This song was so ahead of its time. It will probably go down as the best Christian rap/alternative song. The message still connects to people 25 years later.
I got saved during high school. I was a Satanist and a drug dealer at my high school. And I got invited to a ministry group that didn’t judge me for having hair down to my shoulders and earrings (this was back in the 90’s)… I got radically saved!! And this album helped me through so many questions. I have since gotten a degree in education and a Masters degree in Apologetics… and have been blessed to help hundreds of people come to know the Lord. Thank you for sharing your faith. It’s been a blessing to more people than you can genuinely know!!
Fun Story: When I was a kid growing up in the 90's, me and my brother used to play this song on the juke box every time we went to Pizza Hut. There was this one dude that worked there with long hair who would jam out to it every single time we played it. If you're still out there Pizza Hut Jesus freak and see this comment by chance, keep on rocking it dude. As for me, I still rock out to this song every time I hear it. Proud Jesus freak here.
Many years ago I was your typical rebellious teenager and some friends invited me to a youth teen church event this band was playing at. I was never religious back then but on that night I got saved and have never looked back. I will always remember that day, thanks to this band that helped me see the light.🙏
Yes! Also one one of their later albums, it wasn't as good as an album as this one was as a whole but one of its songs was beautifully done. If my memory serves me correctly I think it was called Red Letters.
@@skilz8098 I think the Supernatural album is underrated. Songs like Dive, My Friend So Long and Supernatural are all top notch songs. Red Letters as well. Kevin also has a spoken poetry track at the end called Treason at Sea.
I just introduced my little brother to this song. I was first introduced to it by a teacher in elementary school by my favorite teacher. He was just as moved by it as I was.
Remembering Toby Mac and his family as they mourn the tragic loss of their firstborn son and brother. May the God of all comfort sustain them during this most difficult time.
Don’t be afraid of being a Jesus freak. this world will end but if your a Christian you will live forever with Christ. Hold fast even thought trials may come, pain is temporary but God is forever.
WOW!!!! 63yrrs old grandma here. Been searching for tunes about Jesus, but most are not my cup of tea. Haha Then suddenly this cool tune finds its way onto my phone! Love it! Thank you. And I will be sharing this with ppl.
Upper room is where Christ had the last supper. Upper room also means your head. So saying nothing much left in the upper room, they're saying he's kind of dumb
I'm totally a Jesus freak, a prodicle son who is on fire again after being saved in 1990. HE WILL finish the good work HE started in you until the day of Christ Jesus, God ALWAYS keeps HIS promises! I'm a living testimony to that!!!!! Praise Jesus!!!!
In 1995, DC talk came to Cape Town, South Africa for a concert. I was a kid and went along with the youth group. Half way through the set they let us know that they wanted to try something a little different (as in a little different from their hip hop stuff..love is verb etc). They proceeded to unleash this tune. It went off. Pandamoium broke out ( in a Godly way) and we (like David) danced before the Lord with all his might, sans the priestly garments. What a track....
Not to pick nits, but I believe David danced around in his underwear... I'm pretty sure his wife wasn't happy about that either, as she said he was making a fool of himself. 😂
I seen them live at 6 Flags Great Adventure in Jackson, NJ around 1995-96. This album was the biggest hit going on. Then Jars of Clay released their self titled album another good hit and a year or two later Skillet and Newsboys came along. And Petra was also at 6 Flags that day. There was a third group and I'm not sure but it might have been White Heart or something like that. Great times!
My favorite group of all time. Toby was always my favorite, love Michael and Kevin’s voice is a true gift from God. It was a big part of the signature of their sound
This is one of the greatest albums of all time, and I don’t even listen to a lot of Christian music. All their voices are great and unique, and the instrumentation is top notch and extremely catchy. The fact that a “boy band” used real instruments with amazing musicians is a feat in itself. They managed to make a Christian album that spoke to the masses, and you can truly feel the lyrics. They’re not shy about being Christians, and also bring up issues of race and culture
Separated, I cut myself clean From a past that comes back in my darkest of dreams Been apprehended by a spiritual force And a grace that replaced all the me I've divorced I saw a man with tat on his big fat belly It wiggled around like marmalade jelly It took me a while to catch what it said 'Cause I had to match the rhythm Of his belly with my head "Jesus Saves" is what it raved in a typical tattoo green He stood on a box in the middle of the city And claimed he had a dream What will people think When they hear that I'm a Jesus freak What will people do when they find that it's true I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak There ain't no disguising the truth Kamikaze, my death is gain I've been marked by my maker A peculiar display The high and lofty, they see me as weak 'Cause I won't live and die for the power they seek There was a man from the desert with naps in his head The sand that he walked was also his bed The words that he spoke made the people assume There wasn't too much left in the upper room With skins on his back and hair on his face They thought he was strange by the locusts he ate The Pharisees tripped when they heard him speak Until the king took the head of this Jesus freak What will people think When they hear that I'm a Jesus freak What will people do when they find out that it's true I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak There ain't no disguising the truth What will people think When they hear that I'm a Jesus freak What will people do when they find that it's true I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak There ain't no disguising the truth No I ain't into hiding People say I'm strange, does it make me a stranger That my best friend was born in a manger People say I'm strange, does it make me a stranger That my best friend was born in a manger What will people think When they hear that I'm a Jesus freak What will people do when they find that it's true I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak There ain't no disguising the truth What will people think When they hear that I'm a Jesus freak What will people do when they find that it's true I don't really care if they label me a Jesus freak There ain't no disguising the truth What will people think What will people think What will people do What will people do I don't really care What else can I say There ain't no disguising the truth Jesus is the way
"Until the king took the head of this Jesus freak" That part gives me chills every time. Jesus said we would suffer for him, but that shouldn't stop us from being a Jesus freak. Love it.
Hard to fathom the how someone who was behind a song like this would years later come out identifying as a socialist and anarchist believing in a "universal Christ".
First time I heard this song I had to replay that verse a few times. Peaked by ear the moment they sung "by the locust he ate", that they are talking about John the Baptist
My husband just took our 11 year-old daughter to see TM in Hartford. She came home and promptly added this and several other songs to her playlist. Love that he's still reaching people after so many years
1993 was the year. The contemporary christian genre didn't exist. This was played in the mainstream top 40's radio stations. They won several dove awards and in my opinion amongst the best contemporary christian artist. Them and Jars of Clay and The Newsboys.
2020: No shame...no regret...no fear of this wicked world through the hope and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ...the Light of the World. Hallelujah He has set me free. Who else?
Why are Christians against abortion? God loves abortion. He's all for crushing babies heads on rocks and killing children with bears....shouldn't you try to be like god?
Truth. And when you're a Christian, you are a freak to the lost. The preaching of the cross is to them that perish, foolishness, but to those who believe, it is the power of God unto salvation! Proud freak here.
This is the most blasphemous and wicked thing I’ve ever seen. If You’re into this please I encourage you to repent and pray and ask the father to forgive you and bring you out of deception
idk bro, harmonically speaking it's pretty out there. Jumps around the key center quite a bit while also coming in context of the song with a batshit crazy tone. It is pretty dog gone impressive... Not complex or hard to play, but wacky and dope as nuts.@@brandonthompson8413
I listened to this song when I was a kiddo waiting outside in the car for my mom to hurry up her last few mins of work, and at 37 I still listen to it! Jesus freak all the way!
My birthday today just turned 59😊 praise our Holy Lord Jesus!! blessings glory honor power might dominion be to the Lamb who was slain! He is worthy!!!❤️❤️❤️
I'm not even a Christian nor have I ever and have followed them since Nu Thang album and went to concerts and still listen to this day to DC-T and all solo albums etc......my point is talent is talent and there's no denying that!
@@Peaslepuff I'm curious: I myself grew up in a Christian family, (and I still consider myself Christian now that I'm an adult,) which meant that I gained the knowledge to understand biblical references pretty easily. My question would be, do you understand most of the references made? And if so, by what means did you learn about those things? (I pretty much only hear about that type of stuff in Christian environments so I'm curious how it works from your perspective)
@@rubikvoncube3583 I grew up Christian and understand the references made. Probably the same way Christians do? For me it's from church, Christian school, bible studies, and reading the bible at home. Since I became agnostic (around 15) I have taken 2 college classes on the bible because I enjoy learning about it and its history. Existing in such a Christian culture, even if you're atheist you still interact with Christians a lot...just by hanging out with your friends. I think most people in the US have some percentage of Christian friends
@@Peaslepuff HI, I just wanted to share this bible verse with you. Psalm 14:1-2 (KJV) The fool hath said in his heart, There is no God. They are corrupt, they have done abominable works, there is none that doeth good. I hope you know how much God loves you!
I love this song! Me and my dad where in the car listening to one of my many Tobymac CDs .... My dad then pulled out a D.C talk CD and said "this is Toby too!" My new favorite
Back when Christian music was unafraid to actually be catchy and good. This really had the opportunity to chart wider, it didn't make the faith too suffocating in it's music, it could actually reach out to others and at the same time it could be actually good and pleasant to the ear. That's how you get people interested in the faith, not making it suffocating.
Unsure if this ever got on places like MTV or such, but the video for this is very well made and definitely could have reached a wider audience. I enjoy that, need more creativity like this in modern Christian music. It's gotten too soft and lost it's edge. You won't be able to win people over without having a edge, if you're so smooth you're a sphere, no one can latch onto the message.
@@nattiedraws I heard that this, along with "Colored People" and "Between You and Me", got as far as featuring on mainstream music channels. Must've spoken their language, man! 😊
Our freewill to choose is a gift from God our Creator. We use our freewill and choose to be a good samaritain to everyone we meet. Even the homeless person deserves dignity. Showing others the pure agape love of Jesus is how we help others see Jesus alive,,, because we are followers of our Living Loving MerciFULL God Almighty,,, and if we say we are disciples and followers of Jesus,, then we are the examples of Jesus to others. Remain blessed and joyFULL in Jesus our living God!🙏🌈🙏
The truth is, bands like dc Talk scared the seeker friendly church and after a while, they just fell off the charts. This will always be one of my favorite groups of all time. They were extremely gifted and anointed and I pray bands like them make a comeback.
Im 22, about to turn 23 in 4 days. I love 90s-2010s rock. Where was this song when I was a kid! Im just now hearing it today from a friend (She's Jewish Messianic, im Christian). I'll be binge-listening to this one for a good while! This song has so much meaning. In seeing a lot of fights, misunderstanding, turning away, etc from non-believers in my life and this song fits so well. Me and my friend are Jesus freaks despite all the resistance and bullying we've tolerated. Still trying to learn everything I can about Jesus/God/The Bible that has helped me learn so much in the past year or two. ✝️✝️✝️
Trying to learn everything about the infinite One that's funny. I'm still getting revelation @ >67yrs young. He give u the things relevant to who u you are & what His intended your purpose for you is
@@nunyabizz8516 If it did, that shows how simple minded the religion is. No evidence, no good rationale...just people saying others should repent and they go "durr okay" lol. It just shows how susceptible people are to anything. It's why people like the Food Babe exists...just say surface-level statements and you'll have somebody somewhere buy into it.
@@JaneMoon_6 DC Talk was never that good. lol They were just a really cheesy Christian rap group. This album they decided to Rock more. Their best Album for sure.
Greatest Christian Alternative song ever written... The ultra-resonating sound of Kevin Max still slices through till now... the true GOAT of the Era... Ever classic
I Have to say back in. The 90s we all thought Dc Talk was the greatest thing ever and we thought they were a sign Christian music was going to get even better . But no , after they left Christian music fell into shambles . They’re not even trying and DC TALK REMAINS UNDEFEATED AS THE BEST CHRISTIAN BAND OF ALL TIME !
well I have disagree. I think Christian music was good all the way 2000. I remember hawk nelson . Elevenseven was petty good and forefront of neon pop punk. DC talk is likely the best post grunge band of all time. what Unique about Christian pop punk band that where innovated and sound truly their own. When I make rock music I can cite influences form Christian pop punk bands. as for dc talk I am not sure what bands cite then as influences.
As far as production and songwriting goes, this song is so intricately and amazingly designed. I will stand by my bold opinion that this beats out the sound of Green Day. The guitars, the samples, the verse melody and organ. Geesh these guys were talented dudes- amazing they used their genius to make killer Christian music that still devours the rest of the genre.
Told the family the truth about my call to serve Him. When they heard how, they rejected me- like those who rejected Him on golgotha. Pray for me and my mission all you generous children of the light as i will pray for you!
My brown uncle Tait shook my hand a few years back at a newsboys concert, what a real dude. Thank you for your music guys! Only cared about me at the moment, not a single second focused on himself. That is one sign of a real Christian man.
Guys, I can remember “DC Talk” playing on a loop in my babysitters little yellow colored car when I was only a little boy. Who would have known it would’ve stuck with me all these years later? Thanks “Kim”. Best babysitter ever.
“You see the Pharisees tripped when they heard him speak, until the king took the head of this Jesus Freak.” Is he referring to John The Baptist? Because he was beheaded.
We need more heavy Christian music, I know a lot of goth/punk type ppl that could be saved with this music 2 years ago I was one of them then I got saved and since did a 180 and do this song has been a favorite of mine
@@joshd.godfroy4761 oh man, Carman! I loveddddd him too. It was a revolving music fest between Newsboys, DC Talk and Carman when it came to Christian music.
As a young Believer of 26 years of age I'm always on the search for new Christian Music artist to listen to like Colton Dixon, Danny Gokey and Jamie Grace. Yet, the soul always comes back to what originally ignited the spark that the Holy Spirit breathes into a Flame that makes us burn for God. As a child going into my pre-teen years I heard DC Talk and TobyMac singles on the radio and 'Jesus Freak' is one of the songs that really made me bold, passionate and unashamed for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. It's because of the old school music acts like DC Talk, Petra, Steve Green, White Heart, Amy Grant, Hawk Nelson, Newsboys (Peter Fuller), Switchfoot and Third Day that I am the Christian that I am today. God really can capture the heart with his mysterious Grace and music is truly a powerful medium between Heaven and Earth that draws the hungry yearnings of Humanity to the broken Bread and spilled Wine that flows from the cisterns of Jesus on the Cross, satisfying the cravings of the Human heart. Music is a Universal language and God is a cosmic entity whose love is eternally Universal.
Ryan Sinclair if you´re trying to find something new, try Skillet and POD, these two are also Christian bands and man, they really have balls.. very powerful and also quite hard music, with God inside.
Ryan Sinclair - very prolific you are. Thank you for sharing your faith. You are but a bit older than my youngest daughter who also entered the pre-teen years with DC Talk, Newsboys, and the like. And yes, music is a Universal language and God is a cosmic entity whose love is eternally Universal. I do hope you don't mind if I quote your last line on my page. Thank you!
This is my favorite song of all time. It was my first exposure to Christian Hard Rock music. I'd headbang in the car with my dad EVERY TIME it came on, which wasn't often since it was one of those "throwback" songs by then.
This Song makes Such a Statement!!! I just learned of this group and started hearing all of these songs from DC talk when I first got saved in the 90s when I was 16 they were one of the very first Christian groups that I ever first heard of. I loved their music still do! I labeled myself a Jesus freak because of this group I went around telling everyone I was a Jesus freak!! Everyone thought I was Crazy n thought I was making too Big of a deal out of ut!! Well if I was , THEN TOO BAD !!! I was a JESUS FREAK THEN , and at 45 yes old im.Still a Jesus freak!!! There's Nothing Noone Can do about it!! I Will Always B r A JESUS FREAK !!!!❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
