Another way to check BRC quickly is to use F9 for external camera of the ship. The information bar at the bottom of the screen will show the ship's speed and heading.

What is the difference between the ships heading and the landing strip on the carrier? If the ship is traveling at 180 degree due South, what’s the heading of the landing strip? 187? 186?

keeping the ball energized means to keep it moving....not necessarily to move it above the datums (tho yes you most definitely need to move it up if low). It means to always be doing something positive to move the ball... ..up or down. It means be proactive not reactive. push the ball around....don't wait for a change to react to it.

For BRC on servers where you can't see the ship in F10 map, I generally line up along the course of the ship with my jet and take the bearing from there. It's not precise but close enough for government work as they say.
@mhe0815
@mhe0815 6 лет назад
Don't forget the BRC line you measure out of the mission editor referenced to true north while the TACAN 360 radial references to magnetic. Given the different magnetic variations of the different maps, there will always be a slight difference. If you want a precise BRC, just line up your TACAN CSEL line in your HSI when approaching the boat from the rear before the initial break. Awesome vid, just like the previous one!
@Jabbers

Great vids matey :) A little tip that might help in regards to the runway heading of the carrier, bring up your comms menu (default in the UK is the # key) and call up the boat and declare that you are inbound. The carrier will get back to you with what heading you need to travel to the boat, distance to the boat and RUNWAY HEADING. Hope this helps. Gotta be better than opening up missions in ME...... NOTE: this is using the Eisenhower carrier NOT the Stennis, might work, haven't tried.

Another way to trim for on-speed AOA is to look at your right DDI (which should be set to SUPPORT > FCS). I find that a stabilator deflection of 13-14 gives me the proper AOA.

Thanks Jabbers...thank goodness you called it a game! I noticed on another very well known channel that they are quiet serious and treat people like they are idiots if they have problems and 'they' were even talking about placing filtering in to stop people not to their 'standard' from joining them. Seems some are becoming elitist...bit sad but thankfully there are plenty of good folks around like yourself to help out those of us at different levels of experience ...cheers mate

I like the realism factor, I love using proper brevity, radio comms, etc. but ya end of the day it is a video game where you should be able to do things you can’t do irl, have fun and don’t put down others that play the way they want to play, which goes both ways :) if they want to be elitists that’s totally fine too :)
@bushranger900
@bushranger900 6 лет назад
Yep I have no issue with the realism bar none so far at least DCS is the best. I agree regards brevity and radio comms of course and I suppose individuals want to 'play' in a server then I guess they accept that responsibility. However others need to chill though and help grow confidence to encourage them. The winner will be DCS in the end with players buying new modules and new modules being developed... Just my thoughts is all. Thanks

You can get the BRC from the carrier using coms. Talk to the carrier and say you are inbound. When you get nearer to the carrier they will call you with the BRC. The downside, is that you are almost on top of it at that point. So once you get the BRC, setup your tacan properly, fly away from the carrier a bit, then head back for the pattern. btw for n88bs like me, I HIGHLY recommend turning on ICLS. Yes, it's a case 1 and no, you probably shouldn't use it, BUT it really helps you get your eye in - especially in VR where the ball can be a little hard to see!

So why aim the VV for the crotch jabbers? It has the plane landing across the strip. I usually just aim the VV just past the 4th wire... is that wrong of me?
@Jabbers
@Jabbers 6 лет назад
Yes that's wrong, the ship is moving left to right, so if you are aiming for the wires you will not be lined up on center when you land (you wil lbe at a slight angle). So you aim slightly to the right and only on the rollout, after that you VVI is irrelevant except to see that your glide slope is ~3 degrees, but you should be referencing the ball for that too, not your VVI.

@Jabbers Awesome Case I tutorial video! Having issues turning in at the abeam, start 27-30 degrees angle of bank, on speed but by the time I get to the 90 need to really shallow out my turn to 5-10 degrees AoB. Generally between 1.1 - 1.3 nm abeam of the boat and maintaining rate of descent as you referenced. I’m cutting into the turn and not sure why, any advice? Thanks and cheers :)

Whoa!! Thanks for the quick reply!! But generally find myself cutting the corner. Tried a 25 AoB but that leaves me very very long in the groove.
@kmcnelley1981
@kmcnelley1981 5 лет назад
@Jabbers After much self criticism, worked out what I was doing incorrectly. Basically fell in the habit (without really noticing) when turning in at abeam my Rate of Descent was initially to great and by the time I caught where I was supposed to be (I thought) I had already cut in to the final turn, which was putting me well left of the boat where I should be rolling wings level in the groove. Hope that makes sense...… Thanks again for your videos!! Really shows the importance of having the correct Rate of Descent.

That "rocking the throttle" thing is interesting and I feel like I've seen pilots do this IRL, what exactly does this accomplish?
@MrTurbohampster
@MrTurbohampster 6 лет назад
Disclaimer I don't fly f18's in real life so could be wrong and happy to be corrected, but have flown 737,757,767 and now 777. I don't understand the rocking the throttle bit, it makes no sense to me... In real life we know roughly what power setting we need to maintain the glideslope. You set this power then correct around this setting. But you don't just randomly rock the throttles back and forwards, this is just throwing unnecessary inputs in making it harder to keep your approach stable. Which is strange because his advice on the stick is spot on, "dont jerk it all over the place". From flying the f18 in DCS it seems you need quite a lot of throttle movement for relatively small corrections. Given how accurately they try to fly the glideslope in real life its not surprising to me to see the throttle move a lot. Especially when you factor in wind turbulence etc. Listen to the engines next time your on a flight, especially in gusty winds you will hear the engine power constantly changing, sometimes quite a lot. The main thing with jets especially low down landing is you don't want to bring the throttles back to idle. Even modern jet engines take quite a long time to spool up from flight idle. Try slowing down to on speed in the hornet fully configured with the throttles at idle and see how long it takes the power to come to maintain the speed.
@Jabbers
@Jabbers 6 лет назад
Yes real pilots do it, keeps the power in the engines moving and more importantly your reaction time. This was something told to me by a navy pilot
@MrTurbohampster

Trim seems completely ineffective in normal flight with flaps at AUTO. Attaining level flight seems excessively difficult. Trim It is very effective with flaps at HALF or FULL. With flaps set to HALF (at any airspeed) trim works fine. Is this correct.....am I bugged or doing something wrong?

I do play in VR from time to time, for Twitch and RU-vid I use TrackIR for quality. I own an Oculus and have a Pimax on order.

jabbers, I'm not sure if this video is still relevant due to FM changes since it was uploaded, but... how the fuck do you deal with ballooning when dropping flaps? I noticed it doesn't happen to you, at least you don't move the stick at all after dropping full flaps and stay on AoA.

@@Jabbers Interesting. I guess I must've heard scripts something about marking moms (insert angels)
@Jabbers

In MP there is a script called Airboss used by some servers that might do that, there is also a way to activate the Eagle Dynamics scripts but they are Wip and not always working, so I've not tried it

How to know if i am turning 75deg, the hud shows only until 45deg!
@Jabbers
@Jabbers 6 лет назад
What timestamp on the video are we talking about
@LiveAnotherDay24
@LiveAnotherDay24 6 лет назад
It is about the answer to the question how to keep a level turn. You answer that for a 350kts/3.5G turn you need 75deg angle of bank. But how do I know if I am turning at 75deg if the HUD shows only to 45deg? It has the marks for 5-15-30 and 45deg.

You don't, and if you are at 75, you are just going to have to feel it out.

wish there was a way to reset trim :
@tswdev
@tswdev 6 лет назад
There is. On the lower left, behind the throttle, there is switch that can turn left and right and in the center has a button. Left and Right is rudder trim. The center button is TRIM RESET TO TAKEOFF TRIM. So basically TRIM RESET to what you should have on take off.
@Hanfkrokette
@Hanfkrokette 6 лет назад
Yeah i´m aware of that being the TO Trim,haven´t noticed any reset inflight though.May have to try again or its not implemented yet :O
@tswdev
@tswdev 6 лет назад
Reset inflight? You can press the button while flying. And it wont jerk back like the Su-27 would because of the fly-by-wire system. It will just ... fix bad trim.
@WhiteEagleTube
@WhiteEagleTube 6 лет назад
Joao Carlos if you press reset TO trim it will set it to 12 degrees and most of the time the aircraft will climb as level flight trim would be around 8 degrees. I just have either FCS page or checklist open and you can see the angle of the rear stabiliser.
