Why is the F15 called a superiority fighter? in this video we have a brief look at its ability to take on 6 migs in close combat and take them all out within a couple minutes.

Man!-- and a seriously awesome name, btw-- I just can't seem to get enough of your videos lately: This is the 5th day in a row that I've gotten home from work, and I immediately sit back and watch some very tactical dogfight action. Interesting/Boring note: I used to play a couple of F/A 18 Hornet "sim" games when I was waaaay younger, and now, watching how you do your thing with the Hornet (in your Hornet videos, obviously), I've had several "oh!" moments that take me back to when I was just a kid messing around on the older Hornet sim games , and I could never figure out just why a particular item or feature wouldn't work the way I wanted it to (learning about the differences in the radar modes RWS, TWS, etc. was a BIG revelation for me). Anyways... Awesome Vids, Mad Skillz, and yes, I too love the Breakdown/Overview at the end of the missions.

Really enjoying your videos, keep em coming. With that said, you should edit the title of your video. According to the Tacview and the armaments of these Migs, they were actualy the A variant and not the S. Im not sure about this but I believe that th A variant doesn't field the R-73 or the R-77 missile, which I believe would have made a big difference in the outcome of this engagement. Cheers.

As a former F-15 maintainer I cringe every time I hear over g. It basically meant I wasn’t getting off work that night and meant I’d be spending the next 12 or so hours pulling a jet apart and inspecting it. Oh and every dam screw and fastener would be stuck from the stress. The pilots used to have to bring us a case of beer and hand us tools all night when they’d do it lol. That was back in the late nineties and early 2000’s at the beginning of my career before the war against morale started in earnest.

Is popping off an AIM-9 in the midst of set a flare drops a viable tactic either in-game or in real life? Whether that was your actual intent or not, it seemed like with at least two of your AIM-9 shots you fired it off in the relative middle of a string of 5 or 6 flare drops. It seems quite probable that if the other pilot is watching you go defensive with the flares he might not notice that you also fired off the sidewinder in the middle of all the flare. Piloting was not part of my Air Force duties so I don't know all that much about what would or not have worked in a real situation.
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 5 лет назад
if u mean firing ur aim9 at him while u pop flares while defending his heatseeker and he wouldnt notice the sidewinder come off you and head to him cuz hes watching the flares? the smoke from the sidewinders launch is significant enough for the first few seconds that he would deff notice it. especially if he had eyes on you.

I'm kind a so lucky that I can see these great exciting video almost every day. When I fly F-15 for BVR missile fight, I always feel awkward on targeting with TWS radar mode. Maybe my hands are awkward for that. When I finished designate some of the targets, They are coming very close and begin shoot at me already all the time. XD GS-san, do you have any good suggestion? Thanks always, katsu
@GrowlingSidewinder
@GrowlingSidewinder 6 лет назад
I had this issue when I was starting out, practice makes it easier, and also if theyre getting close don't be afraid to fire them like this video, launch authorization override and drop them like maddogs. just make sure theres no friendlies. lol. but ya its all about practice. it use to take me minutes to target with TWS now it takes me seconds. you need a good understanding of radar so you can pick them up farther away from you and thus give yourself more reaction time. thanks for the support as always katsu.

@denisbujoreanu5993
@denisbujoreanu5993 6 лет назад
why would you still rely on TWS in BVR? Even F-15 has a HUD feature to lock and shoot AIM-9s and 7s without pointing its microwave oven at the enemy. :) Not to mention that in BVR almost all other planes are at a disadvantage when it comes to lock and shoot compared to the SHLEM and the very off-bore angle the R-73 can look at and lock a target. But one thing I do agree with GS - overriding the launch authorization is a cool feature, gives you quite an edge. A human can predict I think a little better when a target will close the beam of a missile than most targeting computers. They're tuned for 90%+ PK (probability of kill) and that's just silly. In close quarters you have to shoot in the blind if you want to hit something. Pretty straight game theory: don't follow the rules if you want an edge
@user-mp8bz7sz2i
@user-mp8bz7sz2i 6 лет назад
Thanks for asking, Denis-san, In fact, I still don't know the eligibility of each radar mode. When I flew Falcon 4, I knew the velocity search mode is no good for a real combat. TWS is available in F-16, F-15 and F-18, So I just wanted to see if it's good or bad. As you said, long range radar mode may be not just practical unless you have a real 'fire and forget' missile like AIM-54. I think that AIM-120 is still not an all mighty enough for a BVR. You still have to fly ahead to the enemy for a while after shoot one and often you'll find yourself are getting in a vulnerable range while you are guiding a missile. As you say, if the AIM-120 or AIM-7 has that practical mode for real combat, you should use it. Some of the GS's video shows us that if your oppornent has a BVR missile equally capable with your AIM-120, it's gonna be ended up in suicide for both. 1:1 kill ratio is no good for real war. That's why US and Japan are going to pay a tons of money for stealth fighter. Wait a minutes, if the opponent is a same stealth fighter, you can't fire missile until opponent is in a visual range. Huum, you need a 20 mm in your pocket all the time. Again thanks for you comment and I'll try fight as you told me. All the best, Katsu

The Mig 29 has one of the worst combat records of any modern fighter and when it comes to it's radar and sensors, it is extremely outdated compared to US fighters. All that's nice and dandy but this looks awfully like shooting fish in a barrel, pardon my pun. You pit R-60 equipped Fulcrums against an Eagle packing AIM-120 to the teeth the outcome is not predictable but pretty much inevitable. Repeating what somebody asked already, how about putting some real missiles on those 29s, R-77s and R-73s for starters, just to level the field a bit. Then perhaps set them to expert or go against human operators. I doubt the outcome will be the same. Back when I had the time, I used to take a Flanker vs 4 Falcons set on expert, all equipped with similar weapons (77s for me and 120s for the Falcons) just so the odds were more realistic. And even if I'm not the fastest, sharpest, quickest or deadliest joystick fighter pilot the outcome was not always favorable to me. I used to get around 50% of the engagements to end with me the only one still flying. Now when I tried the same with 4 Eagles the trick was to get within visual range where the AIM-9s that the F-15 was spitting out were shooting wide and large, no match for the very tight turn radius on the Flanker. So, MADDOG, with all due respect since I remember somebody with the same nickname back when there was only a Flanker 1.5, you might want to clear things out on the above scenario, such as what were the loadouts on each plane, what AI settings were used, was this a first merge scenario or did that happen before. Not that it would matter much on the big picture, just that you stated without a doubt that this is why F-15 is called a superiority fighter which if I recall it wasn't the reason it was called so, rather because of its longer range radar, longer range missiles and jam-resistance which gave it the first-shoot - first-kill option in almost any engagements. Add to that the poor training on the opponents side and you would easily score all kills, no loses. But if you look at its main rival - MiG-25 and later on MiG-31, the F-15 actually proved to not be a match. It failed to catch its prey when it had a chance. So despite me still considering F-15C the "White Shark" in the USAF arsenal - a killer optimized for killing, it saddens me to say that when the push came to shove, it faltered. Just thought to add my 2c worth of critique, since you've opened the comments section. :) Cheers

The west freaked out because they thought the Soviets were making fighters going mach 5-6. When they actually got their hands on the planes the west found them to be hugely inferior. The Mig25 and Mig31 are both shit aircraft with no real utility. They are interceptor aircraft meant for taking out longe range nuclear bombers which are no longer a threat, as opposed to the F15 which is a purpose built air superiority fighter. The only plane the East has that can challenge the F-15 is the Su27, and possibly the new Mig35. And for the record, western pilots have always been better trained. Look at flight hours for Russian pilots vs flight hours for US pilots. Its why the West has always been dominant in aerial warfare since the end of ww2. Not to mention western pilots are the only modern pilots with real combat experience. I'd like to finish with this. When push comes to shove, the F-15 is 102 kills to 0 losses, the F-16 is 76 kills to 1 loss. Meanwhile the Mig25 is 8 kills for 8 losses, the Mig29 is 6 kills for 18 losses, and the Su27 is 6 kills for 2 losses to ground fire. It dont matter who you're flying against, that speaks for itself.

im not sure I totally agree with those stats speaking for themselves man, a lot of those causalities for the migs were middle eastern pilots that were poorly trained. i'm not sure it makes it a credible statistic for the capabilities of the aircraft. once the Berlin wall fell, NATO pilots flying the f18 hornet flew against german pilots who were expert mig29 drivers and they played mock war games where the mig29 scored a 1:1 kill ratio against the american Hornet. I'm not arguing what side is better. I'm simply saying it depends on the pilots abilities, and to judge a plane based on some stats from poorly trained middle eastern pilots isnt fair to the plane. we see the effect when the Iranians flew the f14 tomcat against all kinds of iraqi migs from 1980-88 scoring 159 confirmed kills against everything from a mig29 mig25 mig21 right up to the french mirage and super etendard. does that mean the french planes were also garbage? or is it possible the Iranian pilots were better than the poorly trained iraqi pilots? give those same iraqi planes to those German pilots and I'm willing to bet the tomcat pilots would struggle. again i'm not saying any of u are right or wrong, i'm just saying stats don't tell the whole story.

Hm...I have to give it to you, NATO pilots do get more training hours, not to mention the doctrine they employ is quite different from what Russians use. Remember, I'm from a form eastern-bloc country which is now a NATO member so I think I may have just a wee bit more info on how the training was done and which seems more adequate. But anyways, you do seem to compare apples with pears basically. The eastern-bloc doctrine was primarily defensive when it came to air force use on the battlefield whereas starting with the USAAF way back in WWII with their massive air raids both during day and at night (those were conducted by RAF mostly) which required large bomber formations escorted by fighter squadrons with lots and lots of amo and fuel for point defense against enemy fighters, it's only natural that after the war ended and the jet+missile came into fashion the same mindset to be kept by the, after all, winning side. Now if you look at how the Red Army employed its aircrafts, which granted were and still are somewhat inferior in terms of technology to their western counterparts, you'll see that they relied on defensive approaches rather than sending lots and lots of bombers and fighters to finish off the enemy on the ground. So now you have these two different doctrines and the aircrafts that were designed to enforce them going head to head and you wonder why there is such a difference in number of kills. This is similar to considering that a war can be won by air battles alone. Sadly, the last engagements from the US and their allies in different conflicts where they relied on air power to provide the decisive edge with or without the use of ground power shows that no matter how many JDAMs you drop on your enemy, no matter how many ancient or not so ancient fighters you shoot down there will always be someone left to come out and shoot a MANPAD and take down a multi-million fighter jet with the cost of, pardon my bluntness, a bunch of shepherds trained to operatean Igla. Costwise the more technologically advanced force loses on the long term. Wars are not about fighting fair or in a typical high-noon gunslinging showdowns. It's not the wild west, not anymore anyway. It's about killing the other side, simple and cruel as that. Another aspect which seems to elude folks who do west vs east comparisons is that officially there hasn't yet, and let's hope it stays that way, a full scale conflict between west and east employing all the conventional warfare weapons. There has not been a case of squadrons of F-15s, F-16s, F-18s, A-10s, AWACSes and divisions of M1A2 and Bradley IFVs going against an opposing number of MiG-29s, Su-27s, Su-25s, IL-76s and rows of T-72s and BMPs. If anything, the technological superiority that the west still enjoys in some areas has been negated by tactics on the opposing sides. In war it's not mandatory that the other side play by your rules- remember the F-117 shot down over Serbia in 1999 by a 50s radar which had no chance in hell to acquire a lock for the ancient SA-2 that took it down.. So throwing some stats about number of kills without even a shred of evidence from where those were obtained only to conclude that eastern bloc planes are crap, long live the western supremacy is paramount to ...well...childish stupidity... Yes, the west was paranoid about the soviets building super fast interceptors, that's why they wasted so much money on the F-15 and F-14 programs to begin with. Only to have their fears blown to smoke by the defector, Belenko, who landed that MiG-25 in Japan to have it debunked and stripped down to be catalogued as junk by western standards. Sure, when you compare it to your way of doing things it may look stupid. So was the way soviets built their space ships and stations. Now look who's hitching rides on the Soyuz rockets while the mighty space shuttles are history. Also when slamming eastern tech as junk, might want to read about how was the ISS first considered and what went on when it was designed and constructed. One thing that struck me was a statement made by the russian MIR program director when he learned that the US and UK spent over a billion USD to have a scale model of how the future space station will look like. This guy said: They spent a billion dollars for a model...If I had a billion dollars for my program...Oy, boje moy!!! And in the end I'll quote from a Tom Clancy book about air power: Two soviet tank commanders stop their tanks head to head at the base of the Eiffel Tower in Paris. They open the hatches and admire the view. One asks the other: Say Sash, do you remember who won the air war?

@@GrowlingSidewinder You are right in that generally speaking the pilots are more important than the actual aircraft, but when you have 102-0 K/D it cant just be pilots. Every once in awhile even the worst of pilots can beat the best with some luck. Obviously it is a mix of both skill and technology. For your example with the F/A-18 vs the Mig29, it would be important to add on that the F/A-18 is a multirole strike fighter built mainly for ground support and carrier cover rather than dogfighting. Meanwhile the Mig29 is a Russian light fighter like the American F-16. It was created with the sole focus being on close and dirty aerial dogfighting. It was not a strike aircraft. With this in mind I would say the fact that the F/A-18s got a 1-1 kill ratio was actually really good. In terms of air combat, the Mig29 is definitely superior to the F/A-18, which makes sense according to the roles they fills.

Mach number at low altitudes is above 1000km/h, so Mach 0.2 would be around 250 in your situation. You simulated an attack vs 6 Chad MiG-29s. All other nation's planes would have 4xR73, IRST with Helmet cue and 2 R-27, one R one T. Real life: 5:32 you would have had 12 R-27 coming onto you, 6 thermal 6 radar guided. 7:51 at least 3 R-73 and dead 8:05 definitely dead. Helmet cue on you, R-73 on the way. After 1990, they played with the East Germany MiGs and were depressed to find out how big the missile gap was. And how easy is to shoot down planes with the helmet mounted cue and off-boresight R-73.

Michael Withstand, no offence but can I have some of what you're on? The MiG-29 was literally designed as an inferior yet cheaper and more mass producible alternative to the Su-27 (which was purpose designed to kill the F-15A), it was basically their equivalent to the F-16.

The thing that gets me is the fact that the F-15 was first placed into service in 1976 while the Mig-29 was first placed in 1982. The Soviets basically had six additional years to make whatever modifications necessary to compete and (theoretically) outdo the F-15, and yet here in this simulation we see that the "older" airplane gets a 6:1 kill ratio. Obviously there are a lot of factors that go into the efficiency of the fighter plane (most especially the pilot), but I can't help but find it fascinating how balanced and well designed the F-15 is, even after all these years. Of course, I do believe the F-15 will eventually need to be replaced as technology improves (if it doesn't need to be already), and hopefully the F-35 and F-22 can somehow fill those shoes (and whatever else defense contractors have that's classified to the public). But, still, the F-15 is a work of art. Basically the American standard of what a superiority fighter is, and daresay the best fighter aircraft of the 20th Century.
