Historically I’ve been a Cummins fan, spent most of my career driving Cummins. In the past couple of years I found myself driving a DD15. Just recently I returned to a Cummins. In my opinion the ISX idles rougher an uses more fuel and produces more noise. Conversely the DD15 is smoother, quieter and uses less fuel. As far as pulling a hill I feel like they are both about even. If I were to choose I would now choose the Detroit. It is easier to live with and more economical. As a driver you spend a lot of time sitting right behind a huge motor, you might as well make it as comfortable as possible. As an added bit of information I’ve also driven Cats before they stopped putting their engines into trucks. They were great for low end grunt but I never really cared for them as a highway engine. DD15 has gobs of low end grunt but does really well as A highway engine. The ISX and Cummins in general is a good highway engine. The Detroit is the best of both, in my opinion.

Nah my Cummins noticeably stronger than dd15. Cummins sounds old school and I like it, DD15 sounds gay and european. I’ll take a newer freightliner over a Cummins any day but the engine ain’t better.

I just purchased a 2014 Cascadia with a DD15/13 speed. Got it from the original owner. He spec the truck for himself. $812k miles. Always serviced at freightliner. He’s retiring after 40 yrs on the road. At 70 years old. I bought this truck for a great price and it’s condition. But the main reason was that it’s a one owner truck. Owner operator spec and purchase. It has a couple of minor oil leaks and needs a few little things. But I’m happy with the buy. I looked at a 386 Pete with a rebuilt cat C15. It was good too but I was also looking at repair costs and parts availability out on the road. Pete and cat parts are expensive and hard to find sometimes.

@@willmalloy4940 there is a high/low power setting in the ecm. If this is set to high then it is fine as it’s still running original parameters from Detroit. Be careful with deleted DD15/16. The delete place increases the fueling to “add power” as an up sell. I’ve seen big issues with fuel diluted lubrication causing liner failures on deleted engines.

Hey. I'm from New Zealand. I have a 2017 freightliner argosy with a DD15 565hp 1850ft lbs. 535000kms. The DD15 motors aren't a favorite here in NZ. They may have similar power to a isx but get to pulling up a long big hill and the isx just powers away. But the DD15 does have a better jake brake.

Could it be the transmission gearing and program? I just recently cam out of a '19 Freightliner Cascadia with the DD15 to a '22 KW T680 with the IMX. The Cascadia holds 12th gear for dear life for fuel efficiency, but sacrifice pulling power in the mountains. I can downshift early to stay in the powerband, but it won't do it automatically. At least the Freightliner Cascadia gets excellent MPGs. As for the KW T680, it does the opposite.
@denovusa4382

It all depends on a gear ratio and transmission as well. On my DD15 455 HP, I got eaton fuller 13 speed smart shift and 3.36 ratio. I'm ripping off most of the trucks on a hills even when fully loaded 80000 lbs. But also, I can go 75 mph at 1500 rpm.

Great video and a place to call if anyone had a question before purchasing their unit. But for me today’s ISX are disposable engine that will visit any repair shop ten times more then if you run a DD15. Maintenance is key and for maintenance you will need to go to repair shops but Detroit engines fails a whole lot less then today’s isx engines. Now before cummins was my number one go to engine but not after 2012 models came out.

Still saying the same and won’t regen. I’m leaning towards the ECM that controls it. There seems to be a lot of codes for the same issue. Pins and plugs look very good at the ECM. Do you think it could be the problem ? One code says the engine exhaust temp is -40 also. And I replaced it too. Nothing changed. Any thoughts would greatly be appreciated.

If he's comparing the x15 to the dd15 I don't even think it's close..but if it's the the isx 08 tru 2016 then he's spot on..I personally think from all the research I've done on the x15 it's miles ahead

I had isx 2250 with Volvo 13 sp best truck ever owned cause 485, 1850. I have decided runs Nor Cal to so cal if u been to Cali u no Grape vine it's steep hills. Avg 40-45mph with close to 79-80k if u gonna buy Cummins make sure replace camshaft after 500k Sohc u get best torque but less hp from Dd15 dohc more HP but Less Torque Trust me I've driven both Freightliner and volvo. By far Cummins been best choice for me

We run Heavy Haul in Michigan. Our company was all Cat prior to Acert. After all that we switched to Cummins. We had good luck until the 2009 isx. Our company then switched to Detroit. Freightliners and Western Stars. My boss hated Cummins that bad until last year. We have 12 Dd16 that are garbage. Shitty mpg and lack of power. Needless to say we Got the New x15 565 and will stay that way. The Detroit’s were good until they hit 200k once they hit that mark they lived at the Dealer
@veritalba

I’ve had both engines. The DD15 is really smooth and quiet with great pickup. Any grade over 3-4% and a similar spec’d ISX will out pull the Detroit. The best motor I had was a 530hp ISX in a 2005 T2000, it would pull just about anything on a grade except a big Cat. I changed oil every 20k on all of them, and also added 1 gallon of 80-90 hypoid gear oil in the motor. In the mountains Cummins, on the plains Detroit.

There's the problem with the dd15 you have to buy a Freightliner to get it and Freightliner is a garbage the Cummins x15 comes in Pete and Kenworth those trucks are better than a Freightliner so I guess I'll go with the Cummins
@tres311
@tres311 Год назад
Actually Pete’s and kenworths are shit. Old school drivers like them because they think they’re better, but in reality our T680s are the most unreliable of the 3 brands we use the other is Freightliner and LT international w/ Cummins. I definitely like the international engine the best, it’s noticeably stronger and and sounds better, but the cascadias are like airbuses interiors. Way nicer. I’d buy a freightliner strictly for the interiors and prices & availability of parts and service center. Paccar aren’t as nice as you think.

after reading the comments it seems like the experience between these two engines is all over the map. Some have good experiences and some have bad experiences. Many variables may be involved between owners and how often and what type of maintenance is done, how the rigs are being driven (if the driver is beating on it or not) what and where they are hauling, etc.. who knows.

I really appreciate Comparisons. I work for a fleet right now and the oil change intervals are 50,000 miles which I always thought was way too far better to change it sooner than later! I have a question for you is there any additives that you would use in order to clean out the engines to help maintain them? Especially I hear they get clogged because of the DEF system when you are Idling a lot!
@TATEXPRESSINC
@TATEXPRESSINC 4 года назад
Thanks for watching be sure to subscribe. It is not recommended to add any additives in the DEF System. If the system is clogged than the root cause should be found. Yes, high idle time will cause excessive soot build up and I would recommend an oil analyst if they are doing 50k oil change intervals.

TAT Express Inc. Thanks so much I will definitely do that! And yes I did subscribe. What about additives to the fuel or oil do you recommend anything like that?
@Yweile
@Yweile 4 года назад
@@americanjustice2722 I use Edt every day diesel treatment. Can't tell last I recently tbh. Yes high idling cause soot build but overall the diesel we use now is trash lack lubrication. Shit burn like a candle. Wiry the additive burns way more cleaner. I had 3 isx15 nd 1 mx13. Drove a dd13 one time in a Volvo. Gets good mileage. Opinion keep maintenance on point use additive to increase octane. Also use archoil nano additive. Works wonders. Truck sounds like a car.
@atye04
@atye04 2 года назад
Coolest additive ive used in a toyota echo is NMF no more friction' but its designed for semis. It reduces vibration and they put a water jug on the truck and after adding the water stops vibrating substantially... thought it was snake oil but its been used in racing for years and its very interesting stuff. Runs amazing in a car, would put it in company freightliner but.. its pricey. Works tho i swear. Reduces friction and demagnetises steel buildup in oil so it gets flushed through the filter in about 10 mins. Dont ask me how it works, witchcraft or some such as the inventor is some crazy middlestern chemist that invented it.

My friend have 4 trucks with Cummins ISX 15 and they are a real headache . All months trucks need to go shop. Specially for DEF and DPF system . I personally do not recommend Cummins isx they have a lot of fails like : injector tip , 7th injector ( dpf) , oil pan leaking every 200k miles , sensors fail , at 450k miles turbo goes bad . It happen exactly the same things to my friend’s truck . I prefer DD15 , Volvo D13 over Cummins ISX 15 Or go with new Cummins x15 they fix all nightmare with ISX15 .

The ISX is much more mechanic-friendly, the conventional front gear train gives a lot of space to work for air compressors and fuel pumps. The turbo is out in the open and almost all the fuel and coolant hoses are braided banjo vs plastic clip-connects. If you are wrenching on your own truck I would not even consider the DD15.
