Hey guys! I really like this new map so far, its going to offer a very different experience from what we have available on any other map! I can't wait to see what missions and campaigns people come up for it!
I got watery eye watching the video myself. First thing I did was take a Gazelle from Saipan to North Field to see the pits where they loaded the atomic bombs. They had the glass covered pits and it was awesome to see they put that in the map. I flew around the island for a bit. Can't wait to start making the missions.
Glad to hear people are enjoying the map. I hopped in at lunch and my FPS really takes a hit anytime I go near an island. Down to 30FPS. I don't have that issue with any other map (including Syria). They mention some performance issues in the FAQ so I'm sure they'll smooth it out.
As an expat who have lived for over 14 years in Taiwan, I appreciate the shout-out regarding Taiwan. I've watched regularly as the ROCAF practice landing on the A1 highway (in the event of attack and their main bases are taken out), and it's exciting to see all manners of planes land and take off on the same roads I drive on. BTW - it's F-CK-1 (Ching-kuo or Indigenous Defense Fighter - IDF), not F1-CK :) These planes fly regularly over my home as we are in the flight path of Taichung Airport/Ching Chuan Kang Air Base where the IDFs are based. These guys regularly go into burner when they are overhead and it's awesome. I wish that ED or a third party would model the Taiwan-China-Japan region, as this is a main hotspot now. I really think ED is avoiding any backlash by doing Guam instead.
I mean that is the name of the country after all… the airmen risking their lives flying the supplies over the hump we’re flying them to the ROC not red China
My friend spent his early years living at Anderson AFB, his dad was a B-52 radar nav. Dad died last year - he'd flown on Linebacker II back in 1972 - the commies couldn't get him, but the cancer did in the end.
15:40 - Ammo depot, kept well away to prevent collateral damage if it was attacked and blown up. This is the modern era map and they will introduce a WW2 era map later. We need a real Viet Nam map, not some pseudo training area for Viet Nam. It will come about after we get the A-6, A-7 and the F-4 along with the A-4. We need several Japanese planes for WW2.
21:07 That track field is where my squadron would pt almost every single morning, rain or shine. The rescue swimmers would lead the pt, so those aren't fond memories. Agana International Airport is where I learned to fly a 172 and got my license. Made that cross country to Saipan three times, once solo. Andersen was the site of the B-2 crash as well. It happened while I was sleeping. Also, while I was there, a B-52 went down on Guam Liberation Day off the coast killing all six crew. Actually, there were several aviation accidents in the short time I was there. I'm just glad I wasn't one of them. We even lost Lt. Hescock. Crazy all the memories. Thanks for the upload!
@@TW-YenLin Everyone wants the 2000-5. RAZBAM are making it for training use in the French Air Force, so whether we get it in public DCS is ultimately up to France to decide.
Yeah I for one would like to know who the person or persons are behind the ED teaser videos are because they do GREAT work. The Super Carrier anchors away video comes to mind.
@@jasbonkers520 Yeah, he used to be just an independent video maker. But he got hired because (at the time) he was leagues ahead of almost anyone and also capable of making things quite fast.
I can’t wait to fly this map, my dad was stationed here in the 1990, and I could watch the training exercises from the cliffs. B-52 and B-1 streaking across the run way in mock bombing runs with F-15 on their wings. My coolest experience as an Air Force brat .
Marianas were part of Spain during long Time ago. In fact, their name came from the wife of Felipe II called Mariana. As well as the Filipinas from him.
@@Spudknocker Navy UDT (Underwater Demolition Teams) did pre-work clearing under water obstacle's, Coast Guard and US Navy personnel coxswain'ed (drove) the landing craft, US Navy provided both naval gunfire and aerial bombardment. The landing forces were the Third Marine Division and the 1st Provisional Marine Brigade, along with the U.S. Army 77th Infantry Division ... To say the USMC were the ONLY troops involved with the liberation of Guam is a true disservice ... Not one of the services works alone in a bubble, it called Team Work (Pic for information) en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Battle_of_Guam_(1944)#/media/File:Coast_Guard_Marines_at_Guam_-_ca._July_1944.jpg , US Navy
@@Spudknocker umm nope. The Army 77th Infantry Division was there too. In fact the US Army fielded more fighting men in the Pacific than the entire Marine Corps. 22 Divisions to the Marines 5. That doesn’t even include the Army Air Corps. I’m not taking anything away from the Marines they did some great stuff but they weren’t alone in very many battles.
Great showcase Mr. Spud :) I couldn't wait more to see someone showing Andersen AFB! and oh yes, that "the Pacific" theme song is pure emotional goosebumps!
I actually bought 'The Pacific' Blu-ray boxset a couple of weeks ago.. one of the best things I've ever watched. One of the main characters EB Sledge wrote a book called ' With the Old Breed' which I intend to sit and read.. some of the shit that went down there should never be forgotten. I'm new to DCS I can't wait to play WW2 Vietnam missions.. never did I imagine I'd be rescuing troops in a Huey.. I might even put a soundtrack together..'pain it Black' by the stones.. yeah baby! Great work Spudknocker.
I'd still love to see player controlled bombers in game, just to have the experience of long flight missions. Though that'd take a hell of a lot of resources
With Syria and now the Marianas.. I feel that the Persian Gulf Map is being left behind. Damn It's so detailed and beautiful despite its small size I flew over it for hours.
@@neilharrah7365 Pretty sure there's an F-15E module in the works so might be about that. Though I doubt they'd update the model before the plane comes out
I feel you when you say that living on the west coast ties you more to that map. I was born and raised in Normandy, it is something special to setup missions to attack my hometown to free it from the ennemi. "fun"fact : French pilots were generally not involved in bombing escorts above France by fear of them shooting down bombers. Several pilots said in their memoirs that this idea crossed their mind sometimes ...
@@Spudknocker yeah, could see that possibly but believe they only ordered about 50 missiles. The AF just lost interest in the program and really only stayed in testing. But going to basically restrict the Viper to CAP on this map. Hopefully people are practicing hitting the tanker too, going to be needed on this map.
You're right, it really does look good. They did a fantastic job. Now, we just need the rest of the assets and we can build our own little slice of the PTO. I want to see Hellcats, Wildcats, P-39s and Corsairs mixing it up with Zeros, Oscars and Franks.
That island between Rota and Tinian is Aguijan. It's uninhabited. Those 'communication' towers on Tinian, we use to call them the VOAs (which i believed stood for Voice of America) and yeah I believe they were used for communication and radio broadcasting and the such. They have more VOAs on Saipan just west of the approach end of runway 7. The little off shore island on Saipan is called Managaha. It's supposed to be the best snorkeling spot on the island.
Going to finally get back into dcs with this map. Kind of put dcs on the side do to bad performance. Hopefully this runs better. (or a crypto crash). Edit: that part about hiroshima and nagasaki was very interesting, i was thinking about it the other day. I think that people look on it as a terrible moment in history(which it was) but fail to remember the alternative. Sometimes you are presented with a no win situation(which this kind of was) and are forced to choose the lesser of 2 evils. The bad people here were the ones that were willing to let innocents die before conceding defeat. I mean there is a reason its not hiroshima or just nagasaki... the fact that president Truman was forced to use a nuke twice on imperial Japan really shows how bull headed imperial Japan was at the time.
The Purple Heart thing didn't get me thinking about how many lives the bombs potentially saved, no, it got me thinking of how morbidly business-like war can be. That's the equivalent to clearing up land and digging thousands of graves in preparation for an invasion, but this time with an important medal. Almost like the invasion was being viewed as a potential hero factory instead of a tragedy ready to happen.
My grandfather was a belly gunner on a B-17F during WWII, so I understand what you mean. His plane was shot down, and he spent 23 months in a German prison camp.
Dude, they can't make a vietnam map until they get more US 3rd gen fighters - F-4 at the top of that list, but also maybe F-105 and F-8. Also some higher fidelity infantry modeling would be good, since that was the vast bulk of the NVA force.
That’s cool indeed, although I would prefer for them to make the Irak map so we can have a complete terrain from Georgia all the way to muscat, because to be honest, there’s were most of the military campaigns took place…
27th Inf US Army was on Saipan. They fought with distinction - "The 1st and 2nd Battalions of the 105th Infantry Regiment were almost destroyed, losing well over 650 killed and wounded. However, the fierce resistance of these two battalions, as well as that of Headquarters Company, 105th Infantry, and of supply elements of 3rd Battalion, 10th Marine Artillery Regiment, resulted in over 4,300 Japanese killed and over 400 dead US soldiers with more than 500 more wounded. For their actions during the 15-hour Japanese attack, three men of the 105th Infantry Regiment were awarded the Medal of Honor: Lt. Col. William O'Brien, Cpt. Ben L. Salomon, Pvt. Thomas A. Baker, all posthumously. The attack on 7 July would be the largest Japanese Banzai charge in the Pacific War." Not wanting to nitpick but since it's the Internet, I can :) Great vids.
Hello, Spudknocker, I did my exploration in a TF-51. It was an amazing experience, I felt like flying over paradise, but there are some places that remind of WW2.
Hey Spud, have you seen the updates to the Caucuses it looks amazing, so is this map, a little low visuals, but i think ED is doing amazing work, love everything they doing, and thanks so much for your videos, never miss one.
That idea about using F-15E's to transport weapons is B.S. they can haul everything with one ship far cheaper than any ferrying operation with expensive fighter/bombers. As you have noted there are plenty of bunkers to store weapons. As far as depth perception have you recorded exactly how high you are when you can perceive wave caps? that might be interesting.
The idea / Concept is not to have F-15E's ferry weapons to places like Guam, its to far flung small islands such as the Marshalls or Gilberts, where a gaggle of C-130's and F-15E's land on the unimproved runway on some island, F-35's or other jets then land and refuel from the C-130's and crews transfer weapons from the F-15E's to the F-35's etc then everyone takes off before the chinese hit the island with ballistic missiles.
Spud, if you were going to set up targets to bomb if you were launching off an carrier, where would you put them, ships in the Harbor ect..... Just curious Rex
Great Video! As a newbee, I was wondering...what are the keymappings I need to use to acheive the view motion that I see in all the spudnocker and other videos? I've seen a lot of videos on keymapping, but none of them show how to set up the various views provided in the DCS simulations.
Hey Spudknocker, when you were a professional scuba diver, can you mention your closest, terrifying experience with a shark? 7 Years is a long time so I assume you've seen your share.
You just described the JF-17 to a T... Why not use it instead? BTW My Grandfather was a Chief Seabee he built all the runways in the Pacific your Grandpa flew off of.
The nuking of Japan wasn’t the only reason for surrender as it is often told. A big factor was also that the Soviet Union started invading the Japanese homeland and was making significant progress by the end of the war
Thank you for this. I have a technical question: I can see the map and chose it, but can not fly the Su25 or P51 on the map. Free Flight will not give an option to fly on the Marianas map. Nor does any Create Mission allow me to fly on it. Do I need to buy another airplane or a mission or any other DLC to fly on it? Steam Edition. Thank you
No, you don't need to buy anything. They just didn't prepare any missions on this map for these free planes. Probably not yet, don't know. In the mission editor you can place whatever units you like.
Wonder if they'll take a page out of War Thunder, add a US carrier task force to the lower corner of the map and a Chinese carrier TF to the upper corner of the map to give it some more freedom of movement and diversity.
first time hear mariana islands as a chinese tbh lol, and hope there's some cool guy can make a great single player training map with it, cant wait to try it at free time
How do you get this new Free map??? I thought it would show up in my DCS or be included in the update I installed, but still no map. Is there a download link somewhere?
@@Spudknocker I looked in the module manager, all I have is the Caucasus terrain. Update: Found it. I installed an update yesterday that I'd been putting off installing, it wasn't in there. Just now loaded DCS and there was another update, installed it and it was the Marianas terrain.
For me the map works fine at free flight. But with weapon usage and all the explosions and missles flight and guns and ground hit smoke the map kills my fps usage.
With your aviation history background what is your opinion on the statements by some saying Japan was already about to surrender and the US just wanted to test atomic weapons?
It’s completely counterfactual to the facts on the ground, while Japan fought hard to defend Okinawa/Iwo Jima, the Japanese were amassing thousands of aircraft in the home islands for kamikaze missions against the coming invasion. Hundreds of thousands of troops were transferred from Kwantung Army to the home islands, and the entire Japanese population, men women and children were being prepared to fight to the death against the invasion. To say the Japanese were about to surrender is just factually inaccurate. Hell there was even a COUP against the government by the Army after the surrender was finally announced to keep the surrender from happening at all. I could go on and on but to say Japan was about to surrender is the biggest heap of revisionist crap.
@@jakubdabrowski3846 I remember in some of the documentaries I watched of Japanese people jumping off cliffs for fear of what they were told wold be done to them by the US and pleading marines trying to stop families from jumping to their deaths. As well as the Japanese homeland training of fight to the last man, woman, and child.
WHY review a map from 2500ft at 500kts? It would have been way more interesting to see it from a chopper. Spudknocker, I think you could have done better.
