DCU: CHAPTER 1 - Batman & Superman, Brainiac as DCU Villain, Future DC Success & MORE! 

I always held on to the idea that Bruce became Batman before Clark became Superman but Superman was the first public superhero since The Batman started as an urban legend

For me as an old GL fan I think the Manhunters with their sleeper agents would be a good plot thread. Their reach can cover every where, Earth and Cosmos. The reveals that sleepers are close to power, and heroes and villains. Anyway my two cents.

One thing I like about the idea of Supes and Bats being closer in age this time around is it can open the door for more casual banter in terms of them talking about things that they have in common whether that's interests in certain music or shows and movies that they grew up watching. Of course that type of dialogue would happen more once Batman begins to open himself up to Supes and the other heroes.

I am reassured to hear Gunn say that he and Peter Safran want every project to feel independent and individualized, so that people aren’t beholden to watching everything to understand the DCU. They said that people can just watch the projects they want without having to worry about being “behind”, so Superman: Legacy or Peacemaker or Lanterns should stand on their own.

I think the bat family is going to be really important to distinguish this universe and it’s Batman to every other one. A big part of Batman’s character development now is his team and relationships with them and I’m really excited to see how that’s adapted to film for the first time. This probably won’t happen anytime soon but if they wanted Dick out of the way to focus on other robins I’d love to see the New Teen Titans adapted too.

Brainiac could be a great chapter 1 main villain he’s a planetary threat and can bring together both street level crime fighters and cosmic heroes, but i wouldn’t be mad if they use other villains like Mongul o Vandal Savage, let Dark Seid take a rest you normally don’t use you biggest bad guy first anyway

I think if Batman is around 35 that would be perfect age and old enough to for a young child as well.

Or Bruce met Talia when he was 18 and first started training/globetrotting. She targeted him as a mark and wanted a kid by him. Seduced him and then disappeared. That would put him at 30-32 when Damian gets dropped off. As for Brainiac I hope he's just an AI program at first, no corporal form. It makes him hard to defeat. Elusive, everywhere at once, a ghost in the machine.

To make the Batman timeline work, I think Dick & Jason should be a little closer in age & raised around the same time so that there is an established brotherhood between them. It would also make things easier for transitioning the 2 Robins sense Jason is already living there. They'll still have the same back stories, they'll just happen a little closer together. Dick becomes Robin, than after about maybe 2-3 years, Jason gets adopted. Dick joins the Teen Titans & becomes Nightwing, he then passes the mantel to Jason who are very close by now.

Via the Hollywood Reporter (and Gunn on Threads), Zack Snyder said he called Gunn to “wish all the best for him. I told him I wanted it to work.” Zack also said if Gunn would invite him back to DC he would only tackle a true adaptation of Frank Miller's ‘DARK KNIGHT RETURNS’. Gunn: “Like I said many months ago, when I shared that he did this, Zack is a good guy.”

I feel like we’re all forgetting that Brave and the Bold doesn’t come out next year. By the time we get our DCU Batman it will be several years into the DCU. Corenswet’s Superman could be 35 or 36 by the time Brave and the Bold happens so a 40 year old Batman would be “only a little older”. Plus assuming we get BatB in 5ish years and Corenswet has been Superman for, let’s say, 3 years before Legacy, then Batman could have theoretically started his crusade fairly close to the same time as Superman

I literally burst out laughing when you said Damian will probably have the same vibe as Hit Girl from Kick-Ass. It’s SO TRUE.

This version of Batman will have his own allies, so the idea of him being accepting and friendly with Superman is way more believable. He will have already learned the power of teamwork (friendship). I like what you said. Their age will not be that drastically different with Batman being a little older, but he's been fighting crime for longer than Superman for sure. This way Batman will be able to help Superman grow in some ways, but he will likely learn a lot from him as well. The mutual respect they have for each other is the most important part of their dynamic. Their age difference shouldnt matter as long as its not decades something gap.

Batman spent his high school and college years in training, traveling the world, being taken under the wing of all manner of assassins, martial arts masters, technology geniuses, etc. Even if they are the same age, Batman spent those years training hard while Superman was in college and University getting his degree in journalism. Even at the same age, Batman would always have been more experienced in many things.

My top pick currently for Batman is Oliver Jackson-Cohen. He has the look, the acting capabilities, the height, and he’s currently 37 so he’s neither too old nor too young. As a close second for a bit of a younger choice I’d pick Colin Woodell.

I think Bruce should be the age he was in Batman the Animated Series which looked and felt like Bruce was around 33ish years old around season one. BTAS Batman felt young but moved with a confident, comfortable ease. The way Bruce moved about a crime scene or spoke to Jim Gordon felt like Bruce was at this for a little while, not a year one newbie but not Batfleck age. In mask of the Phantasm, I believe there's a flashback to about a decade before that depicts Bruce's first night as a proto-Batman with the ski mask look. He starts usually in his mid 20s so I think DCU Bats will be 33-35. So long story short BTAS should be the template for DCU Batman's age, personality and world view.

I’ve always preferred when Batman trains and works alongside Dick for about 8 years. Seeing as Dick is the most iconic, first and most popular Robin I think it’s only right. I think Dicks training should begin when Bruce is about 20-22 years of age, and Batman should start his crusade at about 20-21, I think it works better at letting Batmans Lore breathe and giving Every Robin their time, not just forcing the next after the previous.

I hope Circe is a big threat throughout the DCU. She's so powerful and capable of taking down so many. Shes also able to exist through the whole grand timeline. Like if they do a JSA, she can be behind some of their threats. And part of the Paradise Lost show.

Honestly, I don't care about what age Batman is- nor do I care about what characters are included or excluded because Gunn has stated no one will be cast until the script is complete. Personally that gives me alot of joy because that's the way it should be. So whoever is selected for Batman will be appropriate for THE SCRIPT. Which is what's important. Not appeasing fans. Not trying to fit a type before having a story. But someone who fits the Batman written in the script. So I don't care what direction they go, I'm just glad no one will be cast until there's a script. People and this dated view of movie - trilogy. Seres = multiple seasons, seriously need to stop with Comic characters. Some characters don't need trilogies and multiple series seasons. Tell the original story, introduce the characters and then use them in ensemble films. I don't get this obsessive need to make everything a trilogy: that's just as ridiculous as 3 Antman movies or even 2 Shazam movies to be honest. 1 was enough for both, then use them in ensemble films.

aren't there multiple comic continuities where Bruce came back to Gotham as Batman when he was just 21 years old? If so then I'm definitely okay with the idea of Batman in this new universe starting out at that age and being a 10 year vet at 31

I think the latern series should be the only with multiple seasons to avoid saturation. It can be set far from Earth to avoid the main JL heroes while setting up more powerful universal enemies.

To make Superman believable, he has to refuse to use force against anybody. Unless there is absolutely no other way, have the person. Looking Christopher Reeves, that is the embodiment of Superman.

Regarding Wonder Woman when then finally cast her blue eyes is kind of important to me personally, it would be nice to finally get an actual Greek Wonder Woman

I want batman to be older in this just because we already have a younger batman in the Reevesverse. Even better if they keep it open ended enough so you can kindof theorize reevesverse being the younger version of the DCU batman. Also, didn’t we get confirmation that at least all 4 sons would be in the Batfamily in the DCU? No matter how young Bruce starts as a parent, that seems too much to fit in a short career. Batman and Superman can be different ages. Multigenerational friendships exist

Think it’s more important to consider how many times superman has save the world as opposed to how many years has superman been doing it? Like is he a worldwide phenomenon that’s having statues built for him or is he still a rumor? I mean he could be around for three years but only been dealing with lower level threats

What about Jason and Tim at the same time. I think that could add a lot to their dynamic, provide an interesting caveat to Jason’s character (perhaps strengthening his feeling that he was replaced), it also enables Batman to be younger at the beginning of the Brave and the Bold.

Batman has to be an age where having a 10 year old or so being dropped off on his doorstep makes sense. Knowing James Gunn... it terms of your question about the main villain... with Swamp Thing on the Cards and some other different characters we haven't really seen on the big screen... I bet the first main Villain will be somebody like Trigon.

Something to keep in mind is that Batman is also more experienced simply because of his lack of super powers. He had to learn his skills the hard way and was forced to be much more resourceful. So all things equal, Batman is still going to be much more competent at fighting crime; I’d argue that even if Superman had been established for the same period of time, his abilities gives him an obvious advantage and he hasn’t had to deal with the same adversity and thus is far less experienced. So even at the same age, Batman would seem more mature, knowledgeable, and, again, competent.

So for me, with regards to Batman and the Robins' timeline, I think it breaks down something like this: Batman: trains for 7 years while traveling the globe before Year 1 Dick Grayson: gets the most training from Batman, maybe 4-5 years, starting in Year 3 Jason Todd: Only gets like 1 or 2 years of training before he dies starting Year 8 Tim Drake: Gets 2 or 3 years of training starting 2 years after Jason dies so like Year 12 The comics vary on when Bruce leaves to start training. I've seen as young as 14 to as old as 22. Let's use that range, kinda, to determine how old Bruce would be when Damian arrives on his doorstep. First example using the lower end of each time range: 14 (leaves to start training) - 21 (Year 1) - 23 (Year 3, Dick Grayson arrives) - 27 (Year 7, Dick leaves, Jason arrives within the same year) - 28 (Year 8, Jason dies) - 30 (Year 10, Tim arrives) - 32 (Year 12, Tim still around, Damian arrives): this puts Bruce at 2 years older than Superman but already with so much experience as a crime fighter. I also really like the idea that Bruce kinda thinks he's the shit so he takes on Dick at only 23, thinking he can make it work, only to be a super mediocre dad because he's a young idiot which is what causes Dick to leave to form the Titans and become Nightwing. Plus, you'd have Bruce, angry that Dick left, try to winnow down the training schedule when Jason comes along to replace Dick faster and then Jason gets cocky and dies because he thinks he's as good as Dick too early. Then you'd have Batman try taking his time with Tim because he doesn't want a Robin, but Tim is insistent, so they're still training when Damian arrives, creating a tense, brotherly rivalry between Damian and Tim. The takeaway from this example is that the absolute minimum age Bruce could be is 33 years old. Second example using the higher end of each time range: 22 (leaves to start training) - 29 (Year 1) - 31 (Year 3, Dick arrives) - 36 (Year 8, Dick leaves, Jason arrives within the same year) - 38 (Year 10, Jason dies) - 40 (Year 12, Tim arrives) - 43 (Year 15, Tim still around, Damian arrives): this puts Bruce at like 12 years older than Superman but makes his many years of experience feel kinda more realistic to the common audience. I'm not a huge fan of him being that much older than Clark though. I think it works better if they are only a few years apart. The only thing about this age is that it also makes his fatherhood dynamic with the Robins feel better too, but I still think younger is better. The takeaway from this example is that the absolute maximum age Bruce could be is 43 years old, which in no way is super old but it does put him much closer to edging out of his prime than I want. If we want to run ages for the Robins also, we can using the metrics of Youngest Bruce: (Each Robin will get their own age range for starting based on my own thoughts) Dick: (the youngest I think Dick should be at the start is 12, any younger and I think we would have to consider child abuse allegations but 12 is Percy Jackson's starting age so that works for me. The oldest I think he should be when starting is 15 to give him and Bruce a weird quasi-father/son, brothers relationship with Dick thinking of Bruce more and more as a brother while Bruce considers him a son the whole time)12 (Year 3) - 16 (Year 7, leaves to become Nightwing) - 17 (Year 8, Jason dies) - 19 (Year 10, Tim arrives) - 21 (Year 12, Damian arrives) OR 15 (Year 3) - 19 (Year 7, leaves to become Nightwing) - 20 (Year 8, Jason dies) - 22 (Year 10, Time arrives) - 24 (Year 12, Damian arrives) = youngest age around 21 and oldest age around 24. Jason: (the youngest I think Jason should be is 15 to keep him close to Dick while the oldest could be maybe 16 cause any older and the relationships seem weird) 15 (Year 7) - 16 (Year 8, dies) - 20 (resurrected when Damian arrives, do Under the Red Hood as the 2nd Batman movie) OR 16 (Year 7) - 17 (Year 8, dies) - 21 (resurrected when Damian arrives) Tim: (again, I think the optimum age here is 16) 16 (Year 10) - 18 (Year 12, Damian arrives) Damian: Damian should be whatever age Dick started at for sure. Puts them closer together as brothers in terms of Dick understanding Damian's perspective and sets Tim and Damian at odds more because Tim didn't start until he was older which Damian uses to tease him. Anyway, in my perfect world, these are the ages in Brave and the Bold: Bruce - 33 Dick - 24 Jason - Dead (but technically 20) Tim - 18 Damian - 14 or 15 Let me know what y'all think!

I liked the idea of Teasing Brainiac. This talk reminds me how well The DCAU/Timmverse came out way it did. In commentary they talked as if it was all luck but i doubt that because i liked their creative ideas regarding the shows. Such as Brainiac coming from Krypton when he doesnt in the comics but to make him a enemy of Jor-El and later Superman. In the pilot we see Brainiac as a talking computer screen who kryptonians , except Jor-El trust Brainiac with their lives till the last minutes of Krypton's destruction while Brainiac downloads himself to a satellite. Id like to see Lois not be drooling over superman at first, have that partnership taken well with Clark Kent like Lois & Clark's versions. Loved the chemistry on that show between Lois & Clark as reporter partners at Daily Planet and later Lois fall more in love with Superman as Clark falls for her.

I think that comment halfway through this video said it best. Superman‘s going to be on another level, powerful. You’re absolutely right too Boba, Batman and his 10 years of experience (which is perfect by the way) will be dwarfed by Superman’s two years and natural talent. “In a class of his own“ won’t even begin to describe his base power. Batman will look at him in fear and jealousy to see the man that he doesn’t believe he will become, the savior of the universe, The physical representation of good and power combined. I truly loving god. Lex Luthor won’t be able to see it either but Batman will come around, what’s what makes him batman. I think that’s what James Gunn has in store.

There is a great story (forget we’re I read it) we’re Superman is going home from a big mission and sees an 8-year old wrecking his bike. He catches the kid, who is fine, but the kid is upset that the tire is bent (and he had to go without a bike for awhile). He tries to fix it but heatvision and hand strength doesn’t shape it right. The next day the kid finds a new nice bought by Clark wheel on his bike. On his way to Daily Planet, he passes on a coffee as he heads to work since he went off his budget. We see Jimmy hand him one (since Clark got him many in the past). Just a small heartmelting segment

I’m really excited for the DCU as a lifelong DC fan. I think the Manhunters may be involved in the Lanterns mystery. I also think we see untapped live action potential with Martian Manhunter and White Martians as what could bring the JLa together.

Brainiac would be a menacing and cool villain, if a Justice League movie will happen. A Braniac invasion would be so cool

All i ask is 3 things from Gunns batman: 1-PLEASE give us new villains: clayface, man bat, mr scarface, firefly, professor pig etc. 2-Arkham style fights (snyder was on the right path with batmans warehouse fight scene) 3-Give us a fantastical world like burtons universe but with a dead serious tone.

I feel like a good big bad would be vandal savage. He could be a good chapter 1 villain showing him manipulating events in history inside the dcu could be cool.

If they go the Brainiac rout, I really hope they imitate or take reference from Injustice 2's design of Brainiac. They made him so badass and awesome.

Maybe chapter one villain: Brainiac, chapter two: Lex, and chapter three: Darkseid. All tv shows should be only one season. Superman Legacy should be expected to hit at least a billion.

What Filmmaker would you most want to make a project for the DCU? Personally I would love to see Damien Chazelle (Whiplash, La La Land, First Man, Babylon) to have full control over any character. Maybe it's because La La Land is my favorite film but God damn I just want to see some real art in a franchise film.

I still stand by Superman being at about 5 years into his career. It fits him starting at 25 like Bruce, with a gap year or two after studying journalism in college, and it also matches the New 52 which featured a younger Superman. Same with some heroes announced being after and not before him, and Clark himself being inspired by the JSA just like in Doomsday Clock/Post-Rebirth. Just to break it down again: - Guy Gardner's definitely older and possibly Hal too but John and anyone else they'd get (Kyle, Jessica, Simon etc.) could be younger. It's important to note even in comics Alan Scott, the Golden Age GL, isn't as connected to them as Jay Garrick Flash is to Barry and Wally, at least at first. Barry on the other hand is a Jay Garrick fanboy from day #1. So Guy could be different from Alan but Clark could change that. It's interesting to note that with Superman retconned to not be from 1938, other characters took his place in the timeline as the big OG hero, including Alan Scott. - Hawkgirl, who judging from Isabela Merced's ethnicity, look and age, is likely a young Kendra Saunders who just became a hero herself inspired by her aunt Shiera Saundaers-Hall, the original Hawkgirl/woman and wife of Carter Hall, Hawkman. - Metamorpho is likely new as well, who isn't a legacy character like the others but got his powers in an accident. - Michael Holt was originally inspired by Terry Sloane, the original Golden Age Mister Terrific who was Caucasian, but only after the Spectre (fellow JSA member and another creation of Jerry Siegel, Superman co-creator) told him about him in John Ostrander (famously the writer of Suicide Squad who James Gunn is a big fan of) and Tom Mandrake's Spectre run. Maybe he's Superman's scientist friend like Leo Quintum or Emil Hamilton, and it's Clark who tells him about Mister Terrific. - In Doomsday Clock, the current continuity the JSA's existence in WWII inspired Jonathan Kent to not discourage Clark from being a hero or openly revealing himself to the world (likely a deliberate contrast to the DCEU which was still going on at the time) and in turn inspires Clark. Here, the same thing could happen, and he could take inspiration from their ideals of truth and justice in comparison to the Authority. So Legacy applies not just to Clark in terms of his Kryptonian legacy and his legacy, but the legacy of superheroes on him as well.

Possibly, Bruce was training with the LoA when he fell for Talia and they conceived a child when they were 18 or 19. Bruce would then be 29 when Damian is 10. Works.

Lantern show should show Sinestro leaving the green lanterns and becoming a yellow lantern also they should encounter other lanterns from the different colour spectrums . It would be cool to see them battling against atrocitus and the yellow lanterns and maybe introduce larfleeze

Maybe you've discussed this previously but will the new DC world feel like it's set in modern times or more like 80s or even older. I think it'd be better if it was in a significantly earlier time. Marvel has done the modern world with superhero thing to death and so has DC.

I am so Excited for DCU

Everyone else in superman legacy has a legacy that they have to live up to. Superman will have to create his own legacy and that legacy will probably be to change the way that superheroes operate in this new universe.

I would like for Batman to be in his absolute peak throughout the whole DCU (or at least the most of it), for Superman I would like to see him progress from Superman: Legacy and become prime Superman by the first JL movie when they (hopefully) fight Brainiac. Their relationship (Bats and Supes) would develop in Chapter 1(If Chapter1 would end with one big JL movie) and after it I would die to see The Public Enemies movie with peak Bats and Supes fight against a massive amount of villains and heroes, showing their dominance, it would be epic! I love your videos Boba, and did you consider doing asmr videos with you just reading some book or comic, you have such a relaxing voice.

I love your pitch of Brainiac as a main chapter 1 villain. The tease idea is great. A question/addition tho: what if we tease Brainiac as a villain in multiple properties and then bring him back, when we would first be seeing him in action, in a Superman sequel? It could be an ‘Empire Strikes Back’ tone/vibe of the protagonist being pushed beyond the edge/ lose it all while simultaneously solidifying Superman as the center of the DCU.

I can see the lanterns seeing clues of a cosmic threat...maybe a threat to superman. Maybe the first signs someone is working on doomsday or signs darkseid was in sector 2814 centuries ago looking for something.

We already got an older Batman and young Superman. I feel like this is a huge missed opportunity. We have an awesome young Batman in Pattinson. We could watch them grow together as friends and teammates. I think it can work even with the super serious The Batman universe. The difference in tones could make for very interesting storytelling.

And we all gotta realize that we won’t be seeing Batman and Superman’s first meeting, I’m sure they will already know of each other

I feel like Gunn is gearing the new DCU to head toward a “Kingdom Come” story line. We see the traditional hero’s in their origins but as the story goes on we see the new generation of heroes rise in popularity with the public as they win the fight by any means necessary. Clark, Bruce and the rest of the traditional hero’s hang up the capes and the world starts to decay in the aftermath of hero-villain conflict. In a huge endgame like finale we can see the traditional hero’s return and go head to head with the new hero’s in a civil war type setting and we can finish a saga without having to tell the same old injustice or darkseid storylines.

Honestly I say Pattinson should still play as Batman for James Gunn's DCU. Pretty much like same way JK Simmon plays as two different JJJ in both Raimi-Verse & MCU.

If Peacemaker can get multiple seasons, why shouldn't Lanterns get it.

If they finally could do it right, I still I'd like the Death of Superman and that is almost comic book accurate maybe but as trilogy and each, one picks up directly after one and another, Like Star Trek 2,3,4 is one continuous story. Like there is no gap between each movie, almost like tv show, where after 2, end 3 picks up next week where 2 left off, and where 3 leaves off, 4 picks up where 3 ended. But for Superman, 1st Superman in a trilogy: Start it with The Superman & Doomsday fight to the Death. and in between saving people and even John Henry Irons, and end the movie with Funeral For Friend type scene. Then for the 2nd movie start with Funeral For Friend type scene again, maybe even in black and white or even old movie serial real, then goes back into color and just after the funeral had ended, and then cut to Project Cadmus and Superboy just before the Newsboy Legion frees him, from the cloning tank. Id like to see newer villains for Batman, less of the mob boss/gang. Villains id like to see that would lead to a proper version of Bane with Knightfall Arc being done with multiple villains,etc. Villains id love to see is new female villain to match Batman is Lady Shiva, Hugo Strange, Man-Bat, Clayface, proper versions of Bane, Mr. Freeze, Joker,etc.

Braniac should be the main villain of the Superman trilogy, set up in Superman 1, 2 and Supergirl then a huge event in Superman 3, but for the main DCU villain i would say either Blackest Knight(Batman who laughs) or Nekron, not the antimoniter becuase hes been over done recently

Vandal Savage will be the big bad. Ties in with Dinosaur Island since he’s prehistoric. I can see this possibly being in junction with the Center or the Legion of Doom.

I want Lethal Weapon but with Superman and Batman

Superman ages differently but besides that who said that a 40 yr old and a 30 yr old aren't compatible? thats ridiculous. An age gap might work even better. James Gunn better bring it if he wants to be better than Snider.

Imo, for Batman to work, he’d have to be at least 35. Maybe make Grayson slightly older when Bruce takes him in. Batman would be starting around age 23ish, he finds Dick at 25. Dick would be around 12ish. Meanwhile, Nightwing should be around 21, making Batman 32/33ish when his movie drops. And both Jason, and Tim could have come and gone. Jason being about 15 when he starts, Tim being around 16 when he starts. And Superman shows up around Bruce turning 30. Superman is 25/26ish. As he graduates college before putting on the cape.

I think Brainiac is perfect, but if I had to choose a villain other than him, it might be someone like Mongul or maybe even Ultraman, plotting the destruction of alternate Earths he thinks could be a threat to him. But Brainiac is perfect. Also, I thinkk it would be awesome if it was discovered, after his defeat, that part of what motivated Brainiac to collect worlds, cultures, etc., was that he knew of a far more powerful force that was making its way to their universe to subsume all life to their will. A power only known as Darkseid, setting up the mystery of Darkseid for Chapter two.

I think it should be vandal savage lowkey, I think that would be fun and there’s so much you can do with him.
