BS.
Seeing this reinforced my faith in Gunn. Clarks playfulness as Superman, him really wanting to help people, he fortress of solitude. Also coming off Snyderverse I feel like Superman Legacy is going to make the DCU really explode.
These recent press videos James Gunn has been doing really show how appreciative but also confident he is in all facets of comic book films, DC really hit the jackpot in hiring him
I didn't know they had hired him. That is a big win for them since they'd been mostly floundering ever since they brought Zach Snyder on board. Since he has an appreciation for animated movies, maybe he will push the DC animated movies more.
Into The Spider-Verse really raised the bar for how comic book movies could be. No doubt Across The Spider-Verse and Beyond The Spider-Verse will brake barries even more.
Adam Warlock’s flying sequences in GotG 3 are 100 percent James Gunn dipping his toes into Superman. I’m very excited to see what he does with the DC universe!!!!
@@fellowcitizen Mario Puzo is credited as the writer of Superman, but his script was thrown out. Puzo didn't know how to approach the material, as most people didn't know how to approach fantasy characters back in the 1970s. It was really Tom Mankiwez and Richard Donner that wrote the script. Watch the special features and listen to the audio commentary, it's clear Mank wrote the movie, along with Donner.
How james gunn never got to direct a Deadpool baffles me. Hes a perfect fit for the character especially sinces hes great with humour, story and knows how to handle violence in an entertaining way.
choosing history of violence and oldboy is yet another reason why hes goated. I felt some cronenberg influence in vol 3. Its easily my favorite mcu movie and im excited for superman legacy
Yeah there was definitely some Cronenberg influence with the High Evolutionary's body horror creations. But what I think is even cooler is that he used it to make us feel bad for the creatures rather than just plain disgusted, because they were made to exist like that without any say in the matter
The fact he gets who Clark/Superman is… makes me smile. He isn’t just big muscles and superpowers. He’s what humanity should look to emulate. And he believes we can attain that.
The best thing about James Gunn is that he's a comic book fan, he knows how to make great comic book movies because he makes movies he'd want to see, and thus, movies we'd want to see
As a comic-book fan who actually grew up reading Marvel and DC, let me reasure you: NO. If you think what he did to Ronan, Ego and Adam Warlock was what any comic-book fan wanted to see, you are not a comic-book fan yourself, and therefore, shouldn't be listened to.
@@antona.1327I agree with you but it is ironic that you have a Dark Knight profile picture considering those movies jacked up a lot of characters too. Bane, Robin etc.
@@antona.1327LOL speak for yourself. Just because they change characters to set up the stage for a better movie doesn’t mean comic book fans are gonna dislike it. Just stop 😂 It’s not even their full character arc yet. Adam Warlock is literally a baby as well.
James Gunn has shown tremendous growth as a storyteller in successive volumes of the GOTG Trilogy, and I can’t wait to see his next venture called Superman: Legacy. ❤🚀
So accurate too. Huge props to JG for having no shame in admitting that he’s elevating an animated movie because the story, heart, and execution is all present in it, when I could see pretentious directors sticking to live action cinema
I'm just loving the fact that he worked for Disney/Marvel for over a decade, currently running Warner Bros. new DC cinematic division, and put a SONY movie as his number one. Love it.
huge respect for picking into the spiderverse as his number 1 film i absolutely love that movie and it really shows how beautiful films can be in animation
You can tell Gunn is a student of not only film but comics. He knows this stuff because he lives this stuff and I look forward to his takes on Sups's world.
I’m interested in the Scott Pilgrim anime that’s being made. The cast of the film is coming back to voice their respective roles. I enjoyed the film, but the second half pales in comparison to the comics (which hadn’t been written yet at the time of production), so I’d love to see a more faithful adaptation.
Glad James released something personal so we can gain insight on who he is. If James can make the new supermen movie with homage to the original, we’re going to be in for an epic film
Hearing Gunn praise Donner's Superman gives me so much hope for his Superman movie. I love Donner's Superman so much, and if Gunn's film can capture even an iota of that magic, it'll be amazing.
Gunn chose really cool movies, and explained his choices well! It can't be forgotten what a huge impact the Donner Superman film had on a whole generation. Christopher Reeve was an iconic figure, and wow, that score! Still gives me goosebumps.
into the spider-verse undisputed goat of comic book movies. Easily my favorite i’ve watched probably 100 times. Nothing embodies comic books and feels just like reading a comic book. They made a completely new story and that proves not everything needs to be “comic accurate”
Superman is one of my favorite superhero films because it proves that not every superhero movie needs to have an epic battle to end the story. In fact the ending is so full of life and it felt grounded because it felt real with accidents during an earthquake. And not to mention how brilliant Christopher was as a charming, strong, full of life, caring, person who believes in kindness that isn’t givin back by most. I love that film.
He’s a brilliant filmmaker, it’s really neat to see his career flourishing and he’s going to fix the DC comic movie universe. I’m excited to see what he does.
I actually wish he was going to fix it. Seems more like he's just rebooting. I'm sure hisDCU willl be great. But, when he first got hired, I was really looking forward to him putting his spin on the stuff that was working... but, oh well. Still excited.
The fact that he said Margot Kidder as Lois Lane was practically the heart of the Superman movie makes me feel no worries about the direction of the DC Universe with James Gunn at the helm . Kidders Lois Lane had that sense of wonder a person should have when first speaking with Superman .
Such a relief to hear Gunn's appreciation for Christopher Reeves' playfulness in the role, after suffering through so many movies with Snyder overlaying Ayn Rand's pessimistic shite philosophy onto Superman's ethos.
Gunn is probably the only director that doesn't have a bad comic book movie. Trully a great mind, that understands the medium, understands super heroes like no other!
James Gunn does has Great Taste in Movies and you can Feel how True and Passionate his Words and Experiences are,He’s a Rare Gems that Truly Loves Comic Books and is Irreplaceable,I have Hope Now More than Ever he can make a Great Superman Movie.
GQ thanks for giving us insight into the thinking and creative processes of one of the most influential figures in the present and future of comic book cinema! Given his emphasis on both HBO MAX animation (CREATURE COMMANDOS (2024) animated series) and upcoming live action films for initial theatrical release (SUPERMAN LEGACY (2025), etc), his words here will no doubt be scrutinized and analyzed heavily! Thank you James Gunn for doing this interview!
I absolutely love that he's a comic nerd and has a deep love for these character's I have faith that he'll fix the dc cinematic universe after what snyder did damaging the brand
Great list. Glad to see A History of Violence getting some respect. The scene when he’s driving to confront his brother and you literally see the change in him cemented that movie for me.
Nice that he mentioned the Fortress of Solitude set, designed by my gran’s cousin (John Barry), she used to baby sit JB and loved talking about him. I was lucky enough to hold the Oscar he won for Star Wars at a family party back in the day but didn’t have a clue what it was at the time :)
YES! Into The Spider-Verse being Number 1 just shows how Awesome James Gunn is! I Love The Guardians Movies so much and Vol. 3 was everything I wanted! I'm so excited to see what He does with DC!
Hearing James Gunn talk so lovingly about SUPERMAN THE MOVIE really makes me look forward to seeing what he's going to do with the character. Gunn just gets it.
James is just unabashedly roasting recent Marvel movies like Endgame and Quantumanium with his comment about multiverses. All of Guardians 3 itself is an entire roast of Disney, with the High Evolutionsru just being a representation of Walt and the larger Disney Corp.
Great picks! Love the respect given to Cronenberg. My list would be Ghost World, American Splendor, Road to Perdition, A History Of Violence, and The Dark Knight.
Just watched "Guardians Vol. 3". It was terrific. And it was great to hear James name drop "Dead Ringers" which I just discovered. I'm sure he'll make a great Superman movie.
