This episode made me realize that I’m only depressed when traumatic things happen to me. I was never born depressed, I had an amazing upbringing and was a happy child. What it comes down to is adulting, this shit super hard. I don’t take meds, I give myself pep talks and tell myself that everything will be okay. That's not depression then. Depression isn't conditional. People misuse the word too much. Depression is a chemical imbalance in your brain. You aren't motivated, can't focus, have no energy, etc. Stop confusing it with sadness. Someone who's depressed can't just snap out of it and it doesn't matter if everything is going good for them they'll still feel this way. A psychiatrist can diagnose it and prescribe meds to fix the chemical imbalance. Everyone has ups and downs, not the same as being depressed. What you described is just LIFE. I have bipolar Depression.

I'm a doctor (psychologist) and I REALLY appreciate the insight on how depression feels for you and others. Not enough people know what it feels like from the side of whoever is struggling. But KNOW, true friends don't consider you a burden. 🗣 LET THEM KNOW. Friends, ✔check on them consistently. Sometimes you gotta pop up when it's been a minute. Help them clean or cook for them. Show your love through actions. Depression will have you feeling numb. Our environments being beautiful and clean or smelling good HELPS! Bring something or do something that will boost their mood. Deep talks aren't always necessary. But anyway, thank you Mona!

Children are assumed to not have the emotional capabilities of adults just because "they're kids". Which means their problems usually get brushed off. In reality, even though their frame of mind is different, their pain should never be minimized. Lean into empathy, compassion, and creating a safe space for friends and family. If you can't personally help someone, suggest therapy (sometimes it's free, income-based or insurance may cover it)

I used to work at the Suicide Line & it’s not what Phelps think it is. They don’t play sad & depressing music or advertise it that way, because they don’t wanna trigger nobody. Now during certain holidays or major event, sometimes the wait is long for obvious reasons *BUT* most of the time, they’re available & even have a text/chat online option now (I think). Like Mona said, some people don’t have a support system so it helps to be able to call, speak to a neutral/supportive person (ideally), & get resources.

Yes Damona speak! You are doing the community such a service by keeping it 100. Yes finding the right prescription might take much longer than expected, yes it might take a few sessions with different therapists before you find your fit but you have to STAY COMMITTED. You have to advocate for yourself it is work, give your self a chance and stick with it. Sometimes you’ll find out that you didn’t even require medication you just needed counseling, for some meditation and more holistic treatments help. I cannot speak for those that have been in the fight for years with no avail🙏🏽 my statement is more for those who have yet to seek help.

This description of depression, so on point! I wish I could explain those feelings like that, but either way, it's so good to hear the experience explained

@dcmwg, you’re getting very good at this. I like the discussions with the team. I feel like everyone gets depressed at some point and it is recoverable, I think people either ignore or neglect their own sustainabilities which leads them into depression. This is why you have functioning depressed people who do amazing in managing their sustainability. They know their breaking point and don’t mess with it and apply their recovery methods when they reach breaking points. Glad this is being talked about

Phelps was making some points, even though y’all don’t wanna admit it. A LOT of kids nowadays have found mental illnesses as “trendy”. Plenty of them got exposed for faking it on TikTok for views, there’s merch for the “antisocial” kid, etc. It’s that niche to fit in. It just sucks because it takes away from people who are actually crying out for help.

I appreciate this episode. I contacted one the hotlines due to my teenage daughter being suicidal and they were very helpful. As parent, I had no clue how to handle the situation and wanted to make sure my daughter received the help she needed. I've personally had episodes of depression but didn't know how to get help in my younger years. Like you Mona, I still get in moods where I don't want to be bothered so I don't take calls or talk to anyone. I have learned just how important mental health is in my 30s but I wish I had more tools and knew how to access resources earlier on. Sorry for the long post and be blessed everyone!!!

What a great episode … at times it was embarrassing listening to that guy try to manifest his idea on what depressing looks or feels like . But glad he asked for people who don’t know. But thanks for the awareness . We need to know more and educate us more about depressing.
