This is a prerequisite episode where we go over visually how to land a plane, more specifically with PAPI lights. This shot video will help you understand the landing procedure and the PAPI light system overall which will make the next episode a bit easier to digest where we actually show you the landing procedure.

Flight instructor ralfidude, love it. Even though its been years since my training and I am able to practice the basics all the time, still nice to see this stuff being replicated for the new DCS players. The video is absolutely enticing, short and sweet, wonderfully narrated *grrrrrrrr*, but content rich to those who are getting into DCS without the basics of aviation.

So what about runways that don't have PAPI lights? Well this is where practicing on airfields WITH PAPI lights is going to help you, beacause you wll see what a proper descent looks like. After doing enough landings with PAPI lights assisting you, you should have the picture of how to descend down to the runway engraved in your soul. So if you come across an airfield that does not have PAPI lights, it shouldn't be too hard to judge what 3 degrees of glide slope looks like, or at the very least judge if you are too high or too slow. Next episode is being edited as I type this where I show you how all of this comes together.

What's a good pitch angle to aim for while descending? Is there a specific value or is it just any value where you can see where you're going and the PAPI lights?
@ralfidude
@ralfidude Год назад
@@LuckieLordie remember, you pitch for speed, so your pitch should be adjusted to keep the speed correct.

Also an additional tip for planes with pitch ladders huds is to put the touchdown point between your horizon and -5deg line

Somewhere in the distance, I could hear a voice and I think it was that of my flight instructor saying „You can always go around.“

An excellent training video, as always - you've definitely re-ignited my Froggy flying, as its always good to get practice in, and for which I am thankful. I'm a bit old-school for flight sims (having started in 1986 with subLOGIC Jet 1.0 , the first IBM-Compatible 3D graphics jet combat sim), and land using the runway (and its lights at night) as the primary visual reference. The Froggy is always wonderfully forgiving.

Great video. =) In the Froggy specifically though I prefer the "trim for speed/AoA" method, since it holds it so well (some planes really don't hold the AoA steady when you play with the throttle). I slow down and trim nose up until the AoA indicator is just below the yellow area (so about 15°), and after that I don't really need to trim or use pitch anymore, other than to flare right at the end. Just adjusting the throttle will keep the AoA almost entirely constant, and just adjust the glideslope.

I love these series their so helpful. Could you do one for the F16 cause I feel like some of the other guides just over complicate things

I the case of being in the F/A-18 ignore everything, slow down and just fly at three degrees down straight into the runway

Is flaps to half until close to landing a Frog peculiarity, or should I be doing it for most aircraft? I've been going full flaps on the downwind (Hornet style) for everything 😞
@ralfidude
@ralfidude Год назад
Do what you want, but full flaps will slow you down a lot and make things a bit harder since the frogs engines aren't as powerful as the hornets to respond. See what works for you better.

@ralfidude Год назад
Fly at 600meters at least and then fly towards to runway. Now look at the papi lights and as soon as you see 2 white and 2 red, start your descent and follow the papi lights. You can technically do this at any altitude and descent with the papi lights.

Honestly this raw theoretical video is probably completely useless for new people. You need to show it in practice right away, while pausing and explaining what they need to pay attention to, but you can't just explain without any grounding in how it actually looks from the cockpit of the third person view. I dont remember learning raw theory myself on this exact topic, but on many other I know it makes zero sense if it's detached from reality. Still pretty good video, sure, I'm just saying it's not gonna help by itself, it will require the student to go crash a few times before they start understanding what you're talking about.
@ralfidude
@ralfidude Год назад
Sorry but that's incorrect. You first learn the theory and the phsyics of it because it is a MAJOR part of landing. From all the questions we get on a daily basis on people who CANNOT for their life control their airspeed or altitude, this explains how to handle that. And if you've been paying attention to the playlist you will see that the NEXT episode I show the landings done from the cockpit, incorporating everything learned in this lesson....
