I just introduced my group to DC20 and in that process I made some test characters, with one being a gnome/fiendborn being basically a little poison imp with wings. The character creation is a huge thing for what made me want to try DC20 with all of its awesome choices and the relative simplicity of it all. Look forward to seeing the flavor added with backgrounds and such. Thank you for all the great work so far! ❤

"All spellcasters have 6 mana, all martials have 1 stamina....then there's a Spell Blade." What?!?! You can't just drop that with no other context! Details, my guy. Details!! Haha. Seriously, keep up the amazing work you're doing! The system you're constructing right now is something that solves almost all of my concerns about the current D&D system in place, and the fact that you're earning enough to work on it full-time means I know the finished product is going to be spectacular.

@@TheDungeonCoach Will there be a "spellblade" or gish type of class in the final product? Something close to the Bladesinger Wizard, but it's own class? I've seen the tables for martials, casters, and half casters, but wondering specifically about that sort of class. Benjamin Huffman made a fantastic homebrew called the Magus, so I'm just curious.

@@TheDungeonCoach And another question: Standard array is +3, +1, 0, and -2. Point buy method says you start with -2 in all attributes and get 12 points to add anywhere, up to the attribute max for level 1, which is +3. Point buy actually puts your stats higher than standard array, because with 12 points, it takes 5 to get one attribute to +3, 3 points to get another to +1, and 2 points to get another to 0, and leave the last attribute at -2. That still leaves 2 points to spend wherever you want. Would it make it more even if you only had 10 points to spend? That way, standard array is equal to point buy, the same way in D&D, standard array is the same distribution of points as if you did point buy. Any thoughts on reducing point buy spending from 12 to 10?

For a game that is still in Alpha, it is very satisfying to run and easy to pickup and go if you have played other RPGs. Can't wait for the Kickstarter and the game in it's final state.

Hi Coach! Love all your guides to make DC20 more approachable for us. Would you consider a little change in character sheet and add to "phisical defence" place to write down shield and defence with shield. It would be faster for players to know their defence when for example they loose/throw shield in battle.

As a long time D&D player, this sounds awesome. I hope you also have an easy mode character making process to onboard newer players. Premades are very good for that, and fewer decisions are good as well. Perhaps having a simple character creation and a more advanced character creation process to choose from. Analysis paralysis will be a thing with too many choices for players new to the genre.

I would strongly recommend NOT using the roll method for stats in DC20. I tested it, and it and the results are wildly swingy. My advice: Normally, use standard array in DC20. If you are using the "Prime Cap" variant rule, use points buy in DC20.

With the ancestries rules, my character in a recent 5e campaign was a zealot barbarian who was slowly transforming into a celestial (her goddess periodically gets cut into pieces by her followers and the pieces are scattered, whichever of her followers collects the most pieces becomes her new avatar). By 5e rules I made her an Aasimar, but in this it seems I could start as a human and add Angelborn later.

Hey dungeon coach, I love your new system. Luckily I was able to convince my d&d group to try the alpha for a one shot, so i am very excited. Controversial thought, what if you lose all the instances of the word point in regards to mana points, stamina points, action points. In my humble opinion it would feel more streamlined and less gamey. Just a thought. How much mana do you have left? This maneuver costs 2 stamina.

First of all, congrats on your successful project. I will definitely check it out. We can never have enough systems to play with.😂 Your DC20 seems very much inspired by Level Up Advanced 5th Edition, which happens to be the best D&D version I've GMed by far. None of my players wants to go back. Every class has been reworked, and all martial classes have access to maneuvers. Not to mention you choose your ancestry, with their gift. Then your culture, background, and destiny. Teamwork is rewarded, nothing is overpowered, and they have an extra class called the Martial, which is a support non casting class. Keep it up.

Freakin' awesome!!! Excited to playtest this with my group. Noticed 2 inconsistencies within the free PDF offered from the website (as of the date of this comment) Please let me know if I am just missing something! 1. Character Creation Guide states "Save DC: 14" (page 90) compared to Save DC: 12 (RU-vid Video) 2. Mana: 6 at Level 1 (RU-vid Video / page 90) compared to Mana: 3 at Level 1 (various spellcaster tables)

My one and only (minor) criticism of DC20 is that "spirit", "presence"(like Daggerheart) or "aura" would work better flavourwise than "charisma". That would leave a more broader interpretation for character traits and also make a bit more sense as your prime attribute in terms of both martial and spellcaster classes.

In 0.7 (I don't see a video out for it yet), on page 90 (the character creation section), the Barbarian's defense is still described as "Barbarians = 8 + CM + (Agility or Might) + Prime", whereas the class description and changelog use "Barbarians = 8 + CM + (Agility or Might) + 2".

I'm still torn on the skills, tgey kinda feel messy and a bit overcomplicated, with some being uber useful and others situational at best. Knowledge skills feel like they're subpar discount skills. What if *nature* was a proper skill that combines natural knowledge, survival, and animal handling? What if history was turned into *society* skill, combining historical knowledge with knowing laws, culture, and languages?

Hey here’s an idea for an interesting optional rule: Sense Agility influences Physical defenses and Might Health, maybe you could have a mystical health stat influenced by intelligence while Charisma is used for mystical defense.

I remember making a D&D type game and stats were SPECIAL inspired. With primaries values and secondaries (derived) stats. Took anyone 3 minutes to make a character from scratch.

The skill maximum reminds me of Pathfinder first edition which is a good thing. ^^ In first edition you would also put points into skill ranks and you could distribute them however you liked but a skill couldn't exceed your character level. So far the system looks easy to understand and rather nice, I'll have a look at the kickstarter.

I love the concepts. However, I'm a huge Charisma nut in 5e and it bugs the crap out of me that you tied intimidation to might. What if Iade a threat to someone saying ill rain fireballs on their hometown if they don't give me a 5% discount on my potion purchase? Would I roll intimidation using my might modifier as a Warlock who DUMPED might?

How is d20 numbers less confusing than d10? D10 systems have less to none base numbers to add into hit points, stamina, mana. Getting rid of constitution, how does one make poison, disease, elemental resistances? Without wisdom stat, what determines fear/charm resistances? How does prime and awareness simplify perception verses wisdom? Spending one knowledge gives you another knowledge? I don't follow and confused.

I am guessing that if you roll for your stats, it is d6-3 to give a 3 tops and -2 min, so you might want to mention if I am right that not everyone may have a 3 in their prime stat unless there is a safeguard for this.

The rules lay out how to protect against that problem when rolling. However, I still strongly advise against rolling for stats in DC20. Use standard array or points buy.

As stated, be very careful with rolling for stats because your character can very easily be handicapped against the rest of the party and every monster and encounter they come across that relies on prime.

This game has some of the best modularity I have seen Some of the beast men traits are some real body horror type stuff You could run a biopunk game. With that rule of levelling up and gaining ancestry traits... becoming more monster than man @DC coach are there any plans later down the road for survival mechanics?

Really excited about this game just because there’s some pretty unique stuff here that I have never seen elsewhere and I love reading different systems. Really appreciate the design here, in my head canon it’s the next step in AD&D design just like how pathfinder branched out from 3.5/4e, it’s building entirely around the game not just borrowing some stuff from it or going in a whole different direction. I’ve nothing against systems that go in different directions, I just think this development process is also hella neat.

I am 110% for more system options in the hobbyspace as well as toppling the particular entitled giant in the playground. In good faith, though, what I'm worried about with DC20 is that during the process of simplifying and removing legacy messes, you seem to have added _different_ bothersome complications along the way. "Pending legacy messes," if you'll forgive my gentle cynicism. You guys have a small team but a lot of steam so more power to you. May you not become the next monster to defeat down the road. :)

@@kymaeraa8631 :) A very fair question. Right now DC20 seems extremely concerned with pointing out the (valid!) flaws in D&D5 and saying "we simplified that bit." Sounds great in principle! Generate a list of common grievances, figure out a way to streamline or bypass them, hype and profit! But it's still making its own new weirdness. Here's an example you were asking for: I like combining Strength and Constitution into Might. Makes sense. Why ditch Wisdom, though? That stat has its own distinct identity from Intelligence and Charisma. Was it to create a 2/2 symmetry between physical and mental stats? Why not combine Intelligence and Wisdom into "Wit" or similar? But then this Prime attribute abstraction is put in as an attempt to skip over any multiclassing stat complications and we're sort of back to six attributes anyway. Not exactly a simplification then as much as a trade-off. Also my muscle wizard is somehow using his six pack for better perception rolls. What? That's where they really started to lose me. I could go on but I truly don't want to disrespect the effort that's been put in here. At minimum the marketing savvy has been very impressive. I'm honestly happy that people are still enthusiastic about new stuff in the oversaturated market. I just don't want the hopeful glamour of a "D&D killer" to wear off and then people will end up frustrated with DC20 for all new reasons, y'know?

@@ZenArkayne "Mind" would definitely work as a better term for what they're going with than "intelligence". I think might as a prime attribute on spellcasters works a lot better if you think about it differently. Instead of muscles, try thinking about it in terms of magical might. The caster is brimming with pure overflowing magical power coursing through their body and uses that to enhance their senses, physical prowess and spell power. In this way you could even have a scrawny old man wizard that can punch like a gorilla through their magic reinforcement

@@kymaeraa8631 Oh, definitely, you can narratively justify anything. That part isn't a problem; I appreciate the flavor flexibility. It's cool to offload part of the creative process to the players so they'll feel more invested and satisfied. Buff wizards, nerdy barbarians, charming druids... 20% dwarf/10% orc/20% halfling... weird options but _someone_ will want them so yay I guess. But then you've opened the door even wider for bizarre combos for DMs to endure. Sure, a DM can always say "No, that's ridiculous no matter how you spin it" but that generates other problems too. Blargh. Sorry about coming off as a downer. Maybe this open beta will help them vet the system into something less sophomoric. Fingers crossed. :)

Closest you have are Variant rules - one called “Ancestry Adoption”, which is limited to one trait, and one called “Custom Ancestries”, which is fully unlocked but reduces total points by 1

Kind of feel the languages should have 3 instead of 2. Broken, conversational, and fluent. Fluent is going to be required for things like reading ancient tomes written in the language; 2 is going to be enough skill in the language to have a normal conversation with a person fluent in the language, 1 is the broken kind of understand version of knowing a language.

Are there options to be a completely custom race? Lets say my character is a chicken of human intelligence. Could I not mix and match traits from more than two different ancestries to make the chickeniest feeling character?

There are rules for that, you just get 4 points instead of 5 and can pick any 0 point (i think), anyway it’s in the free rules

So what if you have negative agility? Your long jump is a back jump? If you do a vertical jump you dig yourself in the ground? And... no more paladins? Well, that's a sad new, I love paladins, one of my characters is a paladin. What is the spellblade? Can I find info about that class?

Jump distance is minimum of 1 😂 And the Spellblade will be able to do everything that paladin could do but in a better way that’s more of a CLASS than a paladin is. Paladins have too much “baggage of origin and sources” than I think is healthy for a class

As coach just explained, the paladin is still here but got absorbed and reflavored into the spellblade. You can still absolutely play the flavor of a paladin and channel your magical force into enemies.

I like the idea for the Knowledges, but basing skillpoints on a specific attribute (Intelligence of course) nah. We just got rid of that and happy for it. Considering that every class can prime any attribute, let's just all go with Int I guess. I honestly think that should get some more thinking. Maybe base it on the attribute stat for skills in their group.

*Might* gives you higher *Health Points* and is required for heavy-duty equipment *Agility* gives you higher *Physical Defence* and is required for stronger ranged weapons *Charisma* gives you higher *Mystical Defence* (alongside *Intelligence* ) AND *Grit Points* (Used to reduce damage taken or give allies ADV on saves, should be listed TBH) All skills _are_ also still boosted by their main attribute’s bonus, so going whole hog on *Intelligence* doesn’t make you a god at all skills

@@dnddude9652 all true but previous systems like D&D3, 3.5 and Pathfinder 1st, like many others have proven, players like their skillpoints. An DC mentions it himself when talking about attribute points in 5e, no-one gets them if you can take a feat instead, so extra HP or learn a skill that will above average go to the skill, same for any othwer numerical value that you add somewhere. One of the reasons of the proficiency system at least in my oppinion. Getting the skill is great, having to level them to stay on top, not fun.

I think the versatility of the race options is wicked cool! But I'm not satisfied with the fact that the bonus for picking one race is to choose a another racial feature later... I feel like that kind of ruins the narrative for the racial choice. Idk

Oh my god. I just thought of an amazing interaction.. So two players who can cast magic gain the same spell, but it costs 2 Mana... 😤😤😤 BUT WAIT! They both cast the spell together, using only 1 Mana each! And are thus able to cast a 2 Mana spell at level 1... MUHAHAHA!! I'M A GENIUS!!!! 😂😂😂

Dude. Blacksmithing is not governed by might. Why do people think blacksmiths have to have muscles. You have to KNOW how to forge metal. You don't even have to hit things with a hammer that hard. The weight of the hammer falling alone is enough. If you slammed the hammer down each time you would destroy your arm. Any craft skill should have Intelligence simply for knowing how to do it, and if you want to add Might for flavor then make it Might or Intelligence.

Doesn’t _need_ to have a negative, you could have 3100 stats just from Standard Array *and* still keep a maxed Prime Could even ditch the extra 1 stat using a -1 Ancestry to have three 0 stats

Strong suggestions that I would probably enforce regardless: Remove occultism as a skill. In a fantasy world, all beliefs are basically equal religion so I can't imagine what would be "occult" about people worshiping one *very real* thing over another *very real* thing. IE, "I worship fish people that walk out of the water once per year" vs "I worship a god that speaks to 50 clerics an hour" are equally valid "religions" because both are real in this fantasy world. If you want to have a religion be more obscure (occult) just impose a higher DC/SP. Also, remove the "blank skills" under knowledge. As a DM, I will *never* memorize my players' write-in skills and many players will either forget they wrote something or try to write the most abusive general skill they can ("I have a skill in 'fire' and how it acts and how to control it") Don't put the +3 skills by knowledge. Players love skills and they will just build INT (thanks to the PRIME skill factor) a vast majority of the time. Instead, just give 3 points that players can allocate to either skills, health, or physical/mental defenses.

The way multi-classing works is at second level and higher levels each class gets access to talents. Talents are basically feats and allow you to pull from a general list of talents, or you can grab a single class feature from another class. An example, you are a barbarian and love the idea of casting spells while raging on the battlefield. With your talent, you can grab spellcasting from any class. You would gain one mana, one or two spells and some cantrips.

I get that, but that's not real multi-classing. That's PF2 style "multi classing" which I detest. I want to be able to refine my character into essentially a unique class, and limited access to feat, spells, abilities etc. via feats at predefined levels is not that. PF 2 got really close to a classless system, but messed it up by having each class have it's own list of feats. I want a generic list of melee feats, stealth feats, magic feats that have raw spell casting or melee skills as prerequisites. Then I could build exactly the sort of character I want, one feat at a time. The old gama world rules in polyhedron magazine had just a single class that got a feat every level, and you could use that to build whatever archetype you wanted to. My dream scenario for dc20 is a full classes system, with "archetype leveling guides" that present a path to a particular concept like druid or barbarian, which you can either follow, or diverge from at every level up

That's a stupid argument because you can always add more to your character's backstory. Why not start at level 5? Why not 10? Starting at level 1 just means you start earlier in your character's story.

It's not about level, but about story. If my PC comes from a ninja school in a ninja village shouldn't he start with some ninja techniques? If he grew up among ooze tamers shouldn't he have a ooze companion from the start? But this stupid 3rd level subclass nonsenss forces the start from level 3 to stay true to my idea. Why do you think all other systems give the subclass at level 1?
