you're the best! the fact that you took extra time to explain, as well as have the same firmware version/linksys router helped tremendously. I was a little confused about the whole client bridge and WDS AP and WDS station... I had to set my gateway and DNS to my primary router and set manual for the default GW mode, as well as set up a virtual interface. but it looks like I am getting both my 2.4 and 5 bands working! Thanks so much!!

Thank you very much! In my case I had to set in the "Wireless Basic Settings/Default GW Mode" to "Manual" and set my first router IP as Gateway. Now, it works!

Richard,I have bridged this router as your great video explained. In fact I have another router, a Linksys 54G bridged with Tomato. Both routers allow Internet access via a cable to the Samsung Blueray and the Samsung TV. With the linksys I can also see my media servers on my home pc and access them perfectly. With the Netgear they are not even shown. Apparently the router or DDWRT does not recognize DLNA services/devices? Any ideas what's missing?

The router is a wnr2000v3 and the ddwrt firmware is the one you linked to in the comment section. It has Internet access just fine. In the 'source' selection on the samsung tv, I should be able to see the shared media server as a source. It works perfectly with the linksys... I'm not a total noob to configuring these, but I usually use Tomato, which is what is running on the Asus RT-n16 primary router. Thanks for the reply..

Mike Pease I connected my router to my blue ray player too and it can no longer register the DNLA devices in my network too. The BR player normally connects through WIFI to my main router and sees the DNLA devices without any issue. So I have the same problem as you at this point. I am looking for a simple solution but up to this point I have not found it. It is a work in progress. If I do find a solution I will let you know and probably make a video about it too. Thanks. Please tell me if you resolve it before I do.

Trying to follow your procedure with the 18777 firmware (the one you recommended in your video on how to install the DD-WRT on the wnr2000v3) I find that once I create the virtual interface, the radio turns off on the primary. Any ideas?

Make sure that the DHCP service is enabled and running on the original primary router. This happened to me and it perplexed me for a time. Thanks

Richard thanks for the elaborate video. Everything works fine including being able to browse the web with a pc connected to the secondary router, but when I disconnect it and re-enable the PC's wifi, the PC is "stuck" at "acquiring ip address" and can't connect to the internet (through the secondary wifi network) . I checked the primary modem/router and it does seem that the WAN connection type is DHCP. The only thing I can think about is that when I configured the WRT54GL, under "wireless" (minute 23 in your clip), I have no option to choose "wireless mode" as "AP". Any help will be appreciated!

I've done these steps and am testing right now. Is there any reason the SSID for the virtual and physical interfaces can't be the same? I'd love to have a seemless wireless bridge, where one device can connect to the wireless bridge repeater, and then connect to the primary router when it gets closer without a user having to manually join a different wifi network. Having the same SSID and encryption/passkey works great for large areas with lots of wifi routers, it's my favorite wireless setup.

You can set them to SSID unfortunately there is no way to guaranty that your WIFI client will connect to the stronger signal. The card will connect to the first responder to the connect handshake it could be the weaker or the stronger signal but as far as I know there is no way to force the client to choose the stronger signal. I don't recommend doing it. Thanks.

Hi, Richard. Thanks for all the help you provide through your videos. I was able to flash my WNR2000V3 with dd-wrt, but have run into a minor problem. Once I configured the router, everything looks good except for the channel. It shows as unknown in the configuration. Do you know what affects something like this? Speed, channel width?

There is the primary wireless config and the virtual config. Which configuration are you refering to? Are you using the firmware I link to in the description?

I have a Netgear WNDR3700v1 and i got it all to work but for some reason the 5ghz repeater ssid i chose will not show up. The 2.4ghz works great and all the settings between the 2 frequencies are the same. Any suggestions?

Check and make sure DHCP service is on in the primary router.

I don't recommend it but it is possible. The problem is that you never know which router you are connected and there is no guarantee that you will connect to the faster or stronger signal. Thanks.

At time stamp 17:50 you speak about having Security on your wireless router. I am a noob, so what is the recommended settings for security, any recommendations or do you have any videos/articles on setting it up ? Appreciate your feedback.

On the video at 18:28 on the video you will see the settings I use and recommend. Both the primary router have to use the same security settings to communicate with each other. I may make a video on WIFI security and optimization in the future. The basic rules for WIFI security is never leave it unsecured, never use WEP encryption is possible and use WPA encryption at the least. I use WPA2 and have never had a problem as far as security is concerned on the router and the clients. You can think of SSID as the user name and the WPA shared key as the password. Once you set that up your clients (computers, tablets, smart phones, etc) that connect to the router will require a one time configuration of the SSID and WAP shared key that you set on the router (you will have to use the exact same settings on the clients). Amen. I have progressed to this video have success. I have a working although blippy repeater. It was an exciting moment when I realized it was working. The mission was to allow my husband to be able use a SIP phone from his company in the basement while our modem/primary router is upstairs. One more question though about the adapters. I have 3 under the Network and Sharing Center. One says "Wireless Network Connection" shows the name of primary Router and a good connection, Another says "Local Area Connection" shows network cable unplugged has an X although enabled, and the third says "Wireless Network Connection 2" shows the same X and enabled as well. Is this what it should be under this area?

The local area connection represents your LAN connection and if there is nothing plugged into it, it will show X if it's not connected to anything. The others are wireless connections which more than likely the drivers for you network card added and which work the same as the LAN if they are not connected they show and X. As my father used to say, "If it's not broken don't fix it." LOL They are normal and there is no need to play with them if they are working fine. Thanks.

I have it all working, SSID of VAP displayed, but configured password not accepted. Return window says WPA2 password needed, on iPhone return window says incorrect password for network. My password is 20 characters. I have even turned off wireless security, still cannot get access to this wifi network broadcasting from secondary client bridged router.

Thanks it works... I use internet provider router as primary router, and my wdr4300 as secondary router. Too bad, internet provider router only had 2.4GHz band, so im only enable 2.4GHz band on my wdr4300. I had a question, is it possible to bridge/extend dual band router at a same time?

I have tried this and it did work but not well. The WIFI clients would randomly connect to the wrong router with a very weak signal and vice versa. If you use a different name on the secondary you will know which router your WIFI client is actually connecting to and you will get optimum speed on the client. Thanks.

@Richard, I did everything as you said, but my primary router is a cisco from cox (router and modem) and i am not sure if that is the problem. I was fine and the internet was working through the land-cable but when i set up the virtual connection, the screen disappeared and i cant find it with the 192.168.1.2 ip address, also unlike yours, the internet connection has a yellow triangle on it. I should also mention that when i check the status of the secondary router, the "Autoconfiguration ipv4..." is set to 169.254163.205. Help... thnks in advance

Do a 30-30-30 reset on the router and try it again. Make sure you follow every step exactly. Take your time. There is no room for shortcuts or mistakes on this (one mistake or omission and it will not work). Do it right and it should work for you perfectly. one last question. I have a cable modem router in the basement hard wired to a router on my 2nd floor, and my second floor router is talking wifi to a dd-wrt wifi router on my third floor. I would like to have one wifi name on all three routers. if I install dd-wrt on router on second floor can they all pull from one another? meaning 3rd floor router connect to 2nd floor and 2nd floor connect to 1st? whew!

+kennethpappas The problem with using the same wifi name on all of them is that there is no way to ensure which router your devices are going to connect to. They connect to the one that responds first, not the strongest signal. You could have one wifi device on the third floor connecting the router on the first floor because it responded first even though it's a weak and slow signal. Better to change the WIFI names to represent which router it is to make sure you connect to the correct router for the best speed. Thanks

I noticed you're using version 23919 DD-WRT firmware on your Netgearwnr2000v3 router. I have version 18777 and have tried to upgrade to 23919 but keep getting the message "Upgrade Failed". Any ideas?

Actually, I did eventually get the repeater to work with Xfinity's WiFi hotspots. Briefly detailing the procedure, DHCP must be used, not a static IP address. The user must login to the Xfinity's WiFi hotspot portal using their email address and password. Xfinity records the MAC address of the DD-WRT repeater.

+kennethpappas If your primary router is currently working correctly you should not have to do any configuration to it at all. All it needs to have working on it is the DHCP service which most routers have running by default. Thanks.

Yes, in my case both routers do have DD-WRT but you only need it on the repeater router. The main router can use the stock firmware it came with as it is only acting as a WIFI AP. Thanks.

Richard Lloyd Yes but only when connected through ethernet cable ( the second computer connected to the secondary router had no wifi card). My primary router is an integrated modem/router unit while the secondary router is the TP Link WDR4300.

If you are looking for a repeater bridge WIFI extender the TP-Link WR841N is what I use and it is a super value at $19.99 on Amazon amzn.to/19rM7nx It is also stable and fast. I use to stream to two Roku's laptops, android devices etc. and it works great and it connects perfectly with the WDR4300 V1 which is my main router. Hi, I've set up my secondary router and everithing works fine. The only thing is that in all clients connected to the secondary router can't send uPnP call to the primary router. For example I connected an Xbox360 to the secondary one ad the nat is stricted (primary router can't forward port to play Xbox Live). Is there a setting to fix it?

Thanks for the video! I am at the 23:16 minute and now I cannot connect to my secondary Router. I tried to setup the wireless access and it dropped me off the Router page (setup). Now I can't get in to my secondary router but still access the internet throug the lan wire connectes to the router and my computer. Please help...

Unfortunately the memory on the WNR2000V3 is limited to 3.6 MB instead of the usual 4 MB. This limitation means that certain things on the firmware had to be sacrificed in other to have the essential code fit. Thanks

what if i have a cable modem router in basement going to a router in my office and i want a wifi extension router in ramily room. can i put them ALL on the same wifi name and how would they be set up? right now i have router in office speaking to my wifi extension router in family room and the unit in family room is running ddwrt. thanks!

+kennethpappas I would not suggest using the same WIFI name as the clients have no ability to discern between the router signals. They would connect to what ever signal they see first not the strongest or fastest signal. Thanks.

This may have been commented on already but I didn't have time to read through all the comments. I have a Netgear WNDR3700 v1 so maybe it is different for other hardware. I was able to connect to the internet but after a minute or so I would lose my internet connection though I could hit other routers on my network. This happened on multiple machines, and all hardwired. I found online ( www.dd-wrt.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=275656&sid=6bf02396c9335ab101f492a184c83e19 ) that "Default GW Mode" under Wireless >Basic Setting needs to be set to "Manual" and the IP address of the main router entered in under Gateway. Once I switched to that everything worked perfect.

For who this tutorial doesn't work; losing connection to the bridge router midway the tutorial, there is a simple solution. Do not apply any settings until you've changed everything, so only save them. When you've changed everything, it again save, then apply settings. Then it will work!

My router now extender will get internet connection for up to 30 seconds then drops. I can make it come back by disabling and re-enabling the LAN connection, but then it drops

@@richardlloydusa No. I am dong just what you did in the video. I have my Netgear R6400vs connected to my PC from a LAN port. I actually had it working via client bridge. However, I can not set up virtual settings to also make it broadcast. They are not an option. I can using Repeater Bridge. Once I tried that I began having problems. Even when I reverted back to client bridge, it connects and drops every few seconds. Now I am getting a DHCP error on my pc

@@richardlloydusa Still using DD-WRT. I found the problem. When the old router/new bridge is on and set to auto DHCP, it is given the same IP as the other outer and I get no internet on my network.

Your Wireless Physical Interface ath0 on the router you are using as a bridge should be set to Client Bridge (Routed) on your wireless mode. I would go through the video set up from the beginning and follow it carefully step by step to the end. It should work for you.

eforward A router in "Client Mode" connects to another wireless Access Point (the host router). It uses its wireless connection as the WAN interface, and shares the internet connection only to the LAN ports. It is not seen as an access point by laptops or other computers scanning for AP's and does not accept wireless connections from client devices. The AP is not required to be running DD-WRT firmware. The main router and secondary router (DD-WRT client mode) are on separate subnets. NAT is used between the routers. Thus, when port forwarding is needed it must be configured at both routers - not just on the main (host) router.The router in Client Mode must use its own DHCP server to give out IP numbers, Gateway and DNS server to the devices connected to its LAN ports. The configuration described in this video is on the same subnet as the host router and uses the hosts DHCP server not it's own. It also shares it WIFI connection as well as it's LAN ports to clients which a Client Bridge does not do. Picking "Client Bridge" on this router alone and leaving it that way would make it a client bridge but my configuration goes beyond that and turns it into a "Repeater Bridge" as described by DD-WRT. Repeater Bridge from DD-WRT A wireless bridge connects two LAN segments with a wireless link. The two segments are in the same subnet and look like two ethernet switches connected by a cable to all computers on the subnet. Since the computers are on the same subnet, broadcasts reach all machines. DHCP clients in one segment can get their addresses from a DHCP server in the other segment. If you follow the directions in this video you will end up with a "Repeater Bridge". Picking "Client Bridge" in the WIFI configuration is only part of the whole configuration I describe in this video. When you are finished this configuration your LAN will function like the picture I show on the video at 0:07 on this video. Which is the exact same picture and function shown on the DD-WRT Wiki www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Repeater_Bridge if you scroll down the page you will see it. I have configured my WRN2000v3 exactly as shown in the video and it functions exactly as described on the DD-WRT wiki page for the repeater and the picture that I show a the 0:07 mark. So thanks for asking the question now I know the difference between a "Client Bridge" and "Repeater Bridge". I also know that the title on this video is correct.

I'm getting tired of this. i have a Netgear WNDR3700v1 that i put DD-WRT onto so i can get my computer set up to use the internet since I don't have a wireless card in there anymore. Everyone on RU-vid and other sites make it look and sound so easy, but when it only give you 30 seconds of connectivity, that's not easy, especially since I have now been working on this for a total of 8 hours trying to get a stable connection. I'm following everything you guys say and I'm still getting nothing.

+Richard Lloyd actually when it came to that bridge, I eventually did get help from someone, one of my friends went to school for networking and he helped me, I aparently put some info in wrong and touched some places that weren't necessary for me to touch, even though, some walkthroughs said I had too. I don't remember what since it's been so long. The router had other issues after that, but it was only a temporary solution anyway. I now have a whole new wireless card in my computer so it isn't an issue anymore.
