James goes back and discusses the impact that creating Guardians of the Galaxy had on his career and how ‘allowing himself to give a s***’ was a large catalyst to its success.

It is so refreshing to listen to a filmmaker, and even more surprisingly a studio head, talk about how storytelling is the most important aspect of filmmaking.

What? The most popular thing to do with Superman is explore the Evil Superman themes. Most directors look for his flaws
@netzach21
@netzach21 17 дней назад
And they look in the wrong places because most directors, like the general audience, only know the character from the Christopher Reeve movies, and now the Syner movies. And there are a lot of very good modern stories of Superman in the comics, but people in general don't know them
@Lt.Lickit
@Lt.Lickit 15 дней назад
@@PreacHDefiantnot necessarily. He can have “flaws” that he can learn from. Having a flaw while trying to be a hero is way more important than just evil. Since the hero has to focus on how he can do good without causing some type of harm. And since the hero is also trying to prove that people can be better. Where as an evil Superman most likely will not think twice before doing something he thinks is right. The problem with that is that he is an evil Superman that has to be taken down by other more than a hero does and most people see his ways as well, evil. Which will make it much harder for people to accept him. Evil Superman doesn’t learn, he realizes at the end when the damage is done. Hero Superman learns along the way and doesn’t cause as much damage as an evil Superman would. And with him having flaws that he conquered, he will have a much easier time getting people to accept him.

James Gunn *is* a kind person, and I saw it happen once. He was at DragonCon one year, I believe soon after GOTG was a hit. He was scheduled to show up to greet fans one day, and the crowd was huge, including my daughter who wanted to see him. Well, as it happens, he was two or three hours late for a variety of reasons that were not his fault. When he *did* show up, he stayed till he had talked to everyone in that huge line, showing everyone respect and was the nicest, most energetic "celeb" there. I stood off to the side watching the room, and it was obvious that everyone there to see him mattered to him. Incredible, and humbling. I marvel at that to this day.

@@chaost4544 Yup. Personally, when I look back and remember his version of Lex Luthor, I see a character that finally found a friend only to see that friend get all the attention from his father that he wanted and that festered resentment. So, the relationship between the two was them navigating that minefield (that was filled with other hurdles and issues) and ultimately finding that while they would never truly be friends (as it first seemed like they might be) there was at least respect that developed between the two.

If they could get a person like Bryan Cranston's Walter White as a Lex Luthor character, that would be the template for a great Lex Luthor. The smartest man in the room, three steps ahead in every way, not afraid to do what needs to be done to get his plan done and that ego that knowing he is the only person who can truly be equal in villainy as Superman is a hero would be great to see. Or just get Bryan Cranston....

@@pkrmkn31nyder very clearly didn’t understand the characters. Just as he didn’t understand Watchmen. The entire comic was against the fetishisation of superheroes, about how they’re all fucked up and do terrible things, and Snyder filled that movie with epic shots glorifying every single character. Granted, he did show some horrific things being done by them, but seeing as all the horrific moments he chose were integral to moving the plot forward, it’s hard to give him too much credit there. I’d recommend watching Patrick H Willems video on Snyder if you finally want to see his filmography a bit clearer!

@@ajuuvex4132 Man of Steel is overrated AF. The only thing Zack got right was casting Cavil for the part. That's about it. I was looking at my wrist for a watch that wasn't there about halfway through that movie. Having a young inexperienced Superman go up against evil Kryptonians in his first movie couldn't have been a more bone headed move. Making him kill the first real threat he's ever faced was also dumb. Pa Kent taking issue with Clark saving his peers in the bus accident goes totally against Pa Kents' character. Zack had no clue what he was doing with Superman, and it shows. He read a couple of elsewhere stories and haphazardly slapped them together. Like he did with all of his DC movies. Elsewhere stories are great because of how different they are from the Canon. But you have to build a proper foundation for them to make sense. Zack is great a directing action and creating cool visuals. But his storytelling skills have always been weak.

one thing that kinda gets me annoyed with him is that he puts a lot of sentences in the guests mouths. I guess Stern actually does the same thing. It kinda leads them in a way. Sometimes, I think in a negative way. It also causes guests to say "no, its more like X" which can ruin the flow in my opinion. I already had a lot of confidence in Gunn's vision for the DCU, but now I'm totally sold. He just gets superheroes. The man wanted to be a comic book writer, telling stories is in his blood. And that's what DC is known for, great stories. The games, comics, and animated series have a reputation for great storytelling. It's about time someone brings that great storytelling to the big screen. Make the movies for the fans, and you'll win most of the non comic book fans. Because you'll show them what they've been missing out on. It has never been a better time for a DC live action movie Renaissance since Disney has been releasing bomb after bomb the last couple of years. It's DC's time to shine again. Gunn mentioning creating a DCU bible for the rules of DCU like he did with Guardians was music to my ears. We will potentially witness cohesion in a movie universe, the likes of which we have never seen. Marvel did an amazing job all the way up to Spiderman NWH, but then dropped the ball and hasn't been able to get it back since. But maybe. Just maybe. DC can pick up that ball and run with it. Now that they have Gunn and his team leading the charge. However, I do think Blue Beetle, being the first character in the new DCU, is an unnecessarily risky move. Gun had no hand in that, that i know of. Therefore, it shouldn't be a part of the new DCU.

He seems like a very interesting man and hearing his real feelings about chasing love based on fame and external accomplishments was an empty fleeting feeling and how he finally felt real love after being deconstructed and (wrongfully) fired by Disney in 2018 was some real shit. Michael I promise you ARE the best Lex. Not just for me. I see it on all my social medias. You captivated it in such way that in my humble opinion was better than Hackmans. By miles. You made a character that was supposed to be hated so so loved. I rewatch Smallville every year and I just can’t help but love and hate Lex. I love him because I know he needs it and that’s all he wants is love but I hate him for how he goes about things. You brought that to life. And I’m definitely fanboying here, but even my wife says that you’re the best of that entire series. Any other Lex that isn’t you is really just an imposter. Obviously I’ll give whoever James casts a chance but for me you are the definitive Lex Luthor. You have no idea the amount of people that truly love you as Lex. Okay that’s enough fanboying for now. Best advice from my experience, have fun with it and make projects with anyone you can near you. Make many short films until you are ready to make a longer movie. No ego, just looking for the good ideas and to try to make something good. And then not taking it personally when people don't like something - it only means they didn't like that thing, not that he's a failure or they didn't like him. re-watched Justice League and Unlimited, and this show with James Gunn reminded me of one of the episodes. It was where Lex Luthor and Brainiac combined with that nanotechnology, and after flash defeats him by going faster than he ever has before, he starts to fade into the Speed Force. And then it is the most overly corny dialogue imaginable, The Flash says that he has to go now as he talks to Diana, she does the emotional no scream, and then Martian Manhunter is doing the clothes dies of his hand out saying that he could still feel your presence and that you're not gone. The way it was all put together just makes me laugh every time with how classically corny it is

I think something that a lot of live-action interpretations (particularly in film) that they miss about Lex Luthor is that he resents Superman for what he represents to humanity and how he's idealized. He believes that humanity should not put its faith, trust, and hope in this incredibly powerful alien from another planet. They should rely on themselves to solve their own problems and lift up their own species to achieve its true potential, and holding up this extraterrestrial on a pedestal as an ideal for humanity to strive toward hinders that. Lex himself is a successful executive and is an extremely intelligent human, so he sees himself as an example of the potential that humanity as a whole should strive to achieve, so there's a personal resentment that this alien is being put on that pedestal when he believes that he, as a paragon of intelligence, ingenuity, and success, belongs there more.

As a humanist, I also believe that us humans should rely on our own capabilities to solve our problems and improve our societies, and not just put someone on a pedestal just because they have massive power. "Might makes right" is a morally bankrupt idea. That said, Superman can help, especially in emergency situations. Yes, humans can and should improve things, but ultimately that shouldn't mean you just let someone die in an accident when in that moment you have the option to save their life. People don't appreciate Superman just because he has tremendous power, but because he offers help, he saves lives. Lex believes that he belongs on that pedestal more than Superman, but he is wrong. He is rich and powerful, but doesn't act for the betterment of society, nor does he seem to care for the well-being of people. He sees people as disposable tools that he can use to achieve personal power. Someone who really cared about people's well-being wouldn't commit the atrocities and criminal activities that he does on a regular basis. Lex is a corrupt businessman and at times politician, who doesn't care about things like fairness, human rights etc., and whose purposes seem to be to have power, rule others, and humiliate anyone who he sees as a potential threat to his status.

Getting to talk to James Gunn is certainly a big get! Michael Rosenbaum, Lex Luthor in Smallville and The Flash in the DCAU, chatting to the Guardians trilogy director and DC Studios co-head - what a combination!

Hearing Wally West (The best Flash)/Lex Luthor talk to James Gunn about Guardians of the Galaxy and Superman: Legacy is the most bizarre thing ever. And I'm loving it.

This was a great interview. It’s always good to hear JG, but even more so on a personal level and some of the behind the scenes stuff that we don’t hear about

Anyone concerned about Gunn heading DC should watch this, he clearly has passion for great storytelling and will likely do great things

Being a writer and a DC fan forever, I'd love to work with James and thr new DC team to make DC as big and epic as it should have been years ago. Love that James works with newbies that other big studios would, thats how you find that "lightning in a jar" formula.

Coincidence that the Superman (1978) poster is placed on the wall right behind Gunn?

Yeah. If you look at other episodes of this same podcast, that poster has been there for a while.

I really enjoyed GOTG 3. Not sure what James' vision is for the DCU but I hope he changes his mind about Michael as Lex. It would be great to see him return to that role. He really was the best Lex Luthor.

He never directly said that Michael is not getting the role so who knows. We will have to wait and see.

I know people are upset about the SnyderVerse but there’s a reason a majority of his plans were scrapped and he was eventually replaced simple reason being they didn’t make much and didn’t even fit in a universe anymore, I believe James can fix all that carefully with his new 10 year plan, he’s extremely knowledgeable with comics and film making and loves what he does, he’s made incredible films/shows that performed extremely well in the box office and had great storytelling, also this whole thing with the Flash Movie that’s all Snyder and he really had no part in Flash, have faith in this man I have no doubt the universe will all fit together and the films will be fun and enjoyable
