Excellent Video I new I could be done. Just needs a lesson on the practical side. Much appreciated from old school technician. My last theory training was in the 1970s. So rely on these types of videos to keep up. (Real easy way to learn)

Thank you for this video. This is exactly what I was looking for, and your explanation/walkthrough was comprehensive and easy to follow. Some options on my TP-link admin page were a bit different or located in different places, but I was able to navigate through well enough to get everything working as intended in the end. It’s a bit of a disappointment that this method isn’t covered in the pack-in manual (only the hard wired AP mode is depicted). Luckily you put this video together for those of us that wanted to go this route. This is coming from someone that tried a powerline adapter first (got speeds slower than wifi since my router and adapter were on different circuits) and a wifi extender (speeds slower than wifi from my original router), and was almost on the verge of just running a 100ft patch cable from the router to my 2nd floor (this method wasn’t wide approved, so it was a no-go from the start).

Thank you SO MUCH, I've spent the last half a day trying to do this, following different tutorials, but they always left some key information out (what ip address to give to your router, etc.) and they never explained things, resulting in me just not knowing what i'm doing and messing something up (forgetting to allow wps/allowing it on the wrong router, or giving a wrong ip address manually) I loved that you also explained a little and included sanity checks, such as checking the status of the router through the adapter settings. Keep up the great work! (I also had to do factory reset with your video on this old router before since it was bricked and the new system apparently didn't gave ap functionality... My student dorm mates will be impressed, all have failed before, but now we have wifi in the kitchen!:)) I subscribed!

@Richard, this is exactly what I've done in my home! Am using the Secondary Router as a Repeater, to cover the dead zones in remote corners of my house. If you'd mentioned in the diagram shown at the beginning of your vid that the DHCP must be disabled on the Secondary Router, it would save a lot of bother to many viewers who want to try this out for themselves.
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 2 года назад
At the 29:49 point in the video, after showing everything else that is required for this to work, I show and state that DHCP MUST be disabled on the secondary router. I did this intentionally at this point as I did not want the person doing the configuration to lose his DHCP lease prior to the configuration being completed and loosing his access to the secondary router. Thank you so much for watching, commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀
@ramnik.khanna
@ramnik.khanna 2 года назад
@@richardlloydusa, valid rationale! It's better for the unfamiliar viewers to disable DHCP later during the configuration. Most forget to do that after entering the gateway to the Primary Router, and then they wonder why it won't connect, or why the Secondary Router fails to obtain an IP address.

I want to use my old router to extend the range of the family SSID throughout the house. Is there a way I can setup the old router to do that, without having to create to new SSID for everyone to connect to?

Got isp modem and router (major player in cable and internet provider…don’t need names here). Want to wireless connect (not necessarily expand wifi coverage) FROM dd-wrt (primary goal: set as private second AND separate network, broadcasting wifi) TO isp router. Risk of being seen as clueless newbie..don’t worry me…just needed to present my issue

Thanks for posting the video; as I'm try to "improve" wi-fi signal strength/reception in the furthest parts of my home. I am confused about the terms: router, access point, repeater, extender, and mesh wi-fi. Technically, isn't the secondary router in your network a repeater or extender since one can't connect to secondary router via ethernet cable? Would you mind elaborating on pros/cons of an access point vs. repeater vs. extender vs. mesh wif-fi? Thanks a bunch
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa Год назад
This video deals with creating an Access Point which you can connect to using a lan cable if you wish. That would be a computer using an Ethernet cable or a similar device. The differences between all the devices you ask about are many but you can do your own research on each one and the differences there in. To be brief they are all devices that connect network clients to networks and or the Internet. I may do a video explaining the differences between them all (It would be a very long video. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Hi Richard I follow this video which is great but unable to make a wireless connection between the routers The primary is a TP link device and the secondary is also Tp link Archer v1. But I notice the Wps option is only in the 5ghz wireless settings, and when I scan it does find the primary router, ( which may not have a 5ghz function). Is this fundamental problem? Thanks

😬 this comment was meant for another you tuber I was watching. That said I do have a question for you in regards to my attempt to get a 2nd router on my network. My issue is my isp modem is connected to the providers Wi-Fi router, which is connected the coaxial cable out to a mocca type device to a 5 port switch that then connects to my TV via an Ethernet cable. I configured the 2nd router as you laid out in your video, and connected it to one of the available ports in that switch upstairs by the TV. It shows up and broadcasts fine on my phone but it causes my tv to constantly drop and pick up wired connection. Like there is some sort of conflict

Great video Richard! I have used this to add a 3rd router to my home My primary router connects to my secondary router using a CAT6 cable. My 3rd router connects to the secondary router using wifi in the way you have shown. My only issue is that my newly connected 3rd router isn’t giving my the same connection speed as my other two routers. It runs at approximately half the speed.. any idea why this may be happening? Peter 👍🏻👍🏻

WIFI is a half-duplex technology meaning it can only send or receive it can't do both at the same time (think of a push to talk radio) Ethernet is a full duplex technology therefore i can send and receive simultaneously. So half the time WIFI is sending and half the time WIFI is receiving were Ethernet is sending and receiving data all the time and that happens on both sides of the connection. That's the difference (very simplified) as there are other factors in WIFI such as interference, fragmentation and collisions which do not happen on Ethernet connections at all. Hard wired is always the better technology (currently) subject to change in the future. Thank you so much for commenting and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

I’ve tried to do this so many times with my archer C9 as the main router and a Netgear R 6200 as the access point or repeater. Still can’t get it right. One issue I have is that my Netgear manual says that if I am using the wireless repeating function, I need to select either WEP or none as a security option in the wireless security screen. The WEP option displays only if you select the wireless mode up to 54 Mbps in the wireless setting screen. Does this mean that I am disabling security and lowering my speeds? Then it says I need to set up both units with the same wireless settings. The wireless security option has to be set to none or WEP. Any help would be appreciated.
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa Год назад
Not having a password and having a WEP password is just about the same thing. WEP has been compromised for a long time now and pretty easily hacked. Check to see if there is a new firmware file from netgear for your router and upgrade it if there is. That will probably give you some new options. Tell me how it goes. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Your secondary router must support WDS in order to connect to the primary. Thank you so much for commenting, watching and the very kind words. I appreciate it greatly. Subscribe, Click The Bell and stay tuned! All the best.👍😀

Yes you can. Check out this video I made on how to do it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-zCwJlC_dZgw.html Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. Subscribe, Click The Bell and stay tuned! All the best.👍😀

What if they set up the main router as as... 254.254? Can't go to the next number. Guess they did that to prevent someone from making an extender.
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa Год назад
I'm not sure what the 254.254 number pertains to? Do you have access to the main router? Does your main router allow more than one client(users)? Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

Which password should I use on the second try (14:10)? The password from the primary or the secondary router? Also, I tried both passwords and both times my website is just showing loading for eternity and nothing is happening. Do I need to have my internet on? I'm so confused, help is appreciated.
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa 10 месяцев назад
At the 14:10 point you are dealing with the secondary router which should have been reset at that point. If it's a TP-Link router the default username and password should be admin and admin. Check your manufacturer website for the default username & password. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. Subscribe, Click The Bell and stay tuned! All the best.👍😀

Hmmm, my repeater works, kinda. When I connect via cable, the second router works. I cant find the wifi when I search via wifi.

Try a reboot first and see if the WIFI shows up. If it does not do a factory reset on the router. Follow my video EXACTLY step by step and try it again. Thank you so much for commenting and watching. I appreciate it greatly. All the best.👍😀

This only works if your old router has a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) option. My old Netgear router does not. So check this first before investing time into this approach.

Hi, if I kept my router default password etc how can someone access it if they aren't on my network to start? Always confuses me this one, thanks
@richardlloydusa
@richardlloydusa Год назад
One of the clients inside your network gets compromised (hacked, infected etc.) Then they are inside your network at that point it's straight into your router, at which point they can do whatever they want. Like open up every port they want, compromise your router with malware and worst of all destroy your router with corrupt firmware. By the way if you have people other than you using your network they also can do these things (intentionally or not).. Most likely though a hacker would not damage your router once they own it. They would rather back door it or one of your clients so they could keep using it. Also IOT devices are susceptible to internet worms and viruses too and they become part bot nets capable of using the default passwords on routers to invite more nasty things. I will be doing more videos on network security as there's a serious need to educate people on this. Thanks 😁👍

Welcome! Thanks for asking as your question gave me an idea for a new video to explain this same question. Router and network security are really not well understood and even a basic understanding would go a long way in protecting your network.

@@j.d.3269 And that’s not a joke, is it? The first time I watched this I was confused. So I watched it again and was only slightly less confused. So I got the routers I wanted to use and started a third time, being even more attentive. That was a couple of years ago. I had my main router with 3 wifi channels, a secondary router downstairs with yet 2 more wifi channels with different names, and my Firestick running off a cable from the second router. Then Asus recently screwed up routers on a worldwide basis and I’m back here bc I forgot how to do part of the process. Stick with it.

Richard; write out your presentation, but let it sit for a little while and then read through it again and make some changes that might make it easier to understand. When you say the router there’s no way to know which one you’re talking about the other thing is, I know that you thought Nacho was fun, but it adds to the confusion of the entire process You could’ve easily named them something very very simple and made the whole process more simple. You’re smart and obviously you’ve done these kinds of things before, but most of us haven’t ever even approached connecting to routers together and knowing what a DNS is and a WTS and all those abbreviations do. At one point in the video you said that “this was the hard way to do it” and now I’m gonna show you the “easy way“ to do it. That would’ve been much better in Reverse. Show us the easy way first and the hard way second most of us are probably going to use the easy way if it’s available. I have probably listened to this video three times and I still have no idea what to do and I’m reasonably computer savvy. I feel for those who aren’t.

You start and stop video at every instruction. I’m old school technician that is the way I do it. Everyone that is learning has to do it that way. Also replay the video several times over 3 days you will catch on. This is not easy subject. After a year not touching a router I have to check out these how 2 video. Plus this time connecting wireless router to router is actually not done often as I would call it quite technical compared to just bridge with LAN cable.
