Hey Guys, I have been getting a lot of comments to the affect of how are you guys so good at air to air refueling? Its so hard and I get so frustrated!
So I decided to make an answer to those questions today and I hope this video can help you out with making A2A Refueling a little less frustrating here in DCS World with some tips and tricks as well as advice on the mental game you need to play with yourself when it comes to the preciseness needed to refuel.

Yesterday I was trying to fuel my Hornet. I always fight with my aircraft. But I made some adjustments in my Saitek X52 curves making them less sensitive and yesterday I was able to refuel for about 10-15 seconds. For those who always ruin everything, it was a good night yesterday! Tonight I'm trying again... and again!

Well like I said in the video I really recommend making yourself a little mission, start-up, take off, fire your gun, drop some bombs, then hit the tanker. I think that will help you out just as much as the curves!

A great video with some excellent advice, I have been playing DCS for quite a while now and have avoided AAR for the most of it. I have recently been trying it on my own in the F/A-18C and have wrestled with it every single time, I have been tense ans have been staring at the basket more times than I care to mention. I'm not embarrassed to admit it, it is unconventional and a skill that not everyone can unleash at the drop of a hat. I will take your advice back with me and try it from another angle, Probe is one thing but boom will be quite another! I love DCS to bits as it is as close to being able to fly in the military as I can personally get due to a disability. Thanks for the advice it is greatly appreciated! Marc

@TheSkipjack95
@TheSkipjack95 5 лет назад
I like to think I'm pretty good at AAR, and I think you covered pretty much everything. First thing is to relax completely, then keep visual markers on the tanker aircraft, track those to see if you are moving relative to the tanker, and avoid chasing the basket at all costs. However, if you need to slide sideways or match the tanker's turn, do not roll, but use your feet. I know this can be a weird concept for the hardcore jet jocks, but the pedals are still useful.
@Spudknocker
@Spudknocker 5 лет назад
I have heard that advice but I very personally find that using too much rudder screws me up more than too much roll. But everyone has their way of getting it done. I've even seen guys split their F/A-18 throttles and use one engine for speed adjustments.
@HEATER_

I guess ergonomics of your desk height and controllers can play a part too. I was sitting lower than the height of the my desk which has the effect of "reaching for the flight stick and throttle" and made it very difficult to provide smooth inputs. Using a cushion to raise your height and or use the arm chair rests makes for a more comfortable flying position.
@notproplayer3649
@notproplayer3649 5 лет назад
Is it just me or engaging altitude autopilot for the fa18 while trying to connect to the probe makes it actually 10 times easier, the autopilot, after setting the altitude, makes the controls feel also more stiff and simple makes the plane more stable and precise feeling, if it's not the right procedure to use, I'd really want to know why cuz for me, I basically refuel like that all the time

Spudknocker, I think I recall you mentioning the grip-on-stick thing in another video...... it stuck; when it's a constant fight with the aerodynamics, it's kinda telling you that whatever you're doing ain't helping one bit. For more situations than we normally acknowledge, the magic is in "letting go"........ and in the fly-by-wire systems this is probably most accurate (mere educated guess, I'm astronomical units shy of mastering any of this...... yet).

Could you help me with two issues, 1st: Are you also avoiding roll inputs and use rudder and pitch only when very close to the tanker? (That was advised by the f18 handbook). 2nd: Are you using the modelled turbulences (whirlwinds) or is it "impossible" to refuel with whirlwinds? Gz from Germany.

I have been playing DCS for about 5 months now, ive got the hornet and the jeff, and I just tried refueling last night for the first time. I spent at least an hour behind the tanker and burnt half a tank of fuel trying to make contact and didnt even manage it once lol I felt that my approaches were really good, I would approach the tanker at around 10 knots, slow to 5 or 6 knots as I got lined up with the hose and everything would go well until that probe was like 5 feet from the hose and then without fail my muscles would tighten up and I would make two fast of a correction thinking I could catch it at the last second and end up having to restart the approach... Im really hoping this video helps lol

@@kballs94 yeah Carrier landings took me only an hour to master.After that,everything the computer tells you (youre too high,your too low) is complete bs to you since you already have the experience and know the angles to land it right Aerial refuelings are way harder.Especially with aircraft not intended for low speed.Something like a su33 is easier since you do air refueling at speeds way faster than carrier landing and is easier to control.You can also see the refueling boom from the cockpit while facing front.Allowing you to 'aim' the boom to the fuel pipe easier.Something like an F15C or Grinelli's F22 is hard since you have the booms rear of the cockpit (rear left in case of F15) My carrier landing : air refueling ratio for the flanker d is probably 110:1
@kballs94
@kballs94 4 года назад
@@vortex6818 Actually, I have personally found basket refueling more difficult for some odd reason. I think its mostly because of my instinctual habit to focus on flying into the basket and then suddenly having to shift focus from the basket to the refueler itself. Of course after experience you can get used to the position of the basket but I havent had the time yet. I found the boom to be much easier. Beneath the KC135 are these lights which tell you where you are relative to the perfect position to be within refueling. I believe I found it so much easier because the whole time I can focus on the refueler aircraft and keep myself in steady formation while the boom operator is also simultaneously keeping the boom attached. While the boom is a lot less lenient than the basket in terms of how far you can deviate. However with the boom, if you know what to focus on you dont need that much wiggle room anyways.

Thanks for the vid. IMHO, it would be nice for ED to provide an 'option' that simplifies AAR. Even experienced Mil pilots have noted that the lack of 'feedback' from the jet (in a sim) creates additional challenge compared to actual AAR. Also, hardware (dead spots/drift) and software (calibration) issues also factor into the difficulty. $0.02

This game is hard. My radar sucks and the enemy missles dont make any beeps plus my flares wont work no matter what I do. I just fly and explode.

Hey man, there is an absolute TON to learn. It’s one of the reasons why it’s hard to call DCS a game, you have to do a lot of learning before the sim makes any sense. For instance one small thing here is radar guided missiles don’t care about flares, only IR guided missiles do

@@Spudknocker I am getting very good at starting and takin off though! Lots of practice there. Im still missing some of the systems. Not sure what Im doing. Trying to learn the aim120c since I believe its the longest range missile and I want to keep distance but it isn’t working out so far. I can get them in radar at 40 mi but the range of the missile is only like 20. Ive also learned how to eject very well🤣🤣

@@chipburns4123 the better you can get your flying skills down, the easier systems will be to learn and eventually combat
