DCS "KAOS" MIRAGE F1 

The F1 is powerful cold war jet that due to the guys really trying to model the flight characteristics realistically, results in the thing being quite a bit of a learning curve to fly well. As an F5 pilot for a long time, this thing lets me build on top of that foundation and provides me fox1 missiles and tactics, a far superior air to ground game, recon ability on Enigmas as well as a challenging flight model to keep me engaged and feeling like I’m constantly improving in a new area. I guess it’s the reason so many Mig21 pilots just love that jet - it’s a challenge to fly well. I could never get on with it myself, perhaps I tried it too soon to staring DCS, but the Mirage has me hooked. It’s a beast and a blast to fly. Edit: And to echo the others, the editing you do on these is super crisp. And it’s always fun to try spot any montage clip moments 😛

For the NWS, when you activate it, you are in NWS high, there is a switch behind the stick that will put the normal NWS. It's still a bit...weird (at least for me) but it's still better than the standard mode

F1 is one of the best "early access" medules in DCS. Absolutly worth the buying, And please, let us remember is early access stage, even so, is great

Your cons summarized: Skill Issue In all seriousness this is a Cold War jet, it isn’t going to be as easy to fly as a F-18.

The operators of Mirage-F1 made a point of carrying only one radar-guided missile under the pylon under the fugelage for better performance. Whenever you fly a Cold-War jet there are quirks owing to the absense of a fly-by-wire solution. The aircraft's weak point is the low thrust-to-weight ratio. Make a point of having dropped the external tanks before entering a dogfight or a BVR encounter. Of course one shouldn't carry bombs along with air-to-air ordnance. The strong point of the aircraft is the high G-limit ( as compared with the competition of the era ) so a half-turn dogfight is its strong point at low to medium altitudes. Make a point of deploying combat flaps at low speeds. Before combat fly at the highest speed allowed for the altitude in cause and try to soar at 30 or 45 degrees gaining the altitude advantage against slower opponents like the MiG-19 and staying outside of their missiles envelope of flight. On the other side the best way to win the MiG-21 is the optimal manoeurering at the same altitude ( flat scissors when opting for one circle fight or gaining gradually, but slowly angle against it at the two turn situation )

You've been flying fly by wire jets for too long friend. I respect your opinion but I do not share it. This is, with the F14 right now, the most realistic jets in DCS in flight model. Fly by wire jets "correct" pilots inputs automatically that's why you're pulling so hard and loosing speed and stalling the engine. Fly more with it and it will show you the way. Happy flights.

Another great video! I've started learning the F1 recently and it's definitely full of peculiarities that sets it apart from other modules. A bit love/hate at the moment, but I'm enjoying the experience regardless. I do like the ability to fly for both teams depending on the map

Hey DTM I'm loving your videos, so cool edit and so chill. One question. I'm a new DCS player and I'm liking it, and I'm wondering if I should buy a Cold War aircraft as my first one. I know people usually recommended whatever you like the most, and I like the Viper only because it looks cool (I know nothing about aviation) but I feel that playing only BVR servers or similar will be a bit boring first and/or difficult. Also I like the ECW server and the new Tempest Blue Flash, I like the game mode Enigma and the team made, it feel more rewarding So yeah, that's the question haha

It is a excellent cold war era jet with good systems for the time. The quirky nature is something that is easy to overcome with practice.

I just purchased this jet and I could certainly agree that it has some learning curves. Compared to other cold war or earlier jets, it'll take some time to get used to.

Seems like you're to used to the planes flying themselves, not that there's anything wrong with that, not everyone has to be a fully blown stick and rudder sim pilot to enjoy DCS. But i think its a bit harsh to critique the module for doing exactly what it should, simulating an early jet without fancy flight stabilization. NWS: Yes it might be sensitive to you with your hardware, is that the case, simply turn down the saturation and give it a bit of a curve. It'll help on tipping the plane, which many others also do if you turn to sharply (F-16, F15 ect.) Also, you should always turn off NWS on the runway, that goes for every jet. For takeoff you only use the airflow over the rudder once lined up. Roll and pitch sensitivity is the same as the rudder, if you aren't used to raw dogging the air via manual control you'll most likely get better results with a curve. And yes you'll lose airspeed when yanking the stick un coordinated, but that's because you are forcing the aircraft to beat the air into submission rather than cutting through it gracefully. Asymmetrical load after weapons launch is a thing in every aircraft, you even experience it in a full fly-by-wire aircraft like the F-16. Just seems to me like you aren't used to trimming that much. You're fully entitled to not like the way it flies, or the older harder to use systems. Not everyone likes older cold war era tech, lots do though, as its more of a challenge. But please don't label it a a con for the module, developers spend a crazy amount of time and recourses, on fine tuning the planes to behave as closely to the real thing as possible..

I agree the Mirage F1 still has a long way to go until it feels as mature as other jets like the Mig 21. The performance issues in particular have been quite unpleasant. Hoping Aerges lives up to their great reputation and continues to support the plane.

OK - let's be clear - this is a Mach 2 interceptor, and a 1960's design for good measure. We love it because we (1) are often pilots, and so know whether the flight performance is realistic [check] (2) grew up with it and saw it flying hard[check], (3) Sat in it at least once [in my case], and (4) Because, like all Mirages, it is drop dead GORGEOUS to look at ! If you are good with the incredibly detailed community A-4 (and I am), then the F-1CZ is essentially like having a Mach 2.0 A-4 - and this is what makes it scintillatingly exciting. Its also like having a potent BVR F-86 Sabre or F-5E Tiger II. So, with all of this in mind, this is what the F-1CZ is all about The first time I flew it in DCS, it was the most natural feeling in the world, and takeoff, landing, and combat were butter smooth, and deeply pleasurable. You can do a lot with F-1, with practice - and this is the point ! Fly it for what it is, not for what you wish it was.

Just watched this. I just love the way the Mirage F1 looks. Esp the interior it reminds me of a tie fighter for some reason. So yeah I bought the module and have been enjoying it. Cant disagree with some of those negatives you mentioned. Really enjoyed this video.

I love your video quality and shots...really very well done. However, I can't agree entirely with your assessment of the jet. I am not a fan of French engineering, and I don't like the systems and how they were designed by the French on any of the mirages...however, they are effective. The biggest mistake I have seen when people use this aircraft in online servers, is that they think it is a dogfighter. This aircraft is a 1960's tech interceptor and strike fighter/bomber. If you fly it with that in mind, you will do ok with it. As a low level strike bomber for the time, it is excellent. The ability to fly to an ip and then switch to the target offset is very well done. As a fast hit and run interceptor it is also very effrective. If you try to dogfight it...well...you will lose a lot of energy quickly and likely get shot down, especially against any of the more modern aircraft. Your quibbles about how sensitive the controls are; well, they are sensitive. I flew 104 starfighters back in the late 60's, and most of the high speed aircraft of the time were very sensitive on the controls...but like aircraft back them, you could dampen the controls somewhat...and you can do that in DCS as well as in most joystick software. You simply have to get used to flying with a sensitive touch. Ham fisting this aircraft will likely cause you to lose control...which I have seen more than once online. Treat it with respect and taxi at slow speed, refine your controls and it's a joy to fly. To me, it's the closest to what I remember in feel to my trusty starfighter...although that was a much better aircraft :-) IMHO but I am a little biased on that. Give it another go with some of those considerations in mind and maybe you would like the aircraft more.

I personally love cold war aviation. So this jet appeals to me. The pitch does feel a little touchy. So maybe that needs to be tuned some still. But if your comparing this to any of the fly by wire jets it's going to seem really hard to control. I'm not sure if the wingtip missile is over done but it might be. That being said the F-5 also seems really squirrely with one missile. This thing was designed in the sixties and entered production in the early seventies. It's vary much a get high get fast interceptor. The U.S.A basically changed the air combat game in the immediate wake of the Vietnam War. And that is vary apparent when you look at this compared to something like an F-14A. As for why buy it that's up to the individual player. I for one am an aviation enthusiasts first and a video gamer somewhere later. For me jets like this are vary interesting because they represent a pice of combat aviation history. Also you really shouldn't be putting this up against the forth gens with exception of the F-14A and maybe the M2000C. The rest are mid 2000's jets. This is more in time with the Mig-21bis, F-5E, the F-4E when it comes out, and other like them. Luckily there are several late cold War jets planned in the next few years. When those come out its going to be right at home. The last thing I'll mention is the play style. Jets from this era have some decent radar, for the time, at least basic RWRs, and some countermeasures. But the missiles are more primitive. No HOBS, only the AIM-54A for a fox three, mainly the AIM-7F for a fox one. So you actually had to turn with your opponents. Not in some contrived scenario ether. But that was still actually happening on the regular back then. I'm fairly confident that once the late cold war is fleshed out a little better that the cold war servers are going to be really popular. So historical importance, though I would prefer an Iraqi F1, play style, and challenge are all the reasons I bought it, and will buy all the planned late cold war jets. I can't say the same for any of the planned or future 4th gens.

1. It looks like you tried to review a plane which you're not familiar with. 2. These plane is a cold war era. About '70. In the sky he met MiG 21. In DCS he's a competitor to MiG21, F5, AJS37. He's bettet than they all by far (maybe except of AJS). What's not to like?

NGL, your complaints sound like a lot of skill issues. And tune your axis curves to adjust sensitivity if you find the controls too touchy. The Mirage is a great jet.

The nose wheel steering isn’t on or off it’s normal steering and high sensitivity new. It’s even called that in the key bindings so you only really have to turn it on when taking sharp turns. Also a lot of your other complaints are just quirks of planes that take finesse and time to learn. You have made videos of the mig21 which flies much worse and is much harder to control and you seemed to enjoy that much more so I think you just need time to practice like every other jet.

i defo have an interest in the f1 but im not gonna buy it while its in early access, too risky to just watch other people play it, im gonna wait until its full release and then do the free trail for it.

What server are you playing on in this?

I though I'm the only one that single wingtip missile feels like you lost 2000lbs on one wing. and btw mirage f1 is my fav cold war jet.
